“Party Time” by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
With the challenge of using three different papers from three different collections, I had the idea to use the papers in strips and squares. I used the Rectangle Marquee Tool to create all the squares, filled them in color with the Paint Bucket, each square being on a separate layer. As soon as I was satisfied with the position of the squares, I placed my pictures and the papers I wanted to use on the layout and clipped them to the different squares with Ctrl+Alt+G.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections

“Perfection” by Pat Bowman

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The photo effect was easy to achieve by clipping my photo to the photo mask in the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Layered: Fanciful Masks. Then I took it a step further and applied one of the styles from the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Photo Masks 6401 to add the depth.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Dinner @ Grandmom’s” by Kim Meeder
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I loved the acrylic look of the alphas in Adriana’s Acrylic Love Collection, but I wanted my title to be a little more noticeable. First, I merged the alphas spelling “dinner” into one layer. Next, I placed a solid orange paper under the merged layer. I selected the clear acrylic part of the alphas using my Magic Wand Tool, chose “Inverse,” and deleted the selection on my orange paper layer. Finally, I adjusted the paper layer’s transparency setting to 20% to obtain the acrylic look again.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections
Other Ingredients:
- Font - Apple Chancery
- Font - Futura
Journaling: Dinner at our house always includes dessert: cookies, ice cream, cupcakes, chocolate milk, animal crackers, and anything else that puts a smile on your face. I just love it when you run up to me and ask for a “special treat.” And, I almost always say, “Yes,” ‘cuz you are my special treat!

“Beautiful” by Kelly Favor-Chronister
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the rectangular word brush fit the warped frame, I used the Skew function to pull the corners to fit into the frame. You can quickly access the skew tool via the Transform Tool. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T or Cmd+T on a Mac. Then when the transform menu comes up, hold down the Control or Command key while dragging the corner of the object.

“Gampa” by Amy Lemaniak
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I took the cardboard looking paper from Angie Briggs’ His & Hers Collection Biggie and dragged it onto my layout. Then, I took one of Jan Hicks’ Scrap Simple Embellishment Templates: Cardboard Curled Edges and also dragged it onto my layout. I colored it by adjusting the Hue/Saturation/Lightness (Ctrl+U) until it matched the paper, then I positioned it in the upper right corner of my layout. With my Cardboard Curl layer active, I used my Magic Wand Tool and selected the portion of paper on the side of my Cardboard Curl that I wanted to keep. I inverted by selection (Ctrl+Shift+I), selected the Paper layer to be active, and then deleted the part of the paper on the opposite side of the curl.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections

Life Muses by Ro: Boutique Poetry |
During our Anniversary Week, we played a version of Scrap Girls Feud, where team members were asked to respond to a number of questions. One of those questions was, “Name a Scrap Girl's favorite day of the week.” Of course, the most popular answer was THURSDAY!
Why Thursday? It's when most of our new products for the week are released into the store. This day is so anticipated, we even have members who start threads on our message board on Thursday mornings to talk about all the new goodies they will find! Yesterday, Charlene was missed so much that sweetaudrey composed this poem for her:
Where, oh where could our Charlene have gone?
Oh where, oh where can she be?
Is her shopping cart too full?
Is her Paypal all gone?
Oh where, oh where can she be?
The excitement is contagious, and we've had a few other poems expressing excitement, like this one from Conda (SodScrap):
Oh where, oh where are the new items?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
With their colors so bright and the fun new themes,
Oh where, oh where can they be?
And this gem from Janine (J9Buckles):
Twas the night before Thursday and all through the land
Not a Scrap Girl was sleeping, credit cards were in hand
Their husbands were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of creditors danced in their heads
With a click of a button, a refresh of a screen
All eyes were on goodies, arriving on scene!
The sun on the monitor provides a pretty glow
For "oohing" and "aahing" as through the boutique they go
On VISA, on MasterCard, on PayPal they cry
Through the brushes and actions and templates they fly!
And then, in a twinkling, they spend their last dime
And head off to download for a good hour's time
They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work
And filled all their hard drives, then turn with a smirk
They ran for their cameras and their children got wise
Knowing their mom wanted to use her new supplies
As they left the boutique, as they turned out the light
We heard them exclaim as they walked out of sight
Happy Scrapping to all.... see you next Wednesday night!
Thanks, ladies, for your wit and excitement in giving us all a good laugh!

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Creating Textures |
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 with Windows Vista.
One of the things I love is the look of embossed papers. In the Scrap Girls store, we have several texture sets that can be used on your digital scrapbooking pages to give the look of embossed papers. They can be found here: http://store.scrapgirls.com/category/47/Textures. Another way to create this look is to use any of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates.

First, open your paper template and save it as a PSD file. I am using one from Erica’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Bump in the Night.

Next, open the paper that you want to emboss and choose Filter> Texture> Texturizer.

Another box will open. Choose the small arrow next to “Texture” and then “Load Texture.” You will then find where you saved your paper template as a PSD file. Choose that file and click “Open.”
Once you load your texture, experiment with the Lighting and Relief. By choosing different directions and sizes it will give you completely different looks.

After you have made all of the changes that you would like, click “OK,” and you will see that your paper has an embossed look. If you are not happy with the results (maybe it’s not embossed enough or you’ve chosen too high of a relief) click Ctrl+Z and it will remove the embossing and you’ll be able to start over.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you. |
