“Coping With Life” by Jennifer Labre

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Sometimes all you need is a subtle embellishment to really make your layout unique. Brushes are great for this. In my layout, I used the Brush Set: Decorative Swirls for a subtle but elegant touch. I “stamped” each brush in white and then selected the Blend Mode of “Screen” and reduced the opacity. The brushes subtly frame the baby brush image and quote, drawing your eye to them.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Lori Cook has some amazing brushes and I love to scrapbook with brushes! For this layout, I knew I wanted to use Lori’s Brush Set: Decorative Swirls Grunged and I loved the way that it could be paired with her Brush Set: Decorative Accents, but that wasn’t grunged. So to make it look like the Grunged Swirl, I first stamped the Decorative Accent I wanted to use on my layout on its own layer. Then, I switched brushes and used Lori’s Brush Set: Grunge, but instead of adding to the layout, I wanted to subtract. So, I used my Eraser Tool to take away some of the color and give my Decorative Accent the same look as my swirl!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love to sew... and I love metallic thread, so to make my stitching look like it uses metallic thread, I applied a glitter style to it! Perfect! And a lot easier than sewing with metallic thread in my sewing machine!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Filmstrips are a great way to repeat a single photo. To create more visual interest, I converted my colored photo into black and white, resized it to fit the filmstrip, and used a “Normal” Blend Mode for the bottom strip, and “Hard Light” for the strip on top.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Since Lori’s products are so unique, I wanted to create a fun photo treatment that would really showcase how versatile and artsy digital scrapbooking can be. By using her ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Weaved and Woven over a base of the photo that I had blended into my background paper (I used a layer mask with her Grunge brushes to clear away any distracting areas), I really achieved a fun look with very feminine papers. I purposely left a large area of white (from a window) in my photograph so that the template (which I flipped and rotated) would have a blank area where I could do my journaling. I can see myself incorporating these templates into a LOT of fun projects in the future!

A Designers Life: Mandy Steward |
A Moment
I touched my two-month-old baby’s skin yesterday. I don’t mean that I brushed against it while changing his diaper. I don’t mean that natural skin touching that occurs while I am nursing him, burping him, rocking him, or picking him up to put him in his car seat as I’m rushing out the door to run errands.
I mean I stopped what I was doing, stopped my duties as a mom, and I felt, with every emotion in my body, his cheek rubbing up against mine. I heard his small, soft, little breaths and smelled their innocent sweetness. I gazed into his eyes and marveled at who he was, his very life, and wondered at what that life will look like as it plays out.
But, his skin - his skin is what I remember from that moment. Its softness, its warmth, its life. I realized how often I come in contact with it and truly think nothing of it. Think nothing of the miracle it took to create that skin. Think nothing of the fragility of his little body covered by that perfect skin. Think nothing of how quickly that skin will change and become rougher, older, more worn.
Life is funny that way, isn’t it? We don’t taste life deeply in any sort of consistent manner. We only taste it in bits and pieces - in moments. There is so much going on around us - so much activity. That activity isn’t necessarily bad. Activity can keep us healthy. It can develop friendships. It can allow us opportunities to create, to serve, to learn. But, I need both. I need activity and rest. There are times for each.
Yesterday, I got a much needed moment of rest. As I felt baby Luther’s skin on mine, it was as if my soul took a deep breath. I felt refocused. I felt things in my life slip into perspective. I felt my heart overflowing with love and joy and thankfulness. All from a single touch.
I think our senses are so important to these moments of rest in our life - the moments where we get to let our soul take a deep breath. My senses are so often ignored, but I’m trying to be more aware of them and how vital they are to my life. There is a reason that quote “Stop and smell the roses” resounds so beautifully with us. Smells, touches, sounds (like music or laughter), sights, and tastes can add so much richness to our life. Focusing on our senses, even if but for a few seconds, can allow our soul to rest. I am valuing these “moments” in my life and I am trying to stop and catch more and more of them to savor.
- Mandy

Favorite product I've designed:
Overlayed Collection

For a long time, I have enjoyed the look of using transparencies or overlays in art projects. For instance, I recently cut up baseball card protectors and made some pages in a mini-book out of them. I like the different creative ways you can use a see-through element. One day, it just clicked in my head. What would a see-through digital collection look like?
So, I set to work designing the Overlayed Collection. I wanted it to be versatile, so I kept the colors to basic blacks and whites. I like how flexible it ended up being. There are some ornate, pretty designs like the circular papers and there are some fun, light designs like the stripes. Once I finished the papers, I thought it would be challenging to carry the same transparent look into the alphas, the word art, and the embellishments. The end result is a collection that I like to use bits and pieces from as an add-on accent in many of my layouts.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
