“Chaotic but Ordinary” by Caroline Kaiser

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To achieve the scratched look on the photos, I first placed the paper from Brandie Valenzuela’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Well Worn onto my layout. I selected the scratches by Ctrl+Clicking the thumbnail in the Layers Palette. Then I inverted the selection with Select> Inverse (Ctrl+Shift+I) and applied a layer mask to the first photo. Then I copied this layer mask to the other photo layers and turned off the visibility of the paper template.

This is probably one of the simplest pages I have ever done. It’s not overwhelmed with embellishments or even multiple photos. In fact, the original version I did didn’t even include a photo – I added that at the last moment. Sometimes, when you’re telling a story, I think it’s best to let the story shine. We don’t always need a ton of embellishments or even photos on a page to get our point across. And, if you’ve seen any of my pages, you know this was quite a challenge for me!

Journaling: Today marks 82 days until my due date and 94 days until Christmas. I am feeling the panic, the overwhelmingness, of everything that is to come in such a short time. I have so much to do and with Jeff leaving next week - for the next two months - I am filled with even more panic about all that I need to do without him here. Having just moved into our home not even two weeks ago, we are living among boxes - they fill every room of the house. Who would have thought that we had so much? (And had so much more before the move that we gave to charity!) Every day I go to work full-time, wondering how long I’ll be able to keep up the pace - wondering how I did it seven years ago when pregnant with Jordan. It’s true, I am older this time around, older than the typical pregnant mom-to-be, and I am sure feeling it. Today, I am so swollen I can barely walk. My body aches and I am hungry - my stomach never seeming to be satisfied. (Today it was turtle pie that I craved!) Today, Jordan had her first Brownie meeting - she is so excited to be a part of group for the first time. Next weekend is their camping trip - her first time away from me - for an entire weekend! My little girl is growing up. Today we have to go and pick up some baby stuff from my sister Tracy. We are grateful for any help we receive as we have nothing yet for the baby. It will be nice to see my sister too, if only for a few minutes. It seems there is never enough time to spend with family - these days the days just run together with task after task that needs to be done. Today, I create this scrapbook page, spending just a bit of time creating and enjoying my passion. Today, as I write this, I am reminded that I need to slow down and remember what is most important as tomorrow will be here soon enough.

I loved the layout of Brandie's new ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Calendar: CD Case Calendar Perpetual. So I opened the PSD file of the one I wanted, I duplicated the file and closed the original. Then I didn't need the month or the lines, so I deleted that layer. Then I went to Image> Image Size and changed the size to 12”x12”. ScrapSimple Layout Templates are so versatile, you can use them for anything! Just think outside the box!

Journaling: Sundays have come to be my favorite days. The whole family looks forward to them all week. After we spend a wonderful morning in church, and have all had our lunch, the fun really begins. We all gather at the Top of the Hill. We are so blessed to have such beautiful church grounds. Beautiful shade trees, green grass, a sand pile, volleyball, and plenty of black top for bikes and roller blades. Oh, and how could I forget... a great supply of bugs and lizards. It’s so wonderful for us mothers to have some adult conversation, for the daddies to relax, and for the kids and Lewis to get all their energy out. It’s getting to be that time of year again, when the weather is beautiful. I am so thankful for our relaxing Sunday afternoons, they make Monday mornings not so bad!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the papers from the Frolic Collection Biggie look a little tattered, I used the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Well Worn Number 5, colored it white, and put it over top of all the colored paper layers. One way I like to recolor paper templates is to create a Solid Color Adjustment Layer above the paper template layer. Ctrl+Alt+G “clips” the color layer to the paper template. Now I can double click on the layer thumbnail of the color adjustment layer (which opens the color picker window) and click around on different colors to see what they look like. When I am satisfied with my choice, I merge the color adjustment layer with the paper layer (Ctrl+E).

A Designers Life: Keri Schueller |
Being a Parent Means...
I have been told plenty of times in my life that being a parent is quite possibly the hardest job I’d ever have. It is one of those things you hear and understand but don’t really “get” until you do it yourself. There is no way to understand what it actually looks like until you are in the middle of it.
I learn so much about myself and grow in so many ways by being responsible for other human beings. I am challenged daily to look at myself and all of the ways that I still have growing up to do right along with my children. It is beautiful and painful all at the same time, but I am learning to trust in the process.
-
I’ve learned that being a parent means you can no longer eat junk food at any point during the day because you’ll have to explain why you can and they can’t.
-
I’ve learned that after you have children, there is no such thing as being bored anymore.
-
I’ve learned that if I want my child to remain calm, I have to do the same and that much of how my child responds is a lesson learned from me.
-
I’ve learned that disciplining my child because of my own agendas doesn’t go over very well and it isn’t the point.
-
I’ve learned that sleep is a distant memory once children come into your life but that I can actually survive on much less than I thought.
-
I’ve learned that no matter how much I want to keep my child from being hurt in any way, I can’t, and my daughters will be heartbroken at times in their lives. That is a tough one.
-
I’ve learned that if I give my children an inch, they’ll take a mile, so I have to mean what I say.
-
I’ve learned that being consistent is not as easy as it sounds.
-
I’ve learned that I must be disciplined in order to discipline my children.
-
I’ve learned that seeing a smile on my child’s face makes for some of the happiest moments of my life.
-
I’ve learned that success and possessions really don’t mean anything and that true love is the biggest blessing of all.
-
I’ve learned that sometimes letting go is the best way to love someone.
-
I’ve learned that I’m stronger than I thought I was and that children are too.
-
I’ve learned that being a parent means laughing and crying all in the same moments.
-
I’ve learned that being a parent means witnessing God’s masterpiece unfold before my eyes and that there is no greater gift on earth.
- Keri

Layout and Iron-On Project by Julie Moberly

Mini Tutorial - Using ScrapSimple Products with Iron-On Transfers:
Unknown to each of us, Julie Moberly and I had the exact same idea for a wonderful way to use this month’s ScrapSimple Products. We created unique and personalized iron-on transfers to be used on clothing. Great minds think alike, huh? This entire project took me less than one hour to complete.
I chose to create a design for a newborn onesie. I purchased a package of iron-on transfer paper for inkjet printers at my local craft store. I chose one for use with light colored, soft, stretchable fabrics. (There are several varieties available for different fabric types and colors.)
I created a design for both the front and the back of the onesie using two documents 6” wide x 3” tall with a dpi setting of 300. As I completed each design, I merged all the layers. If text is included in your design, you will need to reverse your image by using Image> Rotate Canvas> Flip Horizontal. Here is an example of the front before I flipped the image.
Next, I moved both designs onto a new document (8.5” wide x 11” inches tall, 300 dpi) that was the size of my transfer paper. I moved them close together to conserve transfer paper for future projects. Then, I simply printed the design on the transfer paper using my inkjet printer. It is important to wait 30 minutes before continuing to allow the ink to dry thoroughly.
After cutting out the designs, I used a hot iron on a dry setting to adhere them to the onesie. Iron on a flat surface covered with a clean, wrinkle-free cloth (I used a pillow case over my kitchen counter). To achieve a matte finish, the directions called for peeling off the paper immediately. Allow the transfer paper to cool thoroughly before removing if you desire a glossy look. I couldn’t help but “oooh” and “ahhh” when I saw the completed onesie. How cute is this for a baby girl?

Mastering Brushes for Photoshop
Tuesdays, November 11 - December 16 - 7:00PM ET
This in-depth class is perfect for the digital scrapbooker who wants to take their brushwork above and beyond the basics taught in the Secrets tutorials. Beautiful brush skills taught in this class will turn ordinary layouts into the extraordinary!
Important: This Intermediate Level class is for Adobe Photoshop users. Students are required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
