“No More Pictures!” by Janine Buckles
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I added a piece of tape from Shalae’s Extra – Tape Embellishment over the top of the black and white circular frame, but it was solid and didn’t match the look of the pieces of tape on the cardboard papers. In order to make it look similar, I selected the tape layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette. Then I clicked the arrow next to Opacity (at the top of the Layers Palette) and moved the slider until the tape looked the way I wanted it. It was a simple technique, but it made a big difference and kept the look of the different tape pieces consistent.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layouts
Other Ingredients:
- Font - Marydale
- Font - Problem Secretary
- Font - Problem Secretary Normal
Journaling: You were so patient whenever I got out my camera, but when you'd had enough you sure let me know! When you started to make these faces I knew it was time to find something else to do. It was just so hard because all I wanted to do was look at you.

“Little Hands” by Julie Moberly
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to make the journaling appear to be printed on the ribbon, I changed the Blend Mode of the text to “Linear Light.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layouts
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: Little hands, left & right, dabble & stroke colorful paints. Delicately, yet deliberately, they manipulate brushes, swabs, and sponges. Dipping & dripping, swirling & patting colorful paints. Little hands create big art.

“A is for Alexander” by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the acrylic bubble look over the smaller photos of Alexander, I duplicated each photo. Then, I gave each of those duplicated photo layers Mandy Steward’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Acrylic Bubbles 1801. Finally, I merged each photo with its “twin” to minimize the number of photo layers on my layout.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layouts

“You Are So Alive” by Armi Custodio
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The acrylic elements in my layout were done with different Blend Modes. For the alphas from Mandy Steward’s Overlayed Collection, I used “Linear Dodge,” the round frames, also from the same collection, “Vivid Light,” and Ariadna Wiczling’s swirl from her Acrylic Love Embellishments , at “Normal.” For all acrylics, I used Theresa Kavouras’ ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Shadowing Transparent Objects 5301. It really takes out the guesswork when you need to apply shadows to acrylics and other translucent embellishments.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layouts
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: I’m not biased. Everyone says so, even total strangers at the checkout line. You just exude life in everything you say and do. You are drawn to people, and people are drawn to you. This is a gift. I know you will use it well.

“Fresh” by Kelly Favor-Chronister
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
When I saw Mandy Steward’s Overlayed Collection in the boutique, I knew I had to have it. I played with it some, but I stumbled across a thread on the Scrap Girl’s message board with lots of great ideas and was totally inspired!
I experimented with the embellishments, applying different layer styles and Blend Modes to them, but I ultimately liked the look of Cheryl Barber’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glass Clear Super Biggie 4102. To get the look on the alpha and the date tag, I duplicated each layer and applied the style to the top layer. This allowed me to get the beveled look of the glass and yet still keep the black grungy look of the original embellishments.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Two-Page Layouts

A Designers Life: Erica Hite |
Adjusting to This New Life
No one ever said it was going to be easy. But still, I was not prepared at all for how my life would change.
Remember in May, in my last Designer's Life, where I had this idea that I would be sitting at my computer, working on new designs, with my newborn baby snoozing in a sling on my chest? Well, OK, I barely remember I wrote that. But, anyway, what nonsense. At least in my case. Would you believe that instead of that peaceful scenario, the reality was putting my son in a sling while sitting and bouncing on a really big exercise ball, attempting to get my reluctant napper to sleep, while trying to control my pen on my Wacom tablet? Or, soon after, hearing the sound of explosive poop (Shoot, I promised myself I would not go there in my story!) and having to get up to change a diaper? And then, to start the process over again, but having to get up yet again because of the loud whining and the need to get my son to nap some other way.
Nothing anyone could have said would have gotten me ready for motherhood. The broken, sleepless nights, the feeling that nothing is getting accomplished, the desire to do something creative festering under my skin without the time to relieve it. I have to keep telling myself that I'm still the same person, even though my responsibilities have changed. I am now a mother, forever, as long as I'm still breathing. A new love has blossomed in my heart where I didn't realize there was room for something like this.
In the beginning, after my son's birth, I had so many doubts. At first, I'm embarrassed to admit, I regretted having a child. I know it was the exhaustion talking, the sleep deprivation, but, for a minute, I wanted to be able to hit undo, rewind. I didn't feel ready or prepared for this. It was such a shock to my system.
I'm a fairly independent person. You could even call me a loner. Not that I'm alone much, but that I am very introspective and like time to myself every day. Now, I've needed to rearrange my life and my thinking to revolve around someone who needs me and is practically attached to me almost 24/7... a high-needs baby who cannot handle being put down or out of my arms for very long. I am a stay-at-home mom now. Is this who I am - what defines me now? I tell myself that this is my situation, my responsibility and my role, but that I am still the same person. My life might have been tossed into upheaval, like the yanking of a tablecloth underneath a nicely set table setting, but this is just the beginning of something new. A new life. A new perspective.
For the time being, my life will revolve around one thing (or one person)... my son.
Maybe, I have a baby like mine so that I slow down and enjoy life. I used to be so caught up with working that I'd work 15 hours a day or more. I love to work. But, life often requires compromises and now I need to juggle my son's needs with my own.
My mom admitted to me, after I had my son, why she never pressured me to have children. She knows how hard it is and didn't wish on me all of the challenges unless it was something I really wanted to go forward with. But, she always used to say and still does, that I was the best thing she ever did. Now I feel the same way about my son. He's the best thing I've ever done, hands down. No matter how difficult things may seem or are, there's no greater love than how a mother feels about her children. Watching them grow and develop is sometimes surreal.
I still always feel though, the ever-present desire to design non-stop. It is a challenge to fight that feeling off (with a giant mental baseball bat) as I care for my son during the day. Somehow, I get things done and there's room for everything that I need in my life: my son, my husband, and my creative pursuits. Oh, and myself, as well.
Right now, my son is sitting on my lap with a string of colorful links while I'm finishing up this story. Even though this isn't how I pictured sitting at my computer and working, nothing beats his warm, snuggly body on a cold morning, the sweet smell of his clean noggin, or when he looks up at my face and smiles at me.
- Erica

Favorite product I've designed:
Bouncing Baby Boy Collection

I designed this kit just before I had my son, Lucian. I created the art thinking of him and knew I wanted something hand drawn and brightly colored. Knowing his personality more now, it suits him well.

Make and print a round greeting card (using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Pen and Ink).
-

A basic understanding includes knowing what a brush is, as well as how to load and use them in the basic way of stamping. The class does not address these basic topics. You will also need to own a variety of brushes to use in this class.

Slice It Up! Fun Ways With Mosaics
Mondays, November 17 and 24 - 1:00PM ET
This in-depth class on creating mosaics is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to add a little spice to your digital scrapbooking layouts, slicing specific areas, or the whole image. This step by step instruction will show you how to use techniques such as Layer via Copy, the Slice Tool and Layer Masks to achieve this effect. We will add Layer Styles including drop shadows and strokes to the slices to make our slices stand out.
Important: This Intermediate Level class is for Adobe Photoshop users, versions CS and up only. Students are required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!
Enrolling in this course without understanding these basic skills may cause you to feel lost and frustrated when you attend the classes. We want you to have a great experience. So please, if you are uncertain that you have enough skills to take this course, use the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program to build an adequate foundation prior to the classes starting. Thanks! |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
