“Blessings” by Pat Bowman
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use the word “blessing” that was stamped on the blue paper from the Many Thanks Collection Mini, so I did a Image> Rotate Canvas> 90 deg CCW before I clipped it to the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Torn Edges. To bring more of the blue into the layout, I stamped with the Brush Set: Framed Grunge Mini behind the photos and applied one of the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Stamped - Blues 4902 - Biggie.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layout

“Enjoy Life” by Amy Lemaniak

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the frame around my photo, I used Dinny’s Brush Set: Bitsy Frame Mini and stamped it onto a new layer. I then brought my photo onto my layout and arranged it as the layer below my stamped frame. I used my Lasso Tool to draw around the border of the frame. Then, with the photo layer active, I selected the inverse and then deleted the extra parts of my photo outside the frame.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

“My Pregnancy” by Jennifer Labre
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
A subtle, yet effective, way to add a pop of color to any layout is with the Scrap Girls brushes. On this layout, I just wanted an extra pop of color behind the pregnancy calculator. It needed something... simply laying it across the black background wasn’t enough for me. So I chose one of the brushes from the Brush Set: Rotations Biggie. (Actually, I just opened up the PNG file I wanted to use and added that to my page directly.) I then went to my Layers Palette and down at the bottom selected the “f” icon to add a Layer Style. I chose Gradient Overlay. Once the popup opened for the gradient overlay, I changed the gradient to match colors in my layout and I now have an extra pop of color that adds to the overall feel of my layout.

“Daddy’s Girl” by Kelly Favor-Chronister
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To add emphasis to the title, I used a single stroke from Amanda Sok’s Brush Set: Ultimate Grunge. Because the brush was much taller (top to bottom) than I wanted, I went to the brush options menu and changed the “roundness” until I was pleased with the look. After stamping a solid blue color taken from the blue paper in Shalae Tippetts’ Newborn Collection, I thought it looked a little static, so I clipped the rough blue paper from the collection to the brush stroke and moved the paper until I found a bit that I liked.

“Puddles of Fun” by Amy Lemaniak
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To blend my large photo into the background of my paper, I dragged my photo onto my layout and positioned it. I then changed the Blend Mode to “Overlay.” I took one of the brushes from Brush Set: Grungelle and grunged up my photo quite a bit to make it look a bit more blended and to soften the edges.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layout
Other Ingredients:
- Font - High Tower Text

A Designers Life: Sheri Johnson |
Back to School
I have always thought children are scary. They seem to always be running around like two-pint tornadoes; touching things with sticky hands, moving much too fast, breaking and messing up whatever is in order. They have limitless energy and disturb the peace and quiet. My whole life I have resisted being around them and involving them too much in my life. Until recently I have never had much of a chance to break myself into them as I am the youngest in my family.
At the end of last school year, an opportunity came up and I reluctantly agreed to help out at a craft summer camp. The kids, true to form, were wild and out of control. They would sing at the top of their lungs, leave little strings and fabric scraps behind wherever they went, run out of the building, and hide or quarrel with each other. But before the day was lost to pent up energy and boredom, they would surround me and look at me with their curious, smiling eyes, and before long I was putty in their hands. They would beg to fix my hair and always seemed to want to be near me. They would work hard on their projects until their mercurial minds drifted away like feathers on a breeze and they would be off to cause mischief somewhere. But they had won me over completely.
When next September rolled around, I gingerly changed up my routine. I began going to several different schools as a drumming teacher’s assistant. I wasn’t sure exactly what I would be able to offer or if it was going to be something I would enjoy. At first the kids were insanely curious as to who I was, constantly peering at me and asking my name, chattering amongst themselves. The kids from last year’s summer camp were my new best friends. When they saw me they would scream my name and run to envelop me in hugs. It sort of made me feel like a celebrity.
I can’t believe I was ever afraid to work with kids. True, they can be troublesome and even downright mean at times, but when you catch them looking at you with curious eyes and you smile reassuringly and then their whole face lights up in a huge grin, you feel like you would do anything for those little ones. Sometimes it is a little bit of a challenge when they feel like goofing off in class. I’m a little shy about chastising them. But when I do say a few words they snap right up in respect.
Sometimes what I offer seems like little, clutching a roll call folder and fetching a chair for the teacher, making sure he doesn’t leave his keys and sunglasses behind, and helping to load and unload the drums out of the van. It is really more of a treat for me to be a part of the class. And I am beginning to realize kids are nothing to fear. They are little sponges with malleable minds and I am a small part of shaping their future. It is actually pretty awesome to be a part of something so important and necessary. And the rewards of having hundreds of little friends is absolutely priceless!

ScrapSimple Club Concepts |

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!
November’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandy Murry and Mandy Steward. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

Layout ideas:
-
Share stories of family heirloom sewing projects, such as handmade quilts.
-
Create a funny faux shirt tag (ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Tag Along) on the back of someone in a photo, making it appear that a clothing tag is hanging out of their shirt.
-
Using different layer Blend Modes, blend a photo onto the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Notions tags to give a look that the photo is printed on the fabric texture. Then finish off with stitched word art with Brush Set: Simple Stitch.
-
Preschool or first day of school layouts (ABC template in ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pierced).
-
Pumpkin Carving at Halloween (ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pierced)
-
Use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Crocheted Frames to frame several mini-layouts on one larger quilt-style layout.
-
Scrapbook photos of children learning to sew, using lacing cards, or learning to tie their shoes using ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pierced.
-
Use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Crocheted Frames to create digital ornaments for hanging on a Christmas tree on a layout.

Mini Tutorial - Recoloring ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Notions:
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.
I love Brandy Murry’s new Scrap Simple Embellishment Templates: Notions, and when they came out this month, there was a real buzz about them on the message boards. I noticed there were a couple of questions about how to recolour the tag, buttons, and needle, and so I am going to concentrate on that in this short tutorial.
First, open the template with the circular tag, create a duplicate of it in the photo bin by right-clicking on its image and choosing “Duplicate,” and then close the original. This way you won’t be applying any of my changes to the original file.

To begin changing colours to different elements within the template, choose the tag layer (A-Tag) by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette. Next, click Enhance> Adjust Colour> Adjust Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) and move the sliders until you have the colour and shade you want.
I recorded the numbers in the boxes next to the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness sliders so that I could apply the exact same colour to the paper overlay that goes over the needle.

Repeat these steps with the needle, button, and thread layers.

When your thread is white, you can apply a style to it. I chose Cheryl Barber’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Stitching And Holes. I chose the thread layers in the Layers Palette and clicked “Apply.”
My embellishment is complete and ready to add to my layout!

Another simple way to change the colour or look of the tag layer is by placing a patterned paper on the layer above the tag and then clipping it to the tag by clicking Layer> Group With Previous (Ctrl+G). Then you can play with the Blend Modes until the details in the bottom layer are visible and you have the look you like. Repeat the same steps with the paper overlay layer and you’ve got another great embellishment!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
