“Spooky Parade” by Kim Meeder
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To achieve the film negative walkway, I linked together all layers containing pieces of the film negative within my digital layout template. Next, I used Edit> Transform and played with the Skew, Perspective, and Distort options until I was happy with the results. Finally, I clipped papers to each of the layers. I now had a “sidewalk” for my spooky trick-or-treaters to parade down!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Halloween

“Pumpkin Patch Fun” by Jennifer Labre

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Creating titles are often one of my most challenging aspects when creating my layout. Lucky for us, many of the Scrap Girls Collections offer alphabets and word art that make creating titles much simpler. Here, I used the ready made word art “Pumpkin Patch” and made the title my own by using the alpha from the same collection to add the word “Fun.” Now I have my own unique title that couldn’t have been simpler to create!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS
Name of challenge: Halloween

“Dress Ups” by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To brush Erica Hite’s Dynamic Brush Set: Frayed 5401 onto the inner frame of Syndee Nuckles’ ScrapSimple Paper Templates: On Edge, I used Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It 5001 to “trace” the inner line exactly. I followed all the prompts given throughout the action, choosing the brush I wanted, and the final result is as you see it here. The Dynamic Brush Set: Frayed 5401 wraps itself around the inner frame of the paper template. I then added Amanda Sok’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Micro Glitter 6401 Super Biggie for the final touches.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Wardrobe Malfunction” by Armi Custodio
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
When I scrap Halloween pictures, I always have a dilemma because Halloween papers and embellishments are in vivid colors and usually clash with my equally vivid photos. One solution is to convert photos to black and white or sepia. For this layout however, I wanted to keep my photos in color. To “tone down” the bright colors in my photo, I duplicated my photo and set its Blend Mode to “Linear Light” at 40% Opacity and applied Mandy Steward’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Distressed Photo Sepia 1801 Mini. Try it!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Halloween
Other Ingredients:

“First Halloween” by Janine Buckles
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
After I finished this layout, I realized I wanted to use something to connect my images and journaling; something to accentuate the “before and after” theme. The arrow I chose was a soft blue, so I selected it by clicking on its thumbnail image in my Layers Palette. Next I used my Magic Wand and, with “Contiguous” unchecked and the Tolerance set to 40, selected the blue area. Now I had marching ants around the just the blue area.
I then altered the blue by clicking on Enhance> Adjust Colour> Adjust Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U), and with the “Colorize” box checked, I moved the sliders until I had a shade of blue that coordinated with the dots on the background paper. I repeated this technique with the tan outline on the arrow so that it also matched the outlines on the polka-dot paper. Now my layout felt finished! But then, with digital, is a layout ever finished?
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Halloween
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: Andrew, you weren’t even three years old and yet, you were so excited to be going out “trick or treating” for the very first time. I made clown costumes for you and your sister and off you went. You barely made it around the neighbourhood before you got tired. We got home and off came the costume, but before I got your sister’s costume off, you had fallen asleep, leaning over the couch. I couldn’t resist capturing the moment!

“My Little Pumpkin” by Amy Lemaniak

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I took a frame from Syndee Nuckles’ Abracadabra Collection Mini and put it on the layer above my photo. With the frame layer active, I selected my Magnetic Lasso Tool and went around the inner portion of the frame to select the area inside the frame. I then inverted my selection and selected my photo layer. Finally, I deleted my selection and the frame fit perfectly around my photo.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Life Muses by Ro: What is Happiness? |
Note from Ro: I found this little essay on my blog today. I completely forgot about it. It made me smile. I thought I’d share it with you.

“Happiness isn't something you experience; it's something you remember.”
- Oscar Levant

What do you remember when you see this photo of a fire? I remember...
-
S'mores (roasted marshmallows and Hershey's chocolate bars sandwiched between two graham crackers)
-
Cooking hot dogs on a wire hanger
-
Singing the round, “Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose... Where shall we see thee lie?” around a campfire with my friends
-
Looking at the darkest night skies filled with the brightest stars
-
Playing Flicker with flashlights (Everyone stands in a circle and shines their flashlights into the middle of the area, where a person is dancing wildly. Because the flashlights are being moved about really fast as this is done, the dancer looks like they are in a silent movie. It's hysterical.)
-
Sitting outside with my husband staring at our fire pit which causes me to remember being in the mountains with my friends eating s'mores, singing rounds and playing Flicker.
What memories make you happy?
- Ro

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Create Your Own Alpha by Recoloring ScrapSimple Alpha Templates |
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.
It’s really easy to create your own alpha characters by recoloring the ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Varsity Letters.
In this particular digital scrapbooking alpha template, there are several options to create the layered letters. Since I will be using several letters, I have chosen to layer the sheets of letters. Another option is to open each individual PSD file. It just depends on your personal preference and desired outcome.

First, begin by opening up the first layer of the alphas. Start with the file: “AMC_SSAlpha_Varsity_Felt_Sheet-1.”

Next, continue to layer “AMC_SSAlpha_Varsity_Chenille_Sheet-1” by holding down the Shift key while clicking and dragging onto the base layer file. Then Shift+Click+Drag the file “AMC_SSAlpha_Varsity_Holes_Sheet-1” and lastly the file “AMC_SSAlpha_Varsity_Stitching_Sheet-1.” Save this file with a different name so that you do not save over the original document.

Now that you have your files layered, begin to color them as desired. First, double-click the felt layer. In the Layer Styles dialog box, select “Color Overlay” and then select “Color.” Next, select your color by double-clicking on the colored box and selecting your desired color.

Repeat the coloring process with the additional layers, selecting your desired colors as a color overlay.

Merge all layers. Then, select your desired letters with the Marquee Tool.

Click and drag them onto your layout and position as desired.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
