Life Muses by Ro: Examples from the Past
|
Note: As this is the last article I will write before Mother’s Day 2009, I thought it might be nice to honor my grandmothers this year. They passed away decades ago, but their influences on my life live on.

My grandmothers didn’t worry if their lives were fulfilling their deepest hopes and desires. They simply got up, worked hard, loved deeply and shared what they had with the people around them.
They were creative women who found joy in using everything to its fullest potential. A Christmas card became a gift tag. Old blue jeans became a camping quilt. Bacon drippings became white gravy on toast.
They sewed clothing, bottled fruit and gardened. They made homemade pies, cookies and bread. They embroidered pretty designs on dishcloths and read stories to children. They sang as they worked. They visited with friends, family and neighbors. They took cookies as gestures of friendships, meals to the sick, and a listening ear to the discouraged.
They told stories of their families, passing on wisdom from the past. They shared precious photos with grandchildren and explained who was in the photo and the story behind it. They saved napkins, programs, newspaper clippings and other mementos as evidence that their lives were interesting. Their hope was that their grandchildren would remember the stories of the people they held dear. Their hope was that their grandchildren would pass on the stories they heard.
My grandmothers lived during the Depression and worried how they would make ends meet. They were careful with what they had and were grateful for all that they received. But, no matter what challenge came their way, they rose up in the morning, shared what they had and loved the people around them deeply.
My grandmothers never stopped and considered if they were living the lives their hearts desired because they desired to enjoy the life they had.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial |
More Creative Stitching
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS X.
Several months ago, I wrote a tutorial for the newsletter on using creative stitching on your layouts. Since that time, I have made an exciting discovery to add to my already growing passion for stitching on my digital scrapbooking layouts... using type paths! You might ask yourself, "Why would I want to use type paths for my stitching?" But, after you see how easy it is to create all sorts of creative stitching using the type paths as a tool, you will be asking yourself, "Why haven’t I been using type paths?"
I will be using a couple of actions in my tutorial, some of which were designed for Photoshop Elements and some for the Photoshop CS versions, but they can be used interchangeably.
First, I will start with ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Stitch and Holes PSE 8304 Paths Mini. Although this action was designed for PSE, it works equally as well in Photoshop. You can also use ScrapSimple Tools Actions: Stitch ‘n Holes 8302, which will only work in Photoshop. Either of these actions allow you to choose the color of your stitching. Choose your foreground color.

Choose any type path or type shape that is sold in the Scrap Girls boutique. There are many to choose from.
I will demonstrate using a type shapes product. I am opening a flower from ScrapSimple Type Shapes: Flowers 8301.

With this file open, run ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Stitch and Holes PSE 8304 Paths Mini. (Press "Play" in Photoshop or click on the action icon in Photoshop Elements.) This is what the file looks like after the action is finished.

Next, you might want to apply a style to your stitching and holes to give them a more realistic appearance. There are several versions available in the boutique that will give your stitching some texture and shadowing and will give the holes some depth. I use ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Stitching and Hole 4101 Mini for both the stitching and holes in this example.

Delete the text layer. (We only needed it for the path that it provided for our stitching.)
Next, you can clip a paper of your choice to the background shape that is provided with this type shape if you would like. I am clipping a paper from Thao Cosgrove’s Having Hope Collection Biggie.

First, you place the paper on a layer above the background shape.

Then, you use the shortcut Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac or sometimes Opt+Cmd+G) to clip your paper to the shape. (This is also called "Group with Previous" in Photoshop Elements.)
You now have a great embellishment, with stitching, that you can apply to your layout! Here is my finished layout, using the flowers with the paper background for the inner two flowers and then the stitching by itself for the outer two flowers.
