Customer Muse: I Still Believe

Despite multiple life challenges and hardships, creativity is the biggest thing that has led me back on the road to finding “me.”

During a recent tragedy, my recovery began as an overwhelming feeling in a rubber stamp store when I saw a stamp with a quote about being lost. It brought me to tears in the middle of the store and it prompted a release of everything that I had been trying to express with words, but couldn't. It just started pouring out. As I went through the store, I saw things with a different eye.

I went home and started going through my scrapbook and rubber stamp supplies, pulling out and piling up everything that struck a chord or “spoke” to me. I cried and cried for hours as I did so. I was partially relieved and partially overwhelmed, partially amazed and partially thankful for a way to express what was going on inside. The process exhausted me, but it also helped me find the voice that I couldn't find any other way. Over the next several days, I made several scrapbook pages that gave a window to my inner turmoil and pain... helping me to begin to heal.

I believe strongly in creativity. That was the one thing which held my interest and excited me as a child. My parents have always been very admiring of my art, in whatever form it took, even when it was immature and/or rustic. It was both funny and timely that I recently found a rock I had decoupaged a greeting card illustration on as a child. It was in the back of my mom's kitchen cabinet. At the time I made it, I was inspired by a decal block of wood that I had gotten as a gift for my mom at the school craft fair.

I always admired handmade things, long before I was aware of the time, effort, and love required to create the art. Creativity has been a constant in my life since childhood and one that I haven't made time for in the last few years due to time constraints. Even while in distress once, I sewed a small quilt for one of my dogs. I remember sobbing as I cut it out and sewed it. I had a horrific headache, yet the process comforted me.

I am really in a good space, a healthy space, when I see something with possibilities or it sparks a creative idea. Even more so when my idea is to use it in a way other than what it was intended or designed for. It utilizes a different part of my thoughts and takes me far away from all that is distressing or worrying me.

Yes, I still believe in creativity and now I value that belief even more. I need to recognize the importance of creativity in my world and make time for it, the same as one would exercise their body or nurture a relationship.

January Board Game: Jumpstart January!

It's time to kick off the new year with fun and focus on scrapbooking! And a few prizes thrown in never hurt, right? Join us on the message board this month for “Jumpstart January!” This is a message board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from January 1-30. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses, or gallery posting. Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the ScrapGirls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)

January Layout Contest: With a new year before us, let’s take a moment to think about the year just past. For this contest, I would like you to choose your favorite moment of 2008 and scrap it. If you have already scrapped that special moment, do another layout using a style that you don’t normally use. January Mid-Month Layout Contest: It's the beginning of a new year, a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. January is a time for resolutions and setting goals.
