Life Muses by Ro: It’s Not Over Until It’s Over

I heard her voice coming from the labor room next to me. In the last stages of labor, she panicked and began to scream, “Let me out of here! Give me my clothes. I can't do this. I'm going home.”

The tone of her voice made it obvious that she was serious; she thought she had the choice to leave.

But, of course, she couldn't go home. She had decided months ago to have a baby and now she had to deliver her child.

Sometimes, we are like my labor room neighbor. We discover that we chose something that takes gumption to get through. It is better, during those experiences, to grit our teeth and keep our eyes on the end of the race.

Sometimes, we win and get our prize. Sometimes, we merely gain wisdom about making better choices. But, until we get in there and see it to completion, we will remain stuck.

Eventually, my labor room neighbor went to the delivery room where she pushed out a beautiful baby. My guess is that she is now happy she had to finish the job which brought her such a wonderful gift.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Kerning in Photoshop Elements

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 with Windows XP.

The use of words is a topic that is close to my heart. It was only natural for me to extend that passion into a project on typography and fun ways to include words in digital scrapbooking layouts. That venture became the Word Play eBook and I’d like to share with you one of my favorite text techniques from that collection of tutorials. (Most of the tutorials work amazingly well in Photoshop as well as Photoshop Elements.)

Begin with your photos and papers on your layout. On the Layers Palette, the top layer needs to be active. On the toolbar, select the Move Tool.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Drag Type Path onto layout.

Open a type path. Click+Drag the type path onto the layout. For this example, I am using Valerie Randall’s ScrapSimple Type Paths: Shapes 2101 1-circle-OUT.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Resize Type Path.

Click Ctrl+T (Cmd+T) or Image> Transform> Free Transform to resize the type path. On the options bar, select “Constrain Proportions” and change the Width/Height to 75%. Also, change the angle to 180°. (This will bring the center of the text path to the top of the circle.) Click the green commit checkmark to accept the changes.

On the Layers Palette, double-click on the type path thumbnail. This will highlight all of the text on the path and automatically select the Type Tool. On the options bar, select your font, size, and alignment. For this example, Arial Black, 75 points, and Center Text are used.

Click the green commit checkmark to accept the changes. Use the Move Tool to shift the title into position on the layout.

Kerning text (reducing the space between two letters of typeface) is not an adjustment available in Photoshop Elements. There are several ways, however, to work around this. The following shortcut is the quickest method, but has the least amount of customization.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Go to Edit> Preferences> Type.

Go to Edit> Preferences> Type. A pop-up menu will appear. Under Type Options, select “Show Asian Text Options” and then click “OK.”

For the sample, Word Play eBook, Tutorial One - Technique Two, Alternate Versions One and Two, are referenced. Alternate Version Two is used in this tutorial.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Choose a percentage.

On the Layers Palette, double-click on the title layer thumbnail to highlight it. The Type Tool will automatically be selected. On the options bar, the Asian text icon will be visible. Click on it and the Asian text options menu becomes visible. Click on the down arrow to the right of 0% to open a drop-down menu with percentages. The higher the percentage, the more the text will be condensed together. Click to choose the percentage and then the green commit checkmark to accept the changes. You will see the letters move closer together – this is the fake “kerning” taking place.

A second layer is added to the title and the process is repeated. For this example, 100% is used.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Before and after samples.

The “before” image is without using the Asian text options and the “after” image shows the effect with the Asian text options set at 100%. Keep in mind that each font will require different amounts of kerning between certain letters. You will have to make adjustments accordingly.

January Board Game: Jumpstart January!

It's time to kick off the new year with fun and focus on scrapbooking! And a few prizes thrown in never hurt, right? Join us on the message board this month for “Jumpstart January!” This is a message board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from January 1-30. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses, or gallery posting. Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the ScrapGirls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)
