“Got Candy?” by Stefanie Harris
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I don’t really have any “classic” Halloween pictures – scary costumes, etc. – so I decided to focus on the relationship between my daughters for this layout. I still used a photo from last Halloween, when everyone was gearing up to go trick-or-treating, but I decided to alter a piece of Word Art from Erica’s Bump in the Night Collection to support my theme. Using a blank tab from the same collection, along with a couple of staples, I typed the word “sister” onto the tab and covered the word “tooth” in the original Word Art. This way, I was able to make my point, and still have a layout themed for Halloween.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I blended the photo into the paper by setting the Blend Mode of the photo layer to “Darken.” Then I selected the Eraser and loaded Brandie Valenzuela’s Brush Set: Well Worn to erase the hard edges of the photo.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the moon of Erica Hite’s Bump in the Night Collection to be a little more orange. With the Magic Wand (Tolerance 20, Contiguous unchecked), I selected the light cream color of the moon. I used Image> Adjustments> Hue and Saturation and Variations to colorize it in light orange. Then I used the Magic Wand to select the scratches on the moon, right-clicked with my mouse, chose “Layer via Copy” and applied Cheryl Barber’s style Glitter Brights on the new layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Wickedly Cute” by Kelly Favor-Chronister

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get a more cohesive look with the photo and Erica Hite’s Bump In the Night Collection, I selected my daughter’s shirt (which was originally a coral-pink) using the Magnetic Lasso. Then I made the selection into a new layer using Cmd+J (Ctrl+J on a PC or you can go to Layer> New Layer> Layer via Copy). Then I placed the solid blue paper from the collection over the shirt layer and grouped them together using a clipping mask and changed the Blend Mode of the paper layer to “Color.” Viola! Now I have a blue shirt that will accent the collection I chose for my layout perfectly!
The big question is... did I really paint her green and pink or is it a digital scrapbooking trick?
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Halloween
Journaling: What? What are you all looking at? Oh, do I have something in my teeth? Alright, let's get this over with! No I'm not seasick, yes I've always been green, and no I did not eat grass as a child! - From Wicked

“Boo” by Kara Swanson

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I clustered the elements and black paper around the photo to draw the viewer's focus to it, and then allowed for white space for the same effect.

A Designers Life: dinny [Diane Miller] |
BAD Habits
I have some BAD habits.
I know that I should do something about it, but I just can't help it. I keep on doing it and saying, "It’s not that bad." Well, now it's become critical.
The 160 GB partition of my hard drive has only MBs available and iPhoto won't let me empty my 2GB Compact Flash into it.
My first bad habit... I take TOO many photos! It all started innocently enough when I bought my first digital camera. I took a few photos and they were medium quality. They didn't take up much room on my hard drive, so I wouldn't delete any of them, unless they were REALLY bad.
Fast forward a few years and now my camera can shoot RAW. At first, I stuck with JPG, but once I started shooting RAW, I haven't looked back. I love the flexibility of shooting RAW. It allows me to be lazy sometimes and not set the correct white balance or know that I can fix almost anything later. Since I know that I can fix almost any photo, I rarely delete images. Now, I keep shooting and shooting and saving these really large files.
Second bad habit... I am the worst at printing out any of my photos. If I would just print them out, I could archive them and have room for more. Yeah, right. Since I'm shooting RAW, I want to process them before sending them to be printed and I just never get to it because I keep shooting and don't have time to process them and print them out.
There is something to be said about those old film days when you couldn't take any more photos until you finished a roll of film. When I got the prints back, I just settled for the less than perfect photo.
That leads me to my third bad habit... I am a perfectionist, now that I can be.
I spend WAY too much time adjusting a photo. I think I enjoy that even more than taking the shot!
I do have one good habit... I process my RAW files when I'm scrapping. When working with RAW files, I can process one image and apply the settings to the other photos used in that layout. This way, all of the photos have a consistent look. It also speeds up processing... and I like that.
Are all of these advances in technology any good for us? I think in the long run they are. I never would have scrapped if I couldn't do it digitally.
UPDATED:
I'm saved. A new 650 GB internal hard drive just arrived. I'm planning for that to be exclusively for my photos! Hmmmm... I wonder how soon before I fill that one up! I still have room for three more internal hard drives!
- dinny

Favorite product I've designed:
Natural Collection Biggie

I tend to pull items frequently from this collection because of their neutral colors. (I find they go with lots of other colors.)

Scrap Girls Club Concepts |

The Scrap Girls Monthly Club allows you to get all of the newest looks
while saving money! It is perfect for anyone who wants beautiful, coordinated
digital scrapbooking supplies that are easy to use. You get all the
products shown above, a $29.33 value, for $9.99 or less! Plus, each
month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the
fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get
your creativity going!
October’s Scrap
Girls Club’s featured designer is Shalae Tippetts.
This digital scrapbooking collection has the rich earthy colors of autumn as well as the homemade atmosphere of your grandma's home. With homemade stitching, embroidery, ruffles and aged textures, you can create some beautiful digital layouts showcasing your fall, home, relationship, or heritage photos. Let’s look
a little closer and see what additional ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:
- Telling the story about an old house you, your family, or your ancestors lived in.
- Family Reunion
- Cheerleader layouts (using ruffles from Hearth Collection Biggie)
- Layout about a homemade entry, like sewing items, to a fair.
- Favorite fall home-baked goodies (pies, bread, etc.)
- Photos of old buildings, houses, or barns
- Trips to the pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or harvest/fall festival
- Family posed photos, especially with fall color outfits
- Hiking
- Create a view from a window, using ruffled border (Hearth Collection Biggie) as a window valance. (Particularly great with products like ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Windows or ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Windowpane Frames.)

Congratulations, mtorres_usa! We loved your idea so much we had to share it with everybody! Please contact [email protected] to claim your gift.

Project/Printable ideas:
- Use Hearth Embellishment Mini to create mini album or poster to hang in your home for a little one to help learn different shapes.
- Use the Hearth Collection Biggie alpha to make a “girlie” alphabet book. It would also be perfect for making a personalized story book.
- Create labels to decorate herb jars.
- Print onto fabric and put over the top of jams to give as gifts.
- Make kitchen helper magnets with equivalents, measurements, substitutions, etc.
- Decorate an old-fashioned clock.
- Design “This Book Belongs To:” type labels; print and adhere inside the cover of your books.
- Use the products to create your own sewing-themed labels for gifts.
- Create a cute to-do list.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
