Scrap Girls Event - Digital Scrapbook Day!

Happy Digital Scrapbook Day! Scrap Girls is celebrating this fun holiday with a great lineup of chats and classes, prizes and fun, just for you! Come hang out with us today and celebrate our wonderful hobby together!

---

Here is the schedule for the day:

  • 12:00Noon ET - Color Challenge Chat - Pat
Join Pat (PBarnes) for a Color Challenge and Chat at 12 Noon ET. I will post the colors a few hours before the chat so you can get started on a layout if you wish. We'll do some scrapping, some talking about the use of color, and some just plain chatting. I hope you can join me in the Live Chat Room!

  • 1:00PM ET – Word Challenge Chat - April & Michelle
Join April Showers and Shelbi in the Chat Room at 1:00 ET for some chatting and Word Challenge Fun!

  • 3:00PM ET - Mini Class: Rounded Corners - Anna
When I was a paper scrapbooker, one of my favorite tools was my corner punch. You'd stick the paper in, press the button, and voila! - rounded corners. Unfortunately, Photoshop Elements doesn't have a corner punch, so rounding those corners isn't quite that easy. Or is it? Join me, Anna Mansfield, for a mini class that will teach you a quick, simple method for getting perfectly rounded corners. Software specific - PSE

  • 7:00PM ET - Layout Do-Over Chat - Jo & Becca
We all have them - those layouts that just seem to sit on our hard drives unfinished or just not quite right. Maybe you've gone back to this particular page several times without satisfaction. Well, now is the time to try again! Join Jo (scrappingjo) from our Layout Artist Team and Becca from our Welcoming Committee for some helpful hints on revitalizing a drab layout. Meet us in the Lobby at 7:00pm ET with your choice of layout and an open mind to some new ideas! It's time to make that layout SHINE!

  • 8:00PM ET - “Celebrate What Digi-Scrap Means to You” Chat - Zaz & Sherry
It's time to celebrate Digital Scrapbooking Day "Scrap Girls" style! Join Carol Ann (Zaz) and Sherry Lynn at 8pm ET in the lobby to celebrate what we love about digital scrapbooking and how it has enhanced our lives. And of course, there'll be plenty of cyber chocolate and other treats to share as well! It'll be a night of fun and friendship - see you there!

Note: While every effort will be made to adhere to this schedule, details are subject to change.

Customer Muse: Why I Scrapbook

Recently, I started printing a lot of my scrapbook pages. I found this great box album for a great deal - it's fabric covered and has two big rings inside to hold the pages in protective sleeves. Printing my pages is new for me, so I wasn't quite sure what they would look like on paper. I started printing the earliest pages I had done, resisting the urge to re-do many of them as I now have better supplies and (I hope!) better skills. I didn't realize that printing my pages would cause me to have an epiphany of sorts about why I scrapbook.

I was excited as I picked up the first batch of printed pages. I couldn't wait to see them and, as soon as I could, I started organizing and putting them in the page protectors in the album.

My scrapbooking has almost always been about my daughter, and this album was going to be dedicated to her first few years. (However many I can squeeze into that box.) It was so nice to see her growing up on paper - from newborn to toddler. There were pages that captured a particular memory or milestone in her growth, other pages displayed a sweet picture with a loving quote or poem.

As I was looking at my album-in-progress, I started to think about the question we scrapbookers get asked all of the time. Why do you scrapbook? My response to this has always been along the lines of “to record my daughter's childhood and create lasting memories.” But, to be honest, I never really gave it a lot of serious thought.

As I was looking through these pages, I started asking myself, what if I DIDN'T scrapbook? What if I didn't have all of these pages created, preserving her childhood events? Would I still remember what she was like at four months? Would I still remember the details of one of her first tantrums? Would I remember what first solid foods she liked to eat, what some of her first words were? Maybe I would remember some of those details, but I know for sure that if I didn't have the memories preserved on a scrapbook page, the details would be vague and continue to fade with time.

I was also hit with the realization that if I didn't do scrapbooking, I wouldn't have all of these pictures. Sure, I'd still have lots of pictures, but I wouldn't have most of the shots I have. I've always taken lots of pictures of my daughter, but since starting to scrapbook, whenever I have the camera out, I'm thinking, “what is the best kind of shot to get here to put on a scrapbook page?” Or, I see pages in online galleries with certain shots and think, “I have to get a shot like that for a page!”

Scrapbooking started as a nice hobby, when my daughter was just a baby and I had lots of time on my hands while she napped. But, it has become so much more. This album - and others that I will create - will record my daughter's childhood and our life together like nothing else could. The often forgotten details of childhood will be recorded in these pages for her when she's older and will be a great reminder for me as well.

University Updates: Digital Photography Simplified

For six weeks this fall, 25 Scrap Girls embarked on a journey to improve their photography skills. The main class resource was the wonderful eBook, Digital Photography Simplified, by our own dinny [Diane Miller]. The material in the book was enhanced with weekly emails of supporting materials and photo assignments.

Participants were encouraged to create a portfolio of photos, either as a reference or as a showcase for their work. The learning process included improved knowledge of camera function and analysis of photo results. Through a combination of lots of shooting practice and constructive critique, class members developed their skills and demonstrated learning.

The class gallery included some incredible images and layouts. These are just a few examples from class members.

Joyce created a reference portfolio with a different background for assignments from each section. Her clear descriptions will make a great resource. This study effectively shows the use of cropping with the camera (rather than in the software) to focus attention on the highlighted section of the subject.

On this page, Karen presents an excellent example of a showcase portfolio page. The simple, elegant layout draws focus directly to this dramatic shot of the frost on the yellow flowers. The blurred background (shallow depth of field) helps to make the flowers pop.

As I write this, the class is still in process. The improvement shown in the gallery to date has been impressive. I can’t wait to see what the remaining days will bring! It has been fun to see the personal takes on the assignments and to share new ideas as we all strive to become better photographers. Happy shooting.

  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.
