“Ely & Launa” by Launa Valente

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love the aged folds of Theresa's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Folds 2, but don't forget about using the pieces in different ways. That's one of the nice things about ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates - you can split them up and use the pieces. Here I used on of the folds and shadows at the top corner of my page. Don't forget to think out of the box!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Favorite Childhood Memory
Other Ingredients:
- Font - Sketchy
- Font - Suzie's Hand
Journaling: Dad spent about 9 months working on the Buffalo Springs Ranch in Akron, Colorado. No matter where we were,we just loved being on a ranch. Ely and I had many adventures, most of them were his idea... here we are with our cats Snoopy and Bobby... we called him the Border Collie Cat since he was black and white like mom's dogs. We were so blessed to be able to grow up living a life that most people just dream about.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted a vintage look for my photo, since it was about 24 years old! So I used Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Tattered Photo PSE 8501 Mini to achieve that look. I used the default settings of this action, ran it on my photo, and then positioned it in the upper left third of my layout and surrounded it with some embellishments.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
An easy way to change a paper or brush is to duplicate its layer and then change the Blend Mode to “Multiply” on the top layer. I did this here with both the background paper and the rose brushes which I wanted to make darker and richer. I love being able to customize the look I get from using supplies I already have on hand.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To color the flower templates, I right-clicked “Enhance” at the top menu in PSE5. Then a drop-down menu appeared. I right-clicked “Adjust Color” and then “Adjust Hue/Saturation.” In the dialogue box, I checked “Colorize” and played with the sliders until the colors were to my liking.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to add extra depth to my floral background, I chose the Crumpled Paper from Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Planes Trains and Automobiles. Once it was open in my program, I dragged it onto my layout making sure it was in a layer above the floral paper. Next, I selected the crumpled paper by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, opened Blend Mode, located at the top of the Layers Palette, and clicked through the list until I found one that gave me the look I wanted.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the scalloped matte for the photo, I used multiple copies of the bookplate from Ro's Love at Home Collection Mini. To make quick work of copying, with the Move Tool selected, I pressed and held the Alt key, then clicked and dragged the bookplate. This copies and pastes the layer in one quick step.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Favorite Childhood Memory
Other Ingredients:

- Font - Pea Jessica

A Designers Life: Amanda McGee |
My List
Recently, one of those viral “you’ve been tagged, so make your list” notes went around online. This particular list had to be random, so I thought of some pretty random items. Most of it was silly; I didn’t take it too seriously. But, I started reading other people’s lists and some of them were serious about goals and aspirations, major accomplishments and things to be admired. I wished I had taken my list a little more seriously!
It got me thinking about other lists of mine. Lists of dreams and wishes, places I’d like to see, or things I’d like to do. Maybe I should put those mental lists to paper. So, I thought about things that I’ve learned along the way in life, some things that I’m still learning how to do. This would be a list that I would want written down, to share with my kids. So, here it is. A list of things that I’ve learned about life along the way, otherwise known as “notes to myself” on things I should remember or at least try to teach to my kids, in no particular order.
-
Believe in your dreams. Believe in yourself and confidence will take you a long way. When it fades, you might stumble. When you do, pick yourself back up again and just believe.
-
Cherish your spouse, hold hands, look into each other’s eyes, and remember why you fell in love. Pester them until they remember why they love you so much.
-
Stuff happens, especially when you’re not paying attention. You can’t Ctrl+Z your mistakes. But, you can kindly ask for forgiveness and perhaps a do-over.
-
Think positive. A positive attitude can bring about positive results.
-
Enjoy your family. Conversations with children are priceless. They tell you things that are honest, heartwarming, and humorous. Those little conversations are cookies for the soul. Take time to relish and cherish them in the moment, for they won’t last. Write them down if it’s really good or funny.
-
Be true to who you are, create from your heart and use your own unique talents. Be special.
-
Appreciate your life experiences. They are what made you who you are.
-
It’s OK to get mad, but you have to get over it. At least, that’s what my husband keeps telling me.
-
A simple hug, kiss, and an “I love you” fixes a lot of hurts.
-
Wear your favorite color. It makes you look good and feel happy about yourself. So what if most of your closet is pink if it makes you happy!
-
Forgiveness is the best way to heal a broken heart. It doesn’t help anyone to stay sad, mad, or hurt. Let it go when you’re ready and you’ll find that your heart has healed and softened a bit.
-
Share your deepest secrets with your best friend.
-
Trust and love.
-
Show your appreciation; say thank you and mean it. If you forget, tell them when you remember.
-
Say you’re sorry and mean it.
-
Exercise - especially when you don’t want to.
-
Be brave enough to do the thing that you think you cannot do. Be strong and have courage.
-
Stand up for yourself. Don’t give in to what others think is the right thing to do when you know it’s not.
-
Cultivate your relationships and appreciate your differences. We all have something to learn from each other.
-
If you think you might regret it, you probably will.
-
Take time to have fun, relax, and simply be.
-
Be a good listener.
-
Have fun with your family, make memories. Don’t spend too much time obsessing over the digital scrapbook layouts of said memories.
-
It’s OK to take an obscene amount of photographs, even if your hard drive doesn’t think so.
-
Call your mom often or, at least, send an email with more than two words. (Hi, Mom!)
-
Laugh. Lots. And, often!
-
It’s OK to cry. Let it out. Like after a good rain, things will soon blossom.
-
True beauty radiates from within. Let your inner beauty shine.
-
Be kind to others and, just as important, be kind to yourself.
-
Try something new; expand your horizons. You might discover your new favorite thing.
-
Clean up your mess right after you make it. It’s much easier now than later.
-
Listen to music and dance. Experience new music. Just make sure you listen to it first before you buy it.
-
Read books, especially the ones that make you laugh.
-
Give yourself permission. Go ahead, it’s OK!
-
Do something that you love to do, be happy doing it, and it will make other people happy along the way.
-
Be happy, and when you don’t feel like you are, fake it until you make it.
-
Share and play nice, especially when you don’t want to.
-
Keep your spirit young. Watch the sunset, make wishes on shooting stars and dandelion fluffs, and imagine funny creatures in the shapes of clouds.
-
If you’re lonely, take in a pet. Just make sure it’s housebroken, fixed, and declawed. Make sure you’re ready for that long-term commitment. He might stick around for a long time. (I’m talking pets here.)
-
Drink water, eat your vegetables, and make other good choices. Chocolate is always an acceptable choice, within reason of course.
-
All that stuff that seems so overwhelming right now, someday it will not matter. Remember what’s important and what really matters.
-
Try not to dwell and over-think things. Move on and come back to it later if you must.
-
Be OK with who you are. Keep learning and doing the best you can. Better yet, be amazing.
- Amanda

ScrapSimple Club Concepts |

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!
February’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Amanda Sok and Kerry Veale. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

Creative ideas:
-
Mother's Day will be here before you know it – begin working on a family photo album for a mom or grandmother following the theme of “As Time Goes By,” or make a 4”x6” book, using the Brush Set: 4 x 6 Florid Ink on each page. Use the other February ScrapSimple Club products to embellish the pages.
-
ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Fragments works nicely to make custom labels for wine, jams/jellies, homemade beauty items, or candles.
-
Use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Vintage Millinery Flowers to digitally add a flower to a girl's hair in a photo.
-
Create a double photo frame by using one Brush Set: 4x6 Florid Ink to frame a photo. Select a strong color from the photo to brush another photo frame from the Brush Set: 4x6 Florid Ink and place it to the side and bottom of the original photo.

Layout by Kerry Veale

-
The Brush Set: Florid Ink is a great way to make quick and easy recipe cards.
-
Try this layout idea for vintage family photos - use the square overlays in ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Worn Overlays to frame square vintage photos. Use the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Vintage Millinery Flowers and ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Fragments to create a collage accenting the photos.
-
Use the Brush Set: Florid Ink to frame 4x6 wedding photos.
-
Use the “Base2” scalloped edge paper template available in ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Florid Overlays to make a postage stamp layout.

Layout by Mandy Steward

-
Easter photos go along well with the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Worn Overlays. Embellish the photo with the lace, flowers, and word art available in ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Fragments.
-
Using the Brush Set: Florid Ink, reverse the colors and use it as a cool photo mask for a vintage or frilly layout.
-
Create a commemorative wedding or anniversary pillow: Make a layout using the “Today” template from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Florid Overlays and your photos from a wedding or anniversary. Use the other February ScrapSimple Club products to embellish the layout; print out on fabric, and use as the center of a decorative pillow.
-
Scrapbook a layout with photos of spring flowers and/or garden seedlings. Use the Brush Set: Florid Ink or ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Worn Overlays to frame the photos and use the “Today” paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Florid Overlays to date the photos. Embellish with ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Fragments and ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Vintage Millinery Flowers.
