Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I fell in love with Brandy's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Crocheted Frames. The frame that I used on this layout came in a PSD format with a pearl layer and a base layer. To color the pearls, I used the Eyedropper to select an off-white color from my background paper. Once I had my color selected, I colored my pearls by adjusting the Hue/Saturation/Lightness of the pearl layer after clicking the "Colorize" box to apply the color I had previously selected. I then repeated this same process with the base crochet layer, but chose a pinkish-purplish color from my background paper instead.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Using chains to hang the "N" from Brandy's Mossy Collection Biggie alpha was the perfect touch on this layout. First, I brought the letter "N" into my layout. Then, I brought in a chain from Brandy Hackman's Abstract Expressionism Collection Biggie. I duplicated it and moved it around until it looked the way I wanted it to look. I then added a few screws from Melissa Renfro's Well Loved Hardware Embellishment Mini. I added drop shadows, and decided it needed just a little bit more. I added an squiggle from Dinny Miller's Sage Collection, then applied Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001 to the squiggle. I added a tag and erased a small portion of the metallic squiggle, so the tag would look like it is hanging from the metal.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The original photo I chose was brightly colored and had a very dark background. I wanted all the attention to be on my daughter's face, so I came in really close and offset the photo in the frame a bit to focus on the way her head was tilted toward the camera. To get the effect on the photo, I created three duplicate layers of the photo. The base I left original. The next I used Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801 and changed the Blending Mode to "Screen" and slightly lowered the Opacity. The top layer I applied one of the styles from Syndee Nuckles' ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Photos 6301. Finally I lowered the Opacity of that layer to give the look of a tinted photo.

I wanted to add more gumballs to Brandy Murry's gumball cluster from her Sugar Baby Collection. So with the gumball cluster layer active, I used the circular Marquee tool to make a selection around a gumball I wanted and hit Ctrl+J. This puts the selected gumball into its own layer, allowing me to position and resize it as desired.

To create the frame underneath my layers of stitching, I chose a green paper from Brandy Murry's Mossy Collection Biggie and, using my Marquee Tool I removed the outside edge and an inside square. I wanted to bring more texture into the layout without taking away from the frame and trio of photos. To do this, I selected the blue diamond paper from Brandy's Yesteryear Collection Biggie. Using the Magic Wand, I clicked on the portion of the design that I wanted to bring into my layout. With the marching ants active, I hit Ctrl+J to bring just that portion of the paper onto a new layer. Then I played with the Blending Modes and adjusted the color until I achieved the look I wanted. Finally I deleted the original paper layer.

A Designer's Life: Brandie Valenzuela

Weight Loss Lessons

I've battled my weight for many years. In 2007, I found the motivation to learn a new healthier lifestyle and I lost about 30 pounds. Yeah, it's good and I'm not trying to downplay the value of losing 30 pounds but, for me, this was just barely the tip of the iceberg and I still had a lot of weight to lose. It wasn't until this year that I really started getting serious.

On January 2, 2009, I joined Weight Watchers for the first time in my life and made a commitment to become a healthier woman. I started journaling all my food. If I ate it, I tracked it. I also started getting active. I actually look forward to the brisk one mile walk my husband and I take several times a week. Is that me who just said that? It's crazy to think that I would look forward to it. But, I really do.

Since the past five months have been a huge learning experience for me, I thought I would share a few of the random things I have learned - the good and the bad, the obvious and the not so obvious.

  1. It's easier to lose weight if a friend joins you. My husband started Weight Watchers two weeks into my joining. Going through the ups and downs of this journey with him makes it so much better, not to mention, it's easier that we're both on the same page when it comes to the food we're buying and eating.

  2. I had heard that eating healthier was more expensive, but I'm finding that it isn't necessarily because now we are actually buying less food. So, yes, we are paying more for our whole grain bread, but it's lasting twice as long since our portions aren't double (or triple) what an average person would eat.

  3. When underwear is too big, they are really a pain and are likely to shift in odd ways at inconvenient moments.

  4. Making my usual cheese sauce recipe with lowfat cheese doesn't work too well and it will result in a large mass of yellow goo stuck to my whisk. I still need to investigate other options there.

  5. On a sunny day, the local park is full of people doing outdoor activities. Some are playing ball, some play on a playground, others are walking. There are also Frisbee throwers, roller-bladers and bike riders. I know it sounds silly, but after visiting our park more often now, I actually feel like I've joined a new club. Seriously.

  6. Losing weight can be time consuming. It's been a challenge to balance all the watching calories (calculating "points") and tracking of my food. Not to mention, if I cook a meal from scratch, which I do most nights, I have to figure out the calories/points on the portion I eat. It takes some getting use to. But, I can say that it is easier today than it was that first month or so.

  7. While some of this losing weight business is time consuming, shaving my legs is starting to take less time.

  8. Don't use the word "only" when you talk about your accomplishments such as, "I only lost one pound" or "I only walked one time this week." The people that are trying to support and encourage you don't like it.
  9. I love asparagus. (I had it for the first time ever.)

  10. Eating with chopsticks does slow down how fast you eat your food - until you get really good at using them.

It's now the end of May and I have lost just over 50 pounds. (Not including the 30 I lost in 2007.) It's exciting to see my hard work pay off each Friday morning at my weekly weigh-in. I still have a long way to go (I have over 100 pounds more to lose until I reach my goal weight) but I'm up to the challenge and excited to see what other things I learn on this journey.

Favorite product I've designed:
Brush Set: Grungelle

Brush Set: Grungelle
Commercial license versions of Brush Set: Grungelle are also available.

I love quick and easy ways to add texture or make something look distressed. I like how versatile this set is, plus how it blends in easily. I love the name of this product! The joke behind the name is that one day my daughter, Noelle, was being rather grumpy and I told her that if she didn't knock it off I was going to name my new brush set after her. She dared me and I did it.

  • Do you keep a record of your child's height? Did your parents keep record of yours? Recreate that growth chart fun with petal lined template from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crafty Plaster. Use a record of photos as a timeline along the petals to create a record of growth.

  • Summer photos will look great when you create a circular photo mask that blends into the background by single clicking with the Dynamic Brush Set: Textured 8201 on your page in the same place several times. Apply a clipping mask to the photo and add a Blending Mode.

  • Add a unique fabric texture to any embellishment, title, word art or brush by lightly brushing a cream color with the fabric brush from the Dynamic Brush Set: Textured 8201 and then create the effect by changing the Blending Mode to "Hard Light" and lower the Opacity to about 40%.

  • Design a complimentary word art to go with a template from ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Lifted Stencils by selecting the invisible parts of the word and fill the selection in with a new color.

  • Create your own canvas pictures by applying the either the grunge scratches or canvas brushes from the Dynamic Brush Set: Textured 8201 gently on top of your pictures.

  • Brush Set: Reversed Paint can be used to erase edges of photos or papers and give a collaged type feel to your photos.
