Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there is less than one week until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Life Muses by Ro: Count On Change

During the 1980’s, Gary and I lived in the great state of Oklahoma for two and a half years. He was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base while I completed my Bachelor’s of Music Education at the University of Oklahoma. We truly loved it in Oklahoma because Oklahomans are some of the friendliest people we’ve ever met.

I have to admit that because I am from Utah where weather changes occur in an expected manner, the fickleness of Oklahoma weather unnerved me at first. I should have realized what it would be like when the realtor that helped us find our first apartment said, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a little bit. It will change.”

Yes, the weather changed. In fact, it changed so rapidly that I quickly learned to carry an umbrella with me everywhere I went.

I learned that changes in the weather are appreciated in Oklahoma. Umbrellas are required because one never knows when a rainstorm will arrive. But, rainstorms are the lifeblood of the area and so they are welcomed. The people there don’t rely on irrigation to water their lawns and agriculture, as we do in Utah. Oklahoma relies on rain and when a drought hits the state, it is a serious matter.

As I began to appreciate this fact, I realized that, sometimes, events that appear at first glance to be negative are actually blessings. Sure, it is a terrible thing when a tornado rolls up Oklahoma. People are rightfully afraid of them. But, it is the same volatility of the weather that sometimes spawns hailstones and tornados that brings great, soaking rainstorms to make the state green.

Isn’t this how our lives are? The stormy times in our lives bring forth the most fruit. While we don’t enjoy life-tornados, the whirling about straightens us out. Illness teaches us to appreciate good health. Financial storms teach us to celebrate times of plenty. When we lose love or friendship, we begin to understand how valuable relationships are. When we suffer, we gain compassion for others, losing judgmental feelings that separate us from our true selves. When we face the limits of mortality, we appreciate the fact that our lives are meaningful.

The funny thing about change is that when we stop trying to keep ourselves still, we open the door to deep, meaningful improvements in our lives. We begin to understand that everything in this life is transitory. We discover that if we don’t like the weather of our current experience, we just be patient because just as surely as the moon spins around the earth, change will arrive to thrust us into something new.

Sometimes, I dream that I am still in Oklahoma, listening to the sound of a thunderstorm roll across the state. But then, I wake up and realize that it was the sound of change rolling through my life that I heard in my ears.

What will happen next? Only God knows. But whatever might come, it will be a change. Change... something you can count on.

There are times in all of our lives that mark significant changes: those turning points that denote the “before” or “after” another stage of our lives. December 31, 2006 was one of those momentous days in our family because it was the day that Michael left for Iraq.

We were stationed in Hawaii at the time and Michael was required to spend time on the mainland for his desert training. As a small blessing, my parents, aunt and uncle, and our eldest daughter Ashley were able to visit him on the weekend before he left the country.

Not long after their time together, we had a “Hero” challenge here at Scrap Girls. Using the pictures that my step-mom had taken and the letter that Ashley had written to her father, I made a digital scrapbooking layout for the chat. My daughter’s lovely words brought tears to my eyes and my husband treasured the page. But, the layout itself did not live up to the beauty of that moment.

The original page had all of the basics, but lacked a clear focus – there was no star of the show. To fix that, I make the photograph larger so that Ashley and Michael are about 2/3 as large as the layout. And, because I want the two of them to be the focus, I use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to select the busy background and use the Delete key to erase it. Then, I use the Eraser Tool to clean up the edges.

Another problem with the original is that the journaling is simply too hard to read on the pretty paper. My goal this time is to make the wording more legible and reinforce its importance to the layout.

Something else that bothers me about the first version of this layout is that it has no movement. To counteract this, I arrange two sets of angles. The title and the torn paper are parallel to each other (green lines) as are the pencil and the charm (pink lines). Not only does this keep everything moving around the page, but it also creates a virtual frame, encompassing the central focus of my digital scrapbooking layout.

The pencil from High School Edge Collection Biggie, sailor ribbon charm from Combat: International Collection and the Basic Night paper from A Beautiful Year Collection Biggie are used to create the visual interest.

To complete my do-over, I continue adding Americana-themed items to add more color and panache. One other item to note is the use of repetition with the stars, which are scaled in three different sizes.

By comparing the before and after, I am much happier with the results of this rendition and feel I have come closer to paying tribute to the powerful emotion voiced in Ashley’s letter.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.).
