“You Bring Joy” by Kara Swanson

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Since most of the layout is neutral in color, I chose to edit the photo to fit into this color scheme. I used Melissa Renfro’s Photo Basics for PSE and chose the “Chocolate” action. It was perfect for what I wanted!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To re-color Ariadna’s Gaia Alpha, first I rasterized the layer. Then, using the Eyedropper Tool, I chose the color I wanted the alphas to be. I then hit Ctrl+U (or Image> Adjustment> Hue/Saturation) and clicked on the ‘colorise’ box. This automatically changed the color of the alpha to something close, but not quite, what I wanted.
To get the color to be closer to my chosen color, I played with the sliders until I got as close to the color as possible. I then clicked “OK.” I was not quite satisfied with the depth of the color, so I duplicated the layer, clicked Ctrl+U to go back to the Hue/Saturation menu and only played with the ‘lighter/darker’ slider until I was satisfied. By doing this, I did not lose any of the alpha’s texture; I just made the color slightly darker. Once I was satisfied, I merged the two layers together. I then repeated this process with all the letters until complete.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Often, when a collection has a lot of great elements and I just can’t decide which to use, I love to layer lots of items on my pages. I did that here with all of the flowers and leaves. I just grab as many as I like for my page and then just start layering them one by one. This often involves rotating them or tucking them beneath a paper or another element so just a peek of the item shows. I also make sure to adjust the drop shadows as necessary to show extra depth for the elements on top.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS

“Crazy 4 Scruffie” by Christy VanderWall

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get the “Forever” barcode (originally black and white) to coordinate with the rest of the brown/dingy feel of the layout, I copied and pasted a small section of the background paper to a layer above the barcode, applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt+G) to cover only the tag, and changed the Blend Mode to “Linear Burn.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections

“‘Fravourite’ Things” by Janine Buckles
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I used Ariadna’s Brush Set: Little Zoo - Tiger & Monkey to create a pattern on the paper along the top of the layout. This tied in with the little monkey I stamped on the journal paper. To add depth, I applied Mandy Steward’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Embed 1801 to the Tiger & Monkey brush layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections
Other Ingredients:

Journaling: Evan,
When I made this little fleece jacket for you, I had no idea it would soon become your “fravourite” thing to wear outside. Like everything else, you grew out of it way too fast.

“Best Friends” by Launa Valente
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I loved the shape of the ribbon “leaves” under the rose, but the color just wasn't right. So, I found a cute paper from the Acrylic Love Collection and used a clipping mask to clip it to the ribbon. Finally, I used the “Hard Light” Blend Mode to bring out the texture of the ribbon underneath it. Perfect!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Use Three Papers from Three Collections

A Designers Life: Angela Blanchard |
A Helmet in the Dishwasher?
I love hobbies and I have several of them. Besides digital scrapbooking, I love to garden, read mysteries, make dollhouse miniatures, quilt, draw, etc. But I never realized, until about a year ago, how much our hobbies affect our spouses. That was the year my husband bought a BMW motorcycle and life has never been the same.
First, I learned that you can’t have just one motorcycle. You have to have a different motorcycle for every occasion (the same excuse that we ladies use for shoes). Then, beware, because after you have two motorcycles in the garage, they begin breeding and, before you know it, there are little Honda Trail 70’s joining your family. However, I didn’t pay too much attention to this at the time. I mean, it’s his hobby and he was really enjoying himself, so I was happy.
Then, he started going on fun, scenic rides and taking great pictures and of course when I saw that, I wanted to go along. So, I found myself down at the local motorcycle shop being fitted for a helmet... and, of course, gloves... and a jacket, too. Plus, those really flattering pants that make you waddle like the “Pop-n-Fresh Dough Boy,” but really do keep you warm. I still didn’t think I was getting into the motorcycle culture. I mean, I was just getting the gear so I could go picture-taking with my husband. That’s all.
I started to get an inkling that his hobby was really spilling over into my life when I suggested that if he wanted to host one of the local motorcycle club meetings at our house one evening, I would be happy to handle the food. So, after one crock pot of chili, two pans of cornbread, one huge bowl of potato salad and two large pizzas were cleaned up by about 20 guys, things were beginning to dawn on me.
Since then, we’ve gone to the regional motorcycle club meet up near Cathlamet, WA, and done a few rides to the Oregon coast. Plus, I can’t forget to mention the ride to Mt. St. Helen’s where we went on the helicopter tour. (The pilot was also a motorcycle rider.)
But, it all finally hit home last week when I walked into the kitchen to find the dishwasher running. At first I thought, “How sweet, someone emptied and refilled the dishwasher!” But, the dirty dishes were still in the sink, so that couldn’t be right. I decided to ignore it for the time being and went about my chores.
Finally, the cycle ended and I opened the dishwasher door. At first, I thought it had been run empty because I couldn’t see anything. But, as I pulled out the bottom rack, there it was... my husband’s motorcycle helmet - all steaming and shiny! (How was I to know that this was the recommended way to wash a helmet?) The sight of it there was just so hilarious that it all finally hit home. Motorcycles are now a part of my life! His hobby has gradually oozed its way into so many areas of my life!
But, you know what? It’s OK. My husband was taking a photo just the other week and said, “Hey, this would make a great scrapbook paper!”

Favorite product I've designed:
Feathered Friends Collection

I love birds and I love watching their antics from my office window. Drawing the illustrations for this collection was a blast! The hardest part was deciding which birds to include!

Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
