“Precious Boy” by Jennifer Labre

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I was inspired by Karen Chandler’s “Small But Strong” layout. I loved the overall design and the subtle details. I also loved how the color palette came together. I attempted to mimic the effect with my own layout, and by using Paula Wright’s Out of the Box Collection and Twigs and Twine Collection, I was able to convey the overall mood I was going for. Thanks to Karen’s great design, this layout came together quite easily.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To thread the wire ‘through’ the bookplate, I gave the wire layer a layer mask and reduced the opacity of the wire so I could see what I needed to erase. I then chose my paintbrush, making sure the foreground colour was black and sized my paintbrush accordingly. I then carefully erased the area that I wanted so as to make it look like the wire was threaded through the holes either side of the bookplate. Once I was happy with the result, I returned the opacity of the wire layer to 100%.

Journaling: Sitting on a bench at Dayelsford Lake was the perfect setting for a warm winter cuddle. I hate winter and any opportunity to get warm, I will take it! Pity you don't like it when I put my cold feet on yours to warm them up, LOL!!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the leaf frame from Paula Wright’s Twigs And Twine Collection and the red cord from her Durango Collection to be interlaced. For this look, I placed the frame under the cord, applied a layer mask to the cord, and used a basic brush to conceal the parts where I wanted the twigs to be visible.

“Sweetest Words” by Kelly Favor-Chronister

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I chose to scraplift needadietcoke’s (Kaye) “Fish Story.” I really liked the title and the one large photo. It gave me the impression of a front-page newspaper article. To achieve a similar look, yet be more of my “scrappy style,” I used the font Lettering Delights Inclination. The letters are set on different angels and are different sizes. I apparently have a phobia of 90-degree angles, and this font seems to suit me well.
In order to make the words of the title fit together, I put each word on its own layer. I adjusted their size and position using the Move and Transform Tools. I adjusted them until the overall look was similar to the original layout.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Scraplift a Member - needadietcoke's “Fish Story”
Journaling: As a mom, there are many rewards. Some of them are more obvious than others and some have different meanings for different moms, but for me, one of the most rewarding moments was when I heard the simple statement, “Mommy, I wuv you.”

“Once In a Lifetime” by Kim Meeder

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I chose to scraplift JoannB’s “Fruits of the new camera...” layout. I loved the angled film strip on her layout and knew I had the perfect photo for a filmstrip.
I thought the digital stickers were a cute addition to the layout; however, the dog sticker was the wrong color. It was a brown dog and I wanted the sticker to look like the black dog in the photo. It was easy to change. First, I set the Foreground Color to a light gray by using the Color Picker with a gray found in the sepia photos. Next, I used the Ctrl+U shortcut to bring up the Hue/Saturation window. I checked “Colorize” and made sure that “Preview” was also checked. I played with the Saturation and Lightness sliders until I had the exact color I wanted. (I didn’t need to move the Hue slider because it was set to the right place when I chose my foreground color.) Finally, I clicked “OK.” I now had two stickers that looked just like my miniature dachshund, Jelly Bean, and my orange tabby cat, Cody. Well, almost - my dog and cat are cuter!

A Designers Life: Brandy Hackman |
Less Than Perfect
I am a perfectionist, although, admittedly, far from being perfect. I like things to be “right” and I also want to accomplish all that I see done so wonderfully around me.
I recently taught a Sunday lesson to the women in my church. The theme of the lesson was “Striving to be the best we can be, NOT Perfect.” It seems that when given a topic to teach about, it is more often for the teacher’s benefit than the student’s and this was the case for me.
I began my lesson by sharing a newspaper article that I had come across about a certain “Patti Perfect.” The gist of the article went something like this:
Patti’s day starts off early as she gets up and runs a few miles. She arrives back home, showers and dresses in her starched skirt and blouse, wakes the family, happily helps children prepare for school, and cooks a hearty, homemade breakfast. Once her husband and older children are off to school, she spends a few minutes tidying up her beautifully decorated home, does a quick load of laundry, bakes some bread, and spends some creative time with her younger children. Once the children are quietly napping, she writes a letter to her congressman, prepares a lesson that she is teaching at the community center, inserts a few photos and a certificate into the children’s scrapbooks (noting with satisfaction that the family albums are all attractive and up-to-date!), and pays a few bills. After lunch, she drops her children off at Grandma’s house for a visit and then arrives at the elementary school where she works as a psychologist a few times a week. She also finishes up her assignment for the PTA. Home again, the children go down for their afternoon naps, she prepares a nutritious, well-balanced meal for dinner, waters her luxuriant plants, welcomes the school children home, and spends time with each one as she supervises homework assignments so that they can maintain those straight A’s. Later, they work on a family project, tying a quilt for the homeless shelter. Dinnertime and the family sits down to Mom’s tasty meal. They enjoy stimulating conversation and then all pitch in to clean up the kitchen... and on and on it goes into the evening.
I left out many of the little details of this obviously fictional character, but you get the idea, right? When I read this article, I laughed out loud. It sounded so ridiculous. How could I not laugh? But, I think, it is funny only because I somehow find myself trying to be this person. Is that crazy? Well, not crazy in the sense that I think most of us want to do better, learn more, and excel past where we were a year ago.
For this lesson, I did research, read a book and found a couple of other articles that helped me put things into perspective. There were some wonderful insights that I was able to share. One that I felt was very helpful was that we need to redefine what it means to be a supermom or superwoman.
She is NOT the ageless female with a gorgeous face and trendy hair, witty and intelligent, who maintains a perfect home, is a great cook, has adorable, well-behaved children, and always makes lots of money.
A real Superwoman IS:
- a young mother with the baby-blues still trying to breast-feed.
- a busy housewife who finally gets in the shower and gets herself ready for the day even though it is 3:30 in the afternoon.
- a night-school student who has to dig past the diapers and toys in her backpack to get to her books.
- a still-single career woman who, even though what she really wants is to get married and have children, is contributing and productive in her work and is finding fulfillment.
- a working mother who leans up against the shut door of the day care, tears streaming down her face as she listens to her toddler cry, “Mommy.”
I have learned a new motto to repeat to myself when I am feeling overwhelmed by needing to clean my messy kitchen, needing to help with homework, needing to make something for dinner, needing to catch up on the laundry, needing to read my scriptures, needing to take a shower, needing to work on product designs, needing to spend playtime with my kids, etc., etc....
I may not be superwoman (or “Patti Perfect”) and definitely am not able to do it all, but... I am eager, doing the best I can and ON THE VERGE OF CHANGE.
- Brandy

Favorite product I've designed:
Abstract Expressionism Collection Biggie

Abstract Expressionism was a fun collection to put together. I haven’t gotten my paints out a lot since my college days, but working on this collection had paint tubes and brushes strewn across my counter for weeks - a mess, but a good time.

- Cats playing with strings or ball of yarn (Use threads and yarns in ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fabric Arts.)
- Scouting and learning knot tying
- Layout about your favorite linens, especially if they were passed down from family
- Document fitting into a smaller size of clothing
- Swimming or other water sports (use wavy/curly paper templates in ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Rustic Stiches)

Layout by Joyce Schardt

Congratulations, Joyce Schardt! We loved your idea so much we had to share it with everybody! Please contact [email protected] to claim your gift.

Project/Printable ideas:
- Have fun creating a time capsule with your family. Fill a shoebox with current day items like a newspaper, a list of goals for the future, favorite small toys, a receipt or list of current prices of items such as gas, etc. Decorate box and add the date to open with the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Date Clock.
- Create a personal “Style Book” filled with photos of clothing you like that you cut out from ads or magazines (use ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Fabric Arts or Brush Set: Worn Threads).
- Design an album of photos of all the favorite outfits of your baby or teen.
- Use ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Date Clock to note the date of an event on an invitation.
- Give a gift card or gift certificate with a card you create that says “No Strings Attached” (use lots of strings from ScrapSimple Embellishment Template: Fabric Arts).
- Create a layout with the club products and print to iron-on transfer in reverse and iron directly to a canvas tote bag.
- Print stitches on the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Rustic Stitches onto an iron-on transfer and transfer design to a small decorative pillow cover; use as a guide for real stitching.
- “A Day in the Life of” album with photos and times shown on the clock.
- Recycle an old wooden plaque or sign by creating new art for it. Adhere to sign with glue, such as Mod Podge. After drying, use a bit of sandpaper to distress your image to get a worn in look and ink the edges.

Mini Tutorial - Creating Digital Fabric Photos:
Durin Eberhart’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Fabric Arts are just perfect for blending photos to make them look like printed on fabric.
- Add a paper template (I used “DEB_SSPaper_FabricArts_1.png”) to your layout.
- Place the photo on top and clip it to the paper template layer (Ctrl+Alt+G).
- Change the Blend Mode of the top photo layer to “Overlay.” (This depends on the photo; “Soft Light” or “Multiply” are great sometimes, just play around!)
- Add a layer on top of your photo, clip it to your photo layer, and use Brandie Valenzuela’s Brush Set: Worn Threads to add some texture. (I used orange as color.)
- Change the Blend Mode of the brushwork layer to “Multiply” and reduce the Opacity to 44%.
That’s it! Have fun!

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
