Life Muses by Ro: Be Brave and Tug! |
It was always there - itching and burning and bothering me. I didn't know why this particular incision was taking so much longer to heal than I expected it to. I also didn't know why I couldn't stop catching every virus that came into the vicinity. Maybe I was just being impatient, but after two months of feeling lousy, I wanted to feel better so I could move on. I finally decided to go to an acupuncturist to see if she could help.
After describing my pain to her, she asked to look at my incision. As soon as she saw it, she exclaimed, “You still have a stitch in there!”
Shocked, I asked, “Are you sure? Maybe it is a scar.”
She shook her head. “No, I'm looking at a black thread with a knot in it.”
I couldn't believe my ears. This was the second time a stitch was found since the doctor had “removed” the stitches. The first stray stitch was discovered when my husband and I had been trying to determine why the wound wasn't healing properly and why I had an infection. Gary pulled it out and the site got well. But, we overlooked this second stitch because we hadn't looked hard at the other side of the wound and missed it.
I asked the acupuncturist to pull it out for me and, to her credit, she tried. But, it didn't want to slip out easily and, as she didn't want to hurt me, she stopped. I didn't know what to do as I was away from home on business and my husband wasn't available to help.
The acupuncturist finished inserting the needles for the treatment and then left me in the room to rest. I did what anyone would do under such circumstances; I fell asleep.
I began to dream about the bicycle I had received for Christmas when I was eight. It was a purple banana seat wonder and came complete with streamers and a basket. I loved my bike and rode it everywhere.
The dream started out wonderfully. I could feel the wind on my face as I rode. I could see my old neighborhood. I could hear the sound of the gravel crunch under my wheels as I streaked up the street. Suddenly, I remembered why I had scars on my knees. One day, I hit a big patch of gravel and tumbled over, getting rocks inside the skin over my kneecaps.
When I came crying at the front door, my mother and grandmother consulted together and determined that someone would have to remove the rocks. (In those days, children didn’t go to doctors for such events. Instead, the closest adult to the child administered first aid.) My mother tried to remove them, but I screamed and wiggled away. Next, my grandmother attempted to do remove them, but after she saw that she, too, would fail, she announced that I would have to take them out myself. I took the tweezers willingly, reasoning that at least I could feel where the skin ended and the kneecap began. After my fishing expedition was over, a small mound of gravel sat on the table.
My grandmother beamed at me. “You are so tough,” she said. “I don't think I've seen a child as brave as you are.”
I felt so proud of myself. I had done something hard and had succeeded.
As soon as this memory ran through my dream, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to pull the stitch out myself.
After I went back to my room, I collected my tweezers and fingernail clippers and went to work. It wasn't easy as the skin had partially grown over the knot. I almost gave up partway through the procedure, thinking that I might have to give up and find a doctor to help me.
But then, my grandmother's voice came to me. “You're tough. You can do this.”
I nodded. Yes, I could do it. It was only one stitch.
I grunted and stretched and squirmed. I poked and prodded and pulled. I gritted my teeth and, at last, the foreign object came out. I was free!
Life is like that sometimes. We occasionally find that we have something or someone to remove from our lives. We must remove the stitch or the sore will continue to hurt and ooze. Removing them is not easy, but once we’ve finished, we feel relief and pride in ourselves that we were brave enough to do it. We are free to heal. We are free to be happy.

Question: I have been using PSP XI for a long time and never had issues with it lagging, but now that I have PSP X2, I realize how SLOW everything is moving. I don't know if it's an error with the program itself or if I need to have my laptop overhauled. Any ideas? I never get any warning or error messages. It just takes several seconds - sometimes minutes - for it to follow through processes. Even to “undo” takes quite a bit of time. Any hints, secrets, or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Answer 1: The only thing I can suggest is to just go through the usual methods of clearing your Temporary Internet Files, doing a scan disk, and defragging your hard drive if it needs it. It seems I used to have a problem with the organizer, so I don't use it so much now. And, when I do, I make sure to CLOSE the organizer before closing the program. This seems to help. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times for various reasons. This, of course, is assuming that you have lots of memory in RAM, the operating system you're running, etc. I have Vista, PSP X2, and 4GB of RAM.
Answer 2: You should upgrade the RAM. I have PSP XI and I upgraded the RAM to 2.4GB. If I ever go up to PSP X2, then I'll upgrade the RAM to 4GB first. Considering I used Version Nine for three years before installing XI, it may take me a while before I get X2.
Answer 3: I would definitely check your virtual memory settings. This adjustment can make a world of difference.
- Right-click on “My Computer” and choose “Properties.”
- Click on the “Advanced” tab.
- Click on the settings button for “Performance.”
- Click on the “Advanced” tab again.
- Click on the “Change” button for “Virtual Memory.”
- In the bottom section of the window there will be an allocated number and a recommended number. The allocated number should be at least as large as the recommended number. You can change this setting just above where it tells the current settings.
I have a really old laptop and, even with my virtual memory set high, I have to clear the history on my layouts often or I crash. If you can live without the “Undo” feature, clear your history (or close your layout) every once in a while. Also, empty your clipboard right after pasting a large graphic into a layout. This will help your computer's performance.
Response: Thanks to all for the help so far. I've double-checked my virtual memory and it was already set as you had indicated. I am in the process of uninstalling stuff that is taking up space and no longer needed or hasn't been used in over a year. I'm going to defrag when I'm all done with this and then maybe I can upgrade my RAM when I'm all done. My husband wants me to get an external hard drive for all of my scrapbooking stuff. Do you think this will do the trick? I don't know much about computer terminology. I just know how to use them. I can't fix them!
Answer 4: Another option is to check what processes automatically open when you start your computer. For example, the auto-sync program for my palm pilot automatically loads at start-up and it's a huge chunk of memory for a process I use once every couple of days. When I'm going to crop, I Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close that program, opening up that memory for other stuff. There are about five programs that I can close that auto-load. I also deactivate my anti-virus if I'm absolutely sure I won't go online. Theoretically, if it's on my hard drive, the A/V program has already checked it and deemed it safe. My A/V program sucks memory big time.
Answer 5: If you do not have enough RAM (memory) your PC will use your hard drive free space to run some things. If there is no free space, your PC will be slow - not just PSP. It will help if you move your photos and scrap stuff to a nice big external drive. More memory is always good. We have 4GB and Vista on this laptop.

Question: I am really new to PSP X2. I don’t know much about layers and things. Can you please tell me in step-by-step directions how to put my girl’s picture under the frame? I am using the sunflower frame and I tried to just copy and paste it, but it hides the sunflower. I know that I need to work in layers, but since I am not a reader and really need perceptual help, if you could just tell me in baby steps how to do it, I would greatly appreciate it. I am trying to get this done before my parents come for Halloween and it is very frustrating! I really appreciate it!
Answer 1: I'm not sure which frame you are using but yes, you need to work in layers. If you have your frame open first, then copy and paste the picture, it will create a new layer on top of the frame. If you look to the right side of your screen, you should see a Layers Palette. You can move the picture layer one of two ways. First, highlight the picture layer. Now, you can either right-click on it with your mouse and using the drop-down menu, choose “arrange” and then “move down,” or you can left-click and hold and drag that layer below the frame layer in the Layers Palette.
Answer 2: I always have my photo open first. I then copy and paste the frame image to the photo layer. That adds the frame above the photo in my layers stack.

Question: I am trying to use MRE_SS_LayoutTemplates_Faded in PSP XI and am following the directions that came with the template. I have used it before – somewhat successfully. I'm trying to use this same product again and I cannot get the pictures to show through at all. I have placed my pictures underneath the template as instructed. I then highlight the template with my Magic Wand and then select Color Fill with my background paper selected. I have also tried inverting the selection to see if that would help, but the results are basically the same. What step am I missing? Do I have a corrupted file? Have any other PSP users encountered the same issue and resolved/not resolved it? I was hoping to use this on a calendar page, but may be running out of time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Answer 1: I don't have those. What did the instructions say? Can you also do a Hue/Saturation/Lightness and just lighten the black to a medium gray and see how that works? I would make a copy of the template, do the above, put the photo on top of it and follow the directions as normal and see how that works.
Answer 2: I am using the instructions that came with the template, but they are also the same as found in the university here:
http://www.scrapgirls.com/
select_and_fill_techniques_for_scrapsimple_templates_in_psp.htm
For some reason, when using the Magic Wand, it is not selecting all of the black area, but just a little smidge of an area. If I put the photo on top of the template, then I lose the fading, which is the whole reason I bought the template. Does this make sense?
Answer 3: Have you tried using “New Mask Layer from Image” on your layout with the photos, while keeping the faded layout template open as a second image?
Using PSP X2:
- Choose your photo layout, but have the layout template open.
- Go to Layers> New Mask Layer> From Image.
- Source window: choose the layout template file.
- Choose “Source Opacity.”
If the fading looks “backward,” undo/redo choosing “Invert Mask Data.” I don't have the template set you are using, but I think this might work for you. Quite often, when I use a “Mask Layer from Image,” I'll put a solid white layer behind the layer I'm masking because the mask creates a partially opaque layer.

Question: I create flyers (brochures) for my church quite regularly, and whenever I open up PSP, I have to size the new document for the particular size of flyers we use. I want to create a preset file because the default list doesn't come with a file the exact size that I need. I don’t see how to create it from the preset dialog box, so I created the file and then saved it into the preset file in my PSP. However, I didn't know what extension to give it, so I just gave it the PSPI extension.
Even though the presets are set to look in that folder, it doesn't see my new file! I tried re-starting PSP. I'm wondering if I have to import the image into that file instead of just saving it there. I'd love to do this for my scrapbook pages as well, so that I don't have to retype the specs in every time. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help?
Answer 1: I think you may have to save it as a template rather than a preset. Check with the PSP website about templates. I haven't made many, but what I do is make a copy of what I want and save it as a template with the PSPIMAGE extension. Then, when I need to use it, I open it and make a working copy of it, closing the main template and then using the working copy. It’s more steps, but it works for me.
Answer 2: I just had a look in X2 and I'm sure it’s the same in X. (You didn’t say which version you have.) Select File> New and the dialogue box comes up. Set up the size and dpi of your pamphlet and then look on the right of the dialogue box. There are four icons in a vertical column and the top one is a little disk. Click on this and a “Save As” dialogue box comes up. Type in the name you want to save it as and then look in the presets drop-down and it will be there. I learned to do this to set up a 12x12 300 dpi page!
Answer 3: That's the way I do mine. I have presets for almost everything I do - desktops, calendars, cards, everything. It saves a lot of time. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
