Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I applied the “Smartglow” of Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics PSE 5001 to my photo. The photo looked a little bland, so I duplicated the photo layer and applied Mandy Steward’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801 top photo layer. Finally, I set the Opacity to 57%. I liked how the photo still looked dreamy with the right balance of color.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes you get a photo that you just love, despite its obvious flaws. The photo I used on this layout had a lot of clutter in the background (which includes a bunch of crazy colors), and my daughter was in the process of ducking out of the frame. Still, her expression was priceless, and I wanted to actually document how difficult it was to get a decent photo of her. When I’m up against a situation like this using an inferior quality photo I have to get more creative with how I use it on the layout. I knew I didn’t want to crop it... I tend to like my photos oriented horizontally... and it would have just seemed obviously cropped and awkwardly up-close.

So my first step was to remove the competing colors from the photo, which I did with Syndee’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Hand-Tinted 6301 (Sepia). Next, I used the Marquee Tool to select areas of my background paper (the squares) and duplicated them, resizing a few for variety. I then scattered them over the cluttered portion of my photo and “tied” it down with a ribbon embellishment, masking the part I didn’t want visible. This way, you get the feeling that there is more photo there (and the visual benefit of the horizontal positioning) without all the background mess. Since Haley was nearly out of the shot, I positioned the photo on the left edge of my layout, and then mimicked this by positioning my title on the right edge.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

After I extracted little Ava from the image, I added an outer glow by highlighting the extracted layer’s image in the Layers Palette and selecting “Outer Glow” from my PSE default Layer Styles. I chose “Simple” and then moved the sliders to the largest setting. The glow was nice but I wanted a larger glow so I simplified the layer by right-clicking on the little star on the extracted image layer and repeated the process. When my layout was completely finished, I saved it,chose the extracted image layer again, and applied the “Soft Glow” effect from the ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics PSE 5001. I love how it softened the entire layout and gave it an ethereal look! If you try this remember to save both layouts. One will be your original layered PSD file and the other will only have two layers your flattened layout and the Smart Glow layer on top of it.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to achieve a sketched photo with desaturation. First I prepared my color photo as a PSD and used ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001, choosing the “Black & White with a Hint of Color” option. Then I ran the ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Sketch It PS 8501 Mini, using the “Color” option. I wanted to slightly darken just the trees in the photo, so I duplicated the photo twice and hid the original layer. On the first duplicate, I applied a Levels Adjustment layer, darkening only the mid-tones. Next, I selected the second duplicate and applied a layer mask. Then I selected a soft brush and brushed the layer mask to reveal the darker trees on the layer below. I wanted a very slight warming effect overall, so I merged the two duplicated photo layers and applied a warming photo filter.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted an artistic, textured look for the large photo on the right. To achieve that, I opened Erica’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Fabric Edges. I placed the template layer under my photo. Then, highlighting the photo layer in the Layers Palette, I played with the Blend Mode of my photo layer until I achieved the look I wanted. The Blend Mode on the photo here is “Hard Light.” It allows the texture from the layer below to show through. Then, I wanted the word art to take on the same character. The word art was too bold to place it directly on top of my photo layer and maintain the look I was trying to get. So, I simply slid it under the photo layer. The word art then took on the same texture and feel as the photo layer above it because of the Blend Mode I chose on the photo layer.

Also, using the paper templates to achieve texture in the photo is a technique I learned in a Scrap Girls Online Class called “Tackling Templates.” Look for it next time it is offered!

A Designer's Life: Sarah Batdorf

Blessings

As the deadline for this Designer’s Life article has loomed, I have found myself in a quandary as to what to write about. To begin with, I am overly critical about my writing and then to have to write about myself, well... it isn’t easy. So, I was pondering what to do and found myself stressing and sweeping my kitchen floor this morning when God gently reminded me about blessings. It always happens when I find myself being somewhat pessimistic, maybe a little discouraged, and even perturbed with situations in my life. It’s at these times that God reminds me to dwell on blessings. Being thankful for God’s blessings has the wonderful effect of uplifting my spirits and turning my dark mood around.

In no particular order, this is what I have been blessed with:

  1. Cleaning house is annoyingly repetitive and yet, once I get started, it’s therapeutic. Having a clean house blesses me with a sense of wellbeing. Often, I am ready to sit down and work on a digital scrapbooking layout or even a product afterwards.
  2. My daughter started kindergarten this year and we decided to send her to a private home school co-op. We were prepared to make a few financial sacrifices if needed, but about a month into the school year we found out that her tuition fee had been paid in full! My mother-in-law had written a check to the school.
  3. I don’t drive. God has given us good friends, who live close and are willing to drive Molly back and forth to school. What a blessing!
  4. My children haven’t had any cavities in the last two years.
  5. I have a husband who makes me laugh. The only time I haven’t appreciated this was when I was in labor. Oddly, humor was not on my list of things that I was looking for in a husband, but God knows me better than I know myself.
  6. God provides for my needs, before I even know what my needs are.
  7. We recently moved and our new apartment is flooded with sunlight all day. At one time, we lived in a dark house. It just didn’t get much natural sunlight. After moving to a much sunnier home, I realized my mood and the quality of life was better because of sunlight. Now, I am blessed with it.
  8. I have a washer and dryer. They are ancient. I can’t get the new, energy-efficient, large-load capacity washer and dryer that I would like, but I am thankful to have ones that work.
  9. Any night that my four-year-old sleeps the whole night in his bed is a blessing.
  10. I am blessed with good health. I have two eyes that see. I do have a bit of a hearing loss, but my ears still hear. I have two legs that walk and two arms that do all the things that arms do. My back went out last week; it is healed now, but did that hurt! I can now empathize with all of you who experience back pain and its limitations. I don’t take my back for granted any more.

- Sarah

After visiting my product inventory, I find myself drawn to the paper textures and the combination of salmon pink, teal, yellow and brown in the Hoo Loves Ya Collection Biggie. This collection is special because it’s a nod to my mom and her admiration of owls.

Join in with the thousands of digital scrapbookers who have chosen to learn advanced skills from Ro. You'll be happy that you did!

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop or Photoshop Elements before, or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.
