Life Muses by Ro: Clutch-and-Clutter Disorder

Sometimes, I open my eyes and see. I mean I really see my life. I look around myself and take in what I’ve been stepping and stumbling over. I realize why I feel like my hair hasn’t been combed, my shirts are rumpled, and my socks are falling down. I have fallen into a disorder whose chief symptoms include clutter, confusion, and mental constipation.

Name of disorder: Clutch-and-Clutter

Clutch-and-Clutter disorder sneaks up silently on me, like a cat sneaking into a room. First, I allow my email inbox to overflow. Then, I start stacking my snail mail, telling myself that I’ll get to it in a bit. Next, I toss pens, empty water bottles, CD covers, and half-full notebooks onto my side table so I will remember that I need to take care of them.

I know I’m going downhill when I begin writing lists I forget to look at and write notes I never read. When my disorder reaches a fever pitch, I send an email to myself in a vain attempt to remember what I need to do. I know I am truly sick when I am filled with a numb sense that I am not getting anything done.

I recently caught Clutch-and-Clutter disorder. When I realized I had it, I sat in my reading chair and breathed. And then, after I shook my shirt a few times, I resolved to get back on track.

Here are a few of my favorite methods for getting rid of Clutch-and-Clutter.

Clean your email inbox. Force yourself to make a decision about every email that arrives. You will put the item on your task list, delete it, or archive it. No fair keeping it in the inbox pile, telling yourself that you will think about it later. You won’t. Once your inbox is clean, keep it clean. This will be easier if you...
Only check your email a couple of times a day. Less is more. Schedule when you will take care of email. If you allow yourself to fall into the “do it as it comes in” trap, you won’t get anything done - not even your email.
Remove every unnecessary item from your workspace and surrounding walls. Clearing your space will clear your mind. You don’t have to throw things away, necessarily, but find a place where you can put your supplies when you are not using them. Do you really need to see every pair of scissors you have every single moment of every day? Do you actually need to see every photograph you have taken since the third grade? I suspect not. Put them into a drawer or an album. You’ll remember where you put your scissors and when you look in your photo album, you’ll enjoy seeing what you have.
Make a list of things you need to do. Cross out every item that isn’t critical. If the items ever become critical, you’ll know it and, meanwhile, you won’t feel overwhelmed with your life. The shorter the list, the better.
Create a paperwork inbox. Empty it almost every day. Force yourself to make decisions and take action. Throw things away with abandon. Believe me, you won’t find it is easier to get through your stack on another day. But, if you take care of your work regularly, the work never stacks up to a discouraging level.

If you are like me and have caught Clutch-and-Clutter disorder, try some of these tricks and see if they help you. But please... don’t focus on perfection. Any progress you make is sure to make you feel better!

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Glowing Swirls

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Mac OS X.

Swirl brushes are so much fun to play with and I believe you can never have too many different kinds! I want to show you a way to give them a dreamy effect by adding a soft glow.

Begin by choosing a set of swirl brushes and load them into Photoshop as explained in the instructions you received with your brush purchase. I have chosen to use the digital scrapbooking Brush Set: Breathe Swirls.

Select the brush you would like to use from the brushes drop-down menu.

Now, create a new layer in your Layers Palette for your brushwork and then choose the color you’d like to brush with by double-clicking on the foreground swatch in the Tools Palette. You can also use the Eyedropper Tool to pick a lighter shade from your background paper. I have found that the best results come from choosing a slightly lighter shade than the color of the background paper that your swirls will be blending with.

With your swirl brush selected, go up to the top toolbar and change the Blend Mode to “Screen” and set the Opacity to 73%.

Now, make sure you have selected the new empty layer in the Layers Palette and begin brushing.

With your brush layer still selected in the Layers Palette, click on the Layer Styles button at the bottom of the palette and choose “Outer Glow.”

When the Layer Styles popup box appears, choose these settings:

Blend Mode: Color Dodge
Opacity: 53%
Noise: 0%
Color: soft yellow or off-white
Technique: Softer
Spread: 0%
Size: 29 px

You can leave everything else at its default setting. (Note that these settings, especially color, may vary depending on the color of your background paper, so some experimenting may be necessary.)

Now that your layer style has been set for the swirls, keep the swirl layer selected in the Layers Palette and set the Blend Mode to “Overlay.” Now, drop the Opacity of the layer to 56%. (Note that these settings can be experimented with as well to find a look that you like best.)

You now have a separate layer of swirls that can be manipulated further if you wish, or you can choose to merge the two layers together and add the rest of your embellishments and journaling.

January Board Game: Jumpstart January!

It's time to kick off the new year with fun and focus on scrapbooking! And a few prizes thrown in never hurt, right? Join us on the message board this month for “Jumpstart January!” This is a message board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from January 1-30. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses, or gallery posting. Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the ScrapGirls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)

January Layout Contest: With a new year before us, let’s take a moment to think about the year just past. For this contest, I would like you to choose your favorite moment of 2008 and scrap it. If you have already scrapped that special moment, do another layout using a style that you don’t normally use.
