The sketch will be posted a few hours before the crop so you can get a head start. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join Michelle (Shelbi) and Julie (Burnsie) to discuss how you have grown as a scrapbooker. What have you learned since LAST National Scrapbook Day? What new tricks and techniques have you tried? A new software maybe? Have you learned how to make a siggie or a desktop? Finally managed to learn how to use a paper template? Or maybe you've learned how to make your own styles? or Brushes? Come and tell us all about it!!!
-

Come join Carla (CRS) and Sherry_Lynn for this Special Edition - National Scrapbook Day Quote Challenge Crop at 4pm ET! Here's how it will work - early Saturday morning, we'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and we will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout! Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!
-

When I look back over 2008, I am reminded of the Queen’s words many years ago when she described her year as, “annus horribilis.” 2008 started with one of those situations that goes from bad to worse in my workplace. It did not end in my favor, so I had to reflect long and hard about my future. Fortunately, I arrived at the conclusion that bad things sometimes happen, but then we simply have to move on. My personal life was not that great either and my prayers to God were filled with pleas for my family life and my work situation to find a more stable ground.
With one son in university and twins in their final year of school, it was a stressful year for us all. Our 17–year–old daughter had arrived at the point where she had had enough of school. The year ahead loomed dark and dismal for her. Needless to say, it was a turbulent year in trying to keep her focused. Her twin brother simply sailed through the year, without a care in the world, rarely spending his time in the pursuit of study. My 19–year–old, second year university student, decided psychology wasn’t really his thing after all. My 16–year–old, on the other hand, enjoyed life all year.
Our cat took ill in September and with it came the realization that we could lose her. I couldn’t believe what was happening. When the vet initially could not find what was wrong, we all thought the worst. She did not eat for 10 days and grew thinner and thinner, sicker and sicker. With an injection of antibiotics, she slowly recovered. It was a long three weeks.
During this time, my husband was removed from his management position. Weeks turned into months and he could not find work. At 50 and with the current economic climate, things looked very grim. His mood swings became impossible and the children and I mostly avoided him. How do you encourage your husband to seek help when he denies that there is anything wrong?
As Christmas came closer, we had little money or enthusiasm. All of our extended family lives interstate and, every so often, we spend Christmas alone. This was to be one of those Christmases. It seemed that the whole world was closing in around us. When will 2008 be over?
Then, the miracle of Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, my husband was employed again. It is not in the kind of job he was hoping for, but beggars cannot be choosers. We were simply grateful that he found something. My workplace has had an amazing latter half of the year and confidence in my abilities has risen dramatically. God answered my prayer.
Our Christmas was actually one of the best ever. It was probably the first time I can remember, in a long time, that the six of us spent time together talking, laughing and playing cards. We finished the day with a walk along the beach, with our two dogs, while watching the sunset.
With two days left in the year, my husband went to the doctor and received the help I knew he needed. He still finds it hard to accept, but he recognizes the strain we have all been under. Thanks to God, I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel! However, my 17–year–old son has been diagnosed with a rare digestive illness. It is not life threatening, but he has been hospitalized on a couple of occasions and, on top of his epilepsy, more medication is not what he wanted at all. He is just 12 days away from turning 18.
2008 had been more than a challenge for us.
This past February, we celebrated 29 years of marriage and, I have to say, this past year has been, by far, the hardest. But, even in the midst of all these difficulties, there have been blessings apart from those mentioned above. Friends have supported us. Four young adults, who are thoughtful and considerate and not given us any real worry at all, have found part–time jobs and helped a great deal around the house. My 17–year–old daughter is knuckling down to her studies, determined to succeed. I am attending sports venues with my children and enjoying their insights. We are spending time with extended family. I am watching movies regularly with my 16–year–old, who still thinks Mom is OK. Results from the twin’s final high school exams were excellent. I am having regular, late night, philosophical discussions with my 17–year–old son and regular conversations with my 19–year–old on all of his sporting loves and his hopes and dreams for travel next year. We received a thoughtful gift from our children at Christmas, who all contributed to a getaway for us in the new year, when all they received were the smallest of gifts, as it was all we could afford.
When I look at this very incomplete list, I have to say that God has been very, very good to me and, yet, I have often thought otherwise. But, I am looking forward to the rest of 2009!
- JoAnn Wells

When I was a paper scrapbooker (a lifetime ago) I had a love/hate relationship with rubberstamps. They always looked impressive when other people used them, but it was one medium that I just couldn’t master. The stamps were so expensive and, at the time, they felt so limiting. They always seemed to be the wrong size for my project or I wanted the reverse image. The ink would smear or I wouldn’t have the right color of paint. My young daughter would also get into them before I cleaned them after using them for a project. They were just too much hassle, so I gave up on them.
All of that changed when I discovered the Brush Tool in Photoshop Elements. Here is a tool that I can use. Really, the only limits are in my imagination. Anything I can imagine doing with stamps is easy with the Brush Tool, plus there is so much more. Brushes can make backgrounds, embellishments, alphas, tags, die cuts, word art, borders... the list goes on and on. They can be any size, color or opacity. You can mask them, erase with them and paint with them. If you haven’t experimented with brushes before or if you haven’t used them for more than stamping, you are in for a real treat!
The class “Mastering Brushes in Photoshop Elements” covers everything imaginable about brushes, from basic stamping and erasing to complicated masking. Creating your own brushes using letters, handwriting and memorabilia is also taught. Brushes are a wonderful way to preserve these items because brushes can be used in so many different ways. I have enjoyed teaching the Mastering Brushes in Photoshop Elements classes because I love seeing how students take the lessons and apply them in new and unique ways, creating stunning works of art.

I love the subtle texture this layout has. The embossed brush work adds subtle depth without overwhelming the photo or the journaling.

The mementos and handwritten journaling included on this layout are wonderful examples of how anything can become a brush. These special items are preserved forever in their digital state.

By altering brushes through changing the Blending Modes and Opacity and by combining them with styles and actions, Debbie created a beautiful and completely custom layout. The textures are aged and interesting and all of the elements coordinate beautifully. Brushes were used on the papers and on the title.

What Customers Are Saying... |
If you haven’t seen the post on the message board yet, Scrap Girls has been notified that we won the “Gold Award” from the Top Ten Review for having the “Best Digital Scrapbooking Elements Service Available!” They start out with a large number of sites, edit them down to the top 50, then 25, then 15, then 10–12 and then the top one of all - us. This site specializes in reviewing technology and entertainment. They get between half a million to a million unique visitors each month.
This is an exciting announcement for us and you can read the actual review here: http://digital-scrapbooking-elements-review.toptenreviews.com/scrapgirls-review.html

What an awesome review! There is no doubt you are number one in my mind and now everyone else will know you are number one too!

That’s AWESOME, Ro! I’m glad that other people are starting to realize what we already know – Scrap Girls is the best there is!

This is great! This site is absolutely the best and it’s exciting to see it get this kind of exposure and recognition! Congratulations Ro and to all of the Scrap Girls team!

This is nothing all of us didn’t already know. Now, we can get excited that Scrap Girls is getting the recognition it deserves! Yippee! Congrats to Ro, V and the whole team. It is you that makes this place home for us.

Congratulations to everyone. This is fabulous news! We all knew it was number one, but to get the recognition from “out there” is just fantastic.

It’s a fabulous review. I bet the membership takes a sudden leap and watch out for queues in the boutique tomorrow!

It’s a great acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of the whole team.

Congratulations to everyone. We always knew Scrap Girls was the best site – now everyone else knows it too!

I just read the reviews too! I’ve got goose bumps and shivers up and down my spine. I’ll bet you are sporting a huge grin on your face, Ro! I already knew that this was the best site, ever since it became my home and family. Kudos to everyone on the team and to our members for making it the best place ever! But, number one praise should go to Jesus for giving Ro the idea in the first place and helping her get it started to be where it is today. Thank You, Lord, for helping us to be where You want us to be!

This is great news! Scrap Girls is the best place on the web and the most amazing company I’ve ever seen. Getting the recognition for it is just so awesome! Way to go!

Way to go team Scrap Girls! Woo hoo! That is fabulous – and very well deserved. It is so cool that Scrap Girls scored four complete blocks in every criterion! I believe it’s the heart and caring in everyone here that elevates this site above the technical excellence we all enjoy.

If this isn’t a sign of good business practices plus, I don’t know what would be! Ro and the team, thank you so much for making this a wonderful site!

If you’d like to share your congratulations on this award also, you can find the post on the message board here.

This month will be doing Mother’s Day cards. See you there!!

NSBR Chat
Monday, May 4th - 9:00PM ET

It’s a great chance to meet new friends, catch up on what everyone is up to, and just relax! If you have a problem, we’ll lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Have some great news to share? We’d love to celebrate with you. So join Carla (CRS) at 9pm ET in the chat room!

Friday, May 8th - 11:00AM ET

Club Concepts: We would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these Club Concepts articles. Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off.
