"Creative Soul" by Amy Flanagan

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I used Keri's beautiful alpha from the Afterglow Collection Biggie for my daughter's name in the layout, but the alpha turned out to be a little bit bright for this layout. So I decided to re-color and re-texture the alpha to match the word art "Creative" from the Playful Collection. To do this, I first color sampled the green color from the word art. Then I went to back to the name layer and hit Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation. I clicked on the "Colorize" box in the lower right hand corner. Then I adjusted the sliders for saturation and lightness. Voila! My name layer takes on the color that I sampled for the foreground box. Next I sampled the cream color from the word "creative," and added brush work right on top of the Belle Belle layer to grunge it up. Then if I went over the edges of the name with the brush, I fixed that by first highlighting the name layer, then Ctrl+Click on the thumbnail. This gives the marching ants around just the name. I hit Shift+Ctrl+I, which inverts my selection to everything on the layer "except" the name. Then I simply hit Delete and all the brush work that extended over the edges of the name is magically gone!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Use brushes in a new or interesting way.

"The Baby Pool" by Armi Custodio

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make a perfect straight row of dots using Ariadna's Dynamic Brush Set: Dashed 8201, hold down the Shift key, click on the starting point and then click on the end point.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Memorable Family Moment
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: It was only February, but the weather turned suddenly warm. Dad took out the baby pool that had been in hibernation these past few months. You've had that pool since you were babies and this year, it suddenly looked small. It didn't seem to bother you at all though. You still enjoy splashing in it and playing with your water toys. If next year, you will have outgrown the baby pool, I hope you will never outgrow your love for the water.

"No Place Like Home" by Karen Chandler

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the photos to look desaturated, so I chose ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Hand-Tinted 6301. I ran the action to the stopping point, then lowered the Opacity of the top layer instead of brushing some of the color back in selected areas. I hit "Play" again to allow the action to finish running. Some of the photos were too dark, so I duplicated the photo and changed the Blending Mode to "Screen." Next, to achieve the brightness level I wanted, I reduced the Opacity of the "Screen" layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS4
Name of challenge: Use five photos.

"A Boy and His Bike" by Janine Buckles

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Because my pictures were taken in a bush under less than ideal lighting conditions, they were a bit dull. In order to make them "pop," I applied Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801. To do this, I selected the first photo's thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, chose the action from the Artwork and Effects Palette and clicked "Apply". Then I repeated the steps with the next photo. It made the difference between my photos getting lost on the page and being what they should be... the main attraction!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

"Baseball" by Julie Moberly
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I used the "Pin Light" Blending Mode on the color photo inside the baseball. However, it caused the color of the stitching to change to a bright yellow-orange, so I used Brandie's Brush Set: Well Worn to erase the parts of the photo over the stitching to bring back the red.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Free Scrap

"Journey" by Kelly Favor-Chronister
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the painted look of the photo, first I ran Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801 on the photo, because I thought the original was a little dark. Then I ran Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Sketch It PS 8501 on the altered photo. Then I held down the Shift key while dragging with my mouse to place each photo on a separate layer on my layout. Holding down the Shift key ensures that the photos line up on my layout. Then I clipped both photos to a layer mask with the "sketch" photo on top. This, along with the mask, gave my photo a neat painted canvas look.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Use a photo in a creative way.

"Evidence of Love" by Kim Meeder

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I was able to transform the black and white floral background paper from Durin's Faded Hearts Collection Mini to the perfect color for my layout. First, I placed the floral paper above a pink paper from the same collection. Having done that, I simply changed the Blending Mode on the black and white paper to "Lighter Color." The floral border was instantly changed to a beautiful pink. Yay, digital scrapbooking!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use five photos.
Journaling: You always treat me so special on Mother's Day and this year was no different. Rather than go out to eat, you came over to the house to cook me a special brunch. I felt as if I was eating in a gourmet restaurant. Fruit spritzer with fresh berries, fruit salad topped with homemade whipped cream, scrumptious stuffed french toast, and the most amazing frittata with fresh herbs and goat cheese. All of it absolutely yummy! And, as if that wasn't enough, you gave me a beautiful, black hermatite necklace. Thank you for making me feel so loved, sweetheart. xoxo

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates are a great way to get a beautiful layout done quickly. Particularly with dinny's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Clean 1, there is plenty of room for as many embellishments as you want. Another alternative is to use brush sets to add just a bit of accent for a simpler project. Using a variety of layer styles gave the brushes depth and texture. Finally, by using Syndee's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Hand Tinted 6301, I was able to tie the photo with the papers I had chosen from dinny's Cozy Collection Biggie.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS4

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the character version of my daughters, I first extracted them from the original photo using the Polygonal Lasso Tool with the "Feather" set to 1 px. I then applied Cherise's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Comical 8301 Mini to them and copied and pasted them to the layout.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

A Designer's Life: Jacelen Deinema
|
Watercolor Artist
I worked for a craft book publisher for 12 years and did watercolor painting and drawing at night and on the weekends in my spare time. Once I found Scrap Girls and found out that I could combine my painting with digital scrapbooking, I was thrilled.
I live outside Portland, Oregon and have a studio in my house that is my garage converted with good lighting, windows and carpet. It is a little chilly in the winter, but wonderful all summer. I can spread out a project, make a mess and then just shut the door when I am done.
This spring it was wonderful to get out and take pictures of all the new spring blooms in my yard. For people in other areas of the country, rhododendrons might not be as recognizable, but in the Northwest they grow abundantly. Along with the daffodils and daisies, I had to include them in my spring collection. The way that I work is to draw all of my images, transfer them to watercolor paper, paint them and then scan the artwork into my computer.

From there, Photoshop becomes my design tool. I love being able to combine working with the paint and paper, but then having the flexibility of the computer. It takes a little while, but I feel the richness of the paint and texture of the paper comes through to the digital image.

- Jacelen

Favorite product I've designed:
Watercolor Spring Collection

I think that whatever is my most recent work is my favorite. But, I do feel like I have developed and grown as an artist and as a digital scrapbooker since doing this collection. It was such a welcome explosion of color and spring that it has to be my favorite.

May's Scrap Girls Club's featured designer is Amanda Sok. Her club is full of beautiful products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

Club Concepts Mini Tutorial: Creating a Folding Tag Album
Mini albums are always fun to make! This month's Scrap Girls Club Collection includes the perfect frames that can be used to create an adorable mini album. I chose to use the double frame tag in Amanda's Take Wing Frames Embellishment Mini as the basis of my album, but you could use any of the other frames to create your own. Let's get started.
The folding mini album will have two sides. To begin the first side, open a new document (11" wide x 8.5" tall, 300 dpi) in your photo editing software program. (If you have a wide format printer, you could make a larger size.) Drag the double frame embellishment onto the first layer. Resize the tag to 2.5" x 4 3/8" or the size you prefer. Keep in mind the printing area available. (Money saving tip: Decrease the height of the tag to allow you to print both sides of the album on one sheet of paper.) Duplicate the frame layer three times and move the frames so they are horizontally aligned and adjoining one another.
You could create a journaling block by placing paper behind one of the frames. Instead, I chose to use one tag for my journaling. To do this, I used the Magnetic Lasso Tool to select the outline of the tag frame only, filled the selection with black, and clipped a patterned paper to the tag.

Next, have fun using the Take Wing Collection Biggie to create the mini layouts on your tags.
Then, use the same process to create the back side of your mini album. I printed the mini album using double-sided matte paper; however, I decided a wanted a sharper image and ended up using a premium photo paper (Studio Gloss).

Cut out each side of your album and accordion fold each side separately. Be sure to cover the printed layout with a protective piece of plain paper when creasing to protect it. Adhere the two sides together using aerosol artist's adhesive. Use a bone folder to re-score and define the glued folds. Spray the entire mini album with an aerosol digital photo and paper protectant and allow to dry. Finally, decorate your new mini album with ribbons and/or other embellishments and enjoy!
