Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I love the look that ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Stacked Photos PS Mini 6501 creates, but the white border on the pictures clashed with the rest of the color scheme on this layout. To modify the outlines, I used the Magic Wand to select the white outline and pressed Ctrl+J to copy and paste the selection to a new layer. On the new layer, I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Folds 5001 so the outline would coordinate better with the frame on the small photo.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To add more interest to my page I decided to cut out shapes on the paper layer behind my photo. To do this I first typed "My Dad" on a separate file page using AMC_Happy Font. I then turned that into a brush by going to Edit > Define Brush. With my new brush, I went back to my layout and using my Selection tool I selected a portion of the paper I wanted to cut through. With my paper layer highlighted, I hit the Delete key and then Ctrl+D to remove the marching ants. I now had the words "My Dad" punched through my paper layer. I did the same thing using Ariadna's Dynamic Brush Set: Variae Formae 8201 and punched leaves out throughout the paper. Afterwards I added a slight shadow to the paper layer.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the bamboo, I used Valerie Randall's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Mingei. After opening the paper template, I used the Rectangular Marquee tool to choose just one stalk of bamboo on the paper template. Next, I used the Move Tool to move it on to my layout. I placed a green patterned paper on the layer above the bamboo and hit Cmd+Alt+G (Ctrl+Alt+G) to create a clipping mask. Finally, I changed the Blending Mode of the green paper to "Darken" to allow the detail of the bamboo to show through the paper.

Journaling: You have to travel over steep, narrow, winding roads to get to Maricao, the home of coffee plantations and the site of Puerto Rico's annual coffee festival. If you hazard the trip, you're rewarded with a festival that is unknown to tourists. Musicians, local food, artisans, and coffee are in abundance. The area is decorated with brightly colored flowers hung in baskets. Simple, natural and colorful - just like the people of Puerto Rico!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

With the great textured paper from Shalae's Zoo Collection Mini as my background paper, the journaling didn't want to show up very well against it. To fix that, using my Rectangular Selection Tool, I selected a piece of the background paper. Then, I hit Ctrl+J to bring it to a new layer. Then, I lightened it by going to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations> Lighten. Taking a grunge brush, I gently erased away the edges of the new piece, so that it blended in perfectly with the original background paper. Voila! Now, I can read my journaling!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to emphasize the word "color" in my layout subtly. Ariadna Wiczling's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Freehand Coloring 8201 Super Biggie was perfect for this! I used the style above each of my photos, in different colors, and realized that it'd be a great touch if I used the style on the photos as well. In order to do this, I duplicated my photo. Then I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Freehand Coloring 8201 Super Biggie to the duplicated layer. I kept the Blending Mode as "Normal," but I changed the Opacity to as low as 25% - depending on the photo I was working with. There were times when the crayon strokes fell on the face, which detracted from the photo, so I went to Layer> Layer Style> Scale Effects. At this point, I changed the scale of the style up or down, depending on the photo I was working with. The color that I used depended on the photo. On the blue and purple photos, I used the white color style. On the green photo, I used the green style. And on the last photo, I used the pink style, because I wanted the main color of the photo to show through.

Want to get more use out of patterned papers that you love? Resize and rotate them for a new look! On this layout, I did exactly this. I used the same patterned paper twice - first as the background and then again at a smaller size and rotated a bit. I also layered some of the wonderful fabric looking paper from the Hearth Paper Super Mini between them to give some extra texture and dimension.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I really wanted to use the free flying bird from Thao's Prayer and Praise Collection Mini. When I got it onto my layout, the colors weren't quite what I expected. To fix that, I clipped a bright paper to it to changed the color, by using Ctrl+G. Then to keep the outlining and the detail of the bird, I used the Magic Wand and selected just the outline only - from the original embellishment. Using Ctrl+J, I brought just the outline to a new layer. Then, I added Sarah's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metal Foil 6501 to the outline layer that I had just created. I then layered it above the yellow bird, deleted the original uncolored embellishment, and I now have a customized embellishment perfect for my layout!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I recolored the papers and embellishments from Shalae Tippetts' Renew Collection Biggie and Merciful Collection. First I installed a color swatch in Adobe Photoshop from Valerie Randall's Colour (me) Creative eBook with 36 color swatches. Next, I chose two colors from the swatch to set my foreground and background colors. Then I made a direct selection of the layer to be recolored. Next, I clicked on the adjustment layer icon and selected "Gradient Map." In the box that opened, I checked "Dither" or "Reverse" to find the look I preferred. Then I double-clicked on the gradient bar. In the Gradient Editor, I moved the color stops and the midpoint sliders until I was happy with the distribution of the colors. To add a third color to the gradient, I clicked just below the gradient bar to add a stop. Then I double-clicked the stop and selected a third color from the swatch.

Generations With the Love of Sewing

I think I might have mentioned this before, so it may not be a big surprise to you. I love to sew. I think it feeds the part of my creative spirit that has the desire to make tactile things. I come by it honestly; the sewing bug runs in my family.

I remember the stories told by my mother and grandmother of the fancy dresses that my great grandmother would sew after being inspired by the pages of Vogue. I have Nana’s treadle sewing machine and a wonderful tin of colorful silk thread that she used for her sewing projects. I imagine that the dresses she made were not only beautiful, but colorful as well. She passed along her sewing talents to my grandmother, who made clothes for me when I was a child. She also spent seven years hand-stitching a double wedding ring quilt for me, made from four generations of fabric scraps. My mom would sew costumes and prom dresses for me and lovingly passed along those skills to me. I sew costumes and capes, pajamas, furniture slipcovers, clothing and quilts. Now, I’m passing along the love of sewing to my daughter.

I recently made a dress, bonnet and apron for my daughter to wear for the third grade “Pioneer Day.” I’m so glad that I sew with a modern machine and not the treadle!

When I was looking for some lace trim for the dress, I came across a large bin of unfinished projects. One of the downsides of my sewing habit is that I become distracted by more important things in daily life and set aside the project and it is left unfinished. I found a quilt in that bin and it really bothered me that I didn’t quite get it done. All that remained was to finish sewing on the binding. (I think I might have quit working on it about the time I found Scrap Girls and the joy of creating digital scrapbooking products!) It bothered me that I hadn’t finished this quilt because it was an unfinished project started from another unfinished project. It is a baby quilt for my daughter. She’s going to be nine this summer! I will cut myself a little slack; I didn’t start this project until she was about five.

The quilt is pieced from squares that I found in my paternal grandmother’s things. I had no idea that she could sew as well. It was such a treasure to find that I brought home the quilt squares determined to finish her unfinished project. The quilt squares are appliqués of various animals made from precious pink and blue 1930’s feed sack style fabrics. I had my daughter help me lay out the squares and I found some similar colored fabrics with coordinating vintage style prints at a local quilt store. I cut strips of the fabrics and machine pieced together my own design. I hand-quilted around the embroidered appliqués and hand-stitched on the binding.

I finally finished sewing on the binding one night last month. As soon as I finished it, I put in on Maddy’s bed while she slept. She has cuddled up with it every day since, telling me that it is the perfect size to cozy up in while watching a movie. I guess you’re never too old for a handmade baby quilt. Luckily, there are enough blue squares to make a quilt for my son Max. I’m sure I’ll be able to finish it before he turns nine. I have a few years!

I loved creating this collection. It was for my first Scrap Girls Club in March 2007. I was inspired by vintage fabrics from soft faded quilts and cottage style decorating. It is still one of my favorites. I love the pink and blue and it just reminds me of my daughter’s new vintage quilt.

Mini Tutorial: Plain Frame Makeover

I am totally addicted to transforming ordinary or plain items with digital scrapbooking supplies. Recently, I took a trip to Target and checked out their $1 section at the front of the store. This is an excellent place to find inexpensive items that you can makeover with just one digital scrapbooking kit. Don't have a Target nearby? I've also found great items to makeover at my local dollar store, yard sales - even my own garage.

Items needed for this project:

  • Wood frame (w/ 4x4 in. opening)
  • Papers from Beaute Botanique Collection Biggie
  • Word art from Beaute Botanique Collection Biggie
  • Mod Podge Sealer
  • Scissors
  • Sponge Brush
  • Pen

Digital scrapbook tutorial: Supplies.

In Photoshop, reduce the size of your paper and print it on a sheet of 8.5x11" paper. Chose another paper and reduce it to 4x4" and drag the word art of your choice on top of this paper. Reduced the word art so that it fits on the 4x4" square. Print out.

Digital scrapbook tutorial: Paper and word art.

Using the first piece of printed paper, trace the frame on the back sided of the printed paper. Cut out the paper for the frame (Note: I did NOT cut on my lines, but rather about half an inch larger than my marks, this excess will cover the edges of the frame).

Digital scrapbook tutorial: Prepare frame.

With the sponge brush, apply an even layer of Mod Podge to the front of the frame. Apply the frame paper on top of the Mod Podge. Cut diagonal slits near the inner and outer corners so that you can wrap the paper onto the frame neatly. Smooth out wrinkles and air bubbles. Cut out the word art square.

Digital scrapbook tutorial: Cut out word art.

Insert the word art into the frame.

Digital scrapbook tutorial: Insert word art into frame.

That's it! See how easy that was? With just one digital scrapbooking collection, an inexpensive frame, plus a few other minor items, you were able to create a beautiful frame for your home or for gift giving.
