One of my favorite techniques for drawing attention to a photo is to matte it. A matte can be very simple or it can be more complex. To matte my photo, I chose to place strips of paper underneath the photo and at varying angles to create interest.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the ‘longest’ photo keychain ever, LOL!, first I created each photo key chain individually. I decided which shape, color and ‘sparkle’ I wanted for each frame. Once each photo was placed in its relative frame I layered them one underneath the other, making sure the keychain part of the frame was mostly under the frame above it to give the illusion of one long chain. I then placed them over the Edgeweave embellishment from Trish Yochum’s Air Mail Collection, duplicating the flow of the wave.

Don’t forget a great thing about digital scrapbooking is that you can recolor elements. I wanted to use the pink coral from the Day at the Beach Collection Mini, but I really liked the shape of the cream coral. So I used the cream coral and using the Hue/Saturation sliders, I changed the color to pink. Now I have exactly what I want to use.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The ribbon along the bottom begins underneath the envelope layer but curls up and over it near the bottom right corner. In order to achieve this look I selected the ribbon layer in the Layers Palette by clicking on its thumbnail image. Then I chose my Marquee Tool, and while holding the right-click button on my mouse, drew a square around the area of the envelope layer I wanted the ribbon to be on top of. When I let go, the marching ants were in place. Next I created a new layer out of the area inside the marching ants by clicking Layer> New> Layer via Copy (Ctrl+J), and then moved my new layer to the top by dragging its thumbnail image to the top of the list in the Layers Palette. Now my ribbon appears to curl up and over the envelope. When doing this technique, be careful to only add a shadow to the bottom layer of your embellishment. Give it a try it’s easy!

A Designer's Life: Kerry Veale

A Snapshot in Time

Recently, my almost 16-year-old daughter was preparing to go to winter formal with a group of friends. There was a flurry of activities: she texted her friends about dresses, shoes, purses, hairstyles and plans for the sleepover afterwards. We shopped for a dress and I altered it. We tested fingernail polish and made plans for me to paint her nails the day of the winter formal.

Sometime during these activities I had a realization: we only have about two years left of her living at our home. I realized I needed to take more pictures! She was going to change into an adult soon and we wanted to have more memories of her time with us.

I decided it would be a great idea to rig up an informal photo studio in our garage and to try to get some nice photos of her when she was all dressed up for winter formal. On the Internet, I researched how to set up an inexpensive home photo studio and then shopped at Home Depot for PVC piping and some metal chains. (Total cost for the Home Depot trip was less than five dollars.)

Because our garage has open rafters, it was easy to hang bicycle hooks from them. I opened up the ends of the casing of a queen-sized white sheet and slid it on the pipe, like a curtain. Using the chain, we hung each end of the PVC pipe from the bicycle hooks that were hanging from the rafters. Even though I had ironed the sheet, there were some wrinkles and ripples in it, so I draped some white tulle in front. We spread another white sheet on the floor in front of the hanging sheet. We hung work lights from the rafters and clipped sheets of tissue paper to diffuse the light and prevent shadows. Raising the garage doors brought natural lighting from the right side of our “studio.”

When she was all ready for winter formal, we spent about 20 minutes taking photos in our garage studio. Even though it took several hours to set up our little photo studio, I think the results were worth it. The lighting still needs a bit of work, but the studio is a work in process! Maybe next time I will use a few white poster boards on the left to reflect some of the natural light, to even out the lighting a bit more. I did try to take lots of shots to increase the possibility of getting a few good ones.

In this layout, I used one of my favorite photos (seated on the chair) and her favorite photo (dancing). By the way, the photos did not look quite this good straight from the camera. In Photoshop CS2, I used the Blur Tool to blur the wrinkles in the sheets and I added a black to white gradient to correct some of the lighting. I also used Brightness/Contrast to brighten the photo.

I think I’ll email this layout to my husband and my parents!

- Kerry

Favorite product I've designed:
Always and Forever Collection

Always and Forever Collection

I like the Always and Forever Collection because its theme is love and we usually feature those we love in our digital scrapbooking layouts. The calligraphic swirls that accent this collection were fun to make and add an extra touch of graceful elegance to layouts. I especially like the heart-shaped rose petals that I crafted from photos of roses from my garden. I added layers of hand-painted textures in Photoshop to give the effect of a gesso-washed painting. There are several coordinating products for the collection, including brushes and stickers, which add flexibility and creative possibilities when used with the collection.

Layout ideas:

  • If you are sending Mother’s Day gifts through the mail, consider taking photos of the gift, including after they are all packaged up. Tell why this person is so special to you and what you bought them (and why). Create a layout with the photos using the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: 4x6 Shipping Label and other club products.

  • Prom photos are lovely to scrapbook with the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pretty Packages. Apply a glitter style to Brush Set: Misty for extra glamour.

  • Use ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Vintage Photos in layouts about playing games such as Scrabble, dominoes, or any card game.

  • Design and print ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: 4x6 Shipping Label as a tag for presents: wrap them in a brown paper bag and make it look like a package that was mailed. Especially cute for kids if you want to make it look as if a much-loved character sent the child something (Thomas the Tank Engine, Cinderella, etc.)

  • The words “overdue”, “rush,” or “priority” in ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: 4x6 Shipping Label are fun to use on a pregnancy themed layout.

Project/Printable ideas:

  • Use the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Threaded along with ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Vintage Photos to spell out a child’s name with photos of them cutting paper/doing crafts.

  • Use the “domestic” brush in ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: 4x6 Shipping Label on a layout or card for someone who is proud to be a domestic diva.

  • Brush Set: Misty is perfect to use as an eraser to soften the edges of a picture for blending.

  • Use ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Vintage Photos to make a printed alphabet set that can be used as a word game or to help kids learn letters and numbers.

  • Use the title “A Few of my Favorite Things” to create a layout.

More Project/Printable ideas:

  • Use ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: 4x6 Shipping Label to create “We’ve Moved” cards to share your new address.

  • Brush Set: Misty is really wonderful to use with photos of foggy mornings, cloudy days, or smoky photos taken while sitting around a campfire.

  • Thread other embellishments onto the string in ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Threaded such as flowers, keys, word tags, and beads.
