“Memories of a Chinese Childhood” by Debbie Layden

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The images in this layout were very low quailty and had been very mistreated, yet they were priceless to me and I desperately wanted to create a layout using them. Ro has a wonderful product that allowed me to keep them small and crop out the damage: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Chain Gang.

To create the look of a Chinese memory chain, I first opened all the images and laid them underneath the chain. I used Ctrl+T to resize the images to get the desired look. Then, I used my Eraser Tool to remove the excess portions of the image. Finally, I opened Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001 and applied the style to the chain! Done! Just another example of why I love ScrapSimple Templates and Styles!

Name of challenge: Childhood Memories

Journaling: One child has thousands and the other child has 24 - but those 24 images are more valuable than anything else I have ever taken a picture of. Those 24 images are her childhood memories - a life in a land I barely know. They tell the story of a little girl who, in the first 18 to 20 months of her life, faced abandonment on a middle school step, a little girl who made a journey across the Chinese countryside, a little girl who faced an uncertain future. These images exist not because someone wanted to capture a memory, but because the state required that she be photographed once a month. There are no happy smiles or giggly grins. Sometimes I look into those deep, big brown eyes and wonder, what does she remember, what will be her childhood memories of China?

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To apply two different styles on the chain from Ro’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Chain Gang, I selected the part on which I wanted another style with the Magic Wand, Contiguous unchecked, right-clicked on it with my mouse and chose “Layer via Copy.” Then I applied Erica’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Gold 5401 on the bottom layer with the chain and Durin’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Pearl 5101 on the new layer on top.

Journaling: I grew up in a place and time where life was simple. I didn’t have much in way of toys, but I don’t recall ever being bored. I remember always being outdoors, playing games like hopscotch, tag, hide-and-seek, or riding around in my red bicycle. It was a simple childhood, but one that is filled with wonderful memories.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Because I wanted to justify my text, I first had to create a text box. I selected the Text Tool and used my mouse to click and drag a text box roughly covering the area I wanted my journaling to occupy. I had already typed my text in Microsoft Word, so I copied and pasted it into the text box. Then, to justify my text, I highlighted it and held down Cmd+Shift+J (Ctrl+Shift+J on a PC). You can only justify text in PSE when you have drawn a text box. It will not work if you only click and type.

Journaling: I used to love playing with my brother, Cody. We could spend hours imagining that we were characters from the Star Wars movies fighting the Dark Side of the Force. Our bunk beds became the Millennium Falcon....

Our beds could be anything and they could transport us anywhere. When we carefully stuffed a blanket into the rail of the top bunk to hang down like a wall for the bottom bunk, our beds became a submarine.

Hanging action figures from strings made our beds into a puppet theatre.

Our beds were a safe haven in a time of turbulence. During our parents’ divorce, Cody and I shared a room - even though we each had one of our own. We loved each other’s company. We love each other’s company still.

I am so glad my brother and I had the experiences we had together growing up. We are not strangers, we are more than kinfolk, we are friends. While our beds were a source of playtime and imagination, they were a source of refuge and comfort. They represented togetherness in a time of separation.

A Designers Life: Melissa Renfro

If Digital Scrapbooking Smelled As Good As It Looks

If digital scrapbooking smelled as good as it looks, I would be much more addicted to it than I already am. (Is that really possible?) I am a sucker for anything that smells good and I am not really that particular about whether it is the fruity scent of my tea, the rich toasty smell of my candles, or the warm lavender scent of my herbal heat pack that I wrap around my shoulders. Something about a wonderfully luxurious scent can just take me away.

Perhaps, it could be that my nose is accosted by my normal everyday smells. You know, the kind of smells created by five small boys and one not-so-small husband. Too often, it is my chore to find the answer to the question, “Why does the kitchen/bathroom/car smell like that, Mom?” It is my job to clean out the mystery containers in the refrigerator. No wonder I stop for just a second longer than I need to when I pass by my cupboard full of tea or take a few minutes longer in the shower to wash my face again with my almond-scented facial bar.

There are a few scents that bring back vivid memories of things I remember fondly. The smell of rising yeast dough in a warm kitchen takes me back to late summer days at my great-grandmother’s house. The smell of a wood-burning stove on a crisp fall morning reminds me of growing up in Colorado. Then there is the smell of the sweet blossoms of a Palo Verde tree that is so unique to Tucson, Arizona, where I lived for 14 years. It was always a signal of springtime.

One of the wonderful traditions that my friends and I have here in Albuquerque is the St. James Tea Room. This tea room serves a three course tea that takes two hours to complete. Everyone is served tea in semi-private rooms, some that are so small and intimate that they seat only two people. It is one of those girly things that I just love. They serve three kinds of tea and the most scrumptious and unique food. This is one of those wonderful little hide-a-ways where time stands still and you can enjoy life, friendships, and little pleasures. At the end of your tea, they bring you a warm, lavender-scented washcloth to wash your hands. The scent lingers for hours afterward, reminding you of the pleasant and relaxing time you had.

Something about these wonderful scents makes me pause for a moment and breathe deeply - resting my mind from busyness and forgetting for a moment that all of the problems in the world need to be solved today. Sometimes, I think I go full speed ahead into things. I find I am so occupied with tasks, chores, and things I want to get caught up on that I need these few seconds to really soak in how wonderful God’s world really is. We need just a few minutes here and there to remember that life is not all work and to thank God for lovely and beautiful things, for the gifts he has given us. I believe we are meant to actually enjoy things along the way.

So, even though the beautiful digital scrapbook supplies from Scrap Girls have no scent, I make up for it by sitting here with my fragrant sparkling sugar plum tea, my harvest spice and apple candle, and my lavender and mint warm herbal heat wrap around my shoulders. I enjoy the few moments I have playing with pictures, creating beautiful memory-filled pages and loving the life that God has given me.

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!

January’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Angie Briggs and Shalae Tippetts. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

---

Creative ideas:

  • Brush Set: Time Stamped pairs up nicely with any clock embellishment or with ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Date Clock – just place the clock in the opening to display the time or date.

  • To make a background paper with lots of texture: Select two pre-made papers from a collection that you like. Clip one of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off The Wall templates to your bottom paper and play with the blending mode, opacity, and color balance to give the paper below an aged and textured look. Then clip one of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off the Wall - Torn to the second pre-made paper (make sure they are above the other layers in your Layers Palette). Again, play with the blending mode, opacity, and color balance to give your top newly torn paper an entirely new look!

  • ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off The Wall are wonderful for creating treasure map papers or a great background for an old letter or recipe.

  • Use the “all about U” word art located in the ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Here and Now for college themed layouts (word play on the U for “U”niversity). Go one step further and use the other word art pieces in this set to create an entire album for a current or former collage student.

  • Create a patchwork background, photo matte, or frame by “piecing” together several different pattern papers with Dynamic Brush Set: Embroidered Stitches 4901.

  • Use the Brush Set: Time Stamped to indicate the day on your SG 52 layouts. (See our message board for more details!)

  • Use Dynamic Brush Set: Embroidered Stitches 4901 with ScrapSimple Tools – Action: Edge It 5001 PS or PSE to frame photos or edge a paper.

  • ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off the Wall and ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off the Wall – Torn are excellent for making pre-made “pretty” products more masculine for layouts of the men in your life.

  • ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Here and Now is a must-have for all things birthday. Several of the word arts are great for birthday layouts, but it's also perfect for creating birthday cards or invitations to the party. In honor of the birthday boy or girl, create a yearly layout documenting your child's favorites: favorite color, song, food, toy, book, TV show, etc.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. Don't Risk Losing Your Digital Scrapbooks

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
