“My Little Cowgirl” by Launa Valente

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To add Cara's rosey cheeks back in to the black and white photo, I added a new layer above the photo. I then picked out a nice, pink color, chose a soft round brush and set the Opacity very low, about 29%, and painted her cheeks.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For the background photo treatment, I first enlarged the photo to cover the width of the layout. Then I simply changed the Blend Mode of the photo layer to “Multiply.” To finish it off, I grunged up the bottom by applying a layer mask and then using the Brush Set: Photo Transfer Edges to erase portions of it.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I chose to scrap-lift Sue’s (schmoo) “Hoo U R” layout that she did for Marnie’s 04/10/08 sketch challenge. It is about her son Cody and what he is like as a three-year-old. I love this layout! The colors are vibrant, the embellishments are playful and there are so many interesting details that one can draw upon for inspiration. My layout is not an exact lift, but if you look closely, you will find details she used in her layout that I incorporated in mine.
Since my layout is about my little girl, I chose softer colors. To create the background paper, I used Paula Wright’s yellow-green paper from her Twigs and Twine Collection. Directly above this layer, I placed the dots paper, also from the same collection, and set the Blend Mode to “Pin Light.” I then added the embroidered roses set at “Overlay.”

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make my page look “wet,” I placed Theresa’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Water Drops on my layout above the bottom paper layer. Then I selected the Water Drops paper by clicking the thumbnail image of it in the Layers Palette, chose the “Clear Drops” style from Amanda’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Water 6101 in the drop-down menu of the Layer Styles in the Artwork and Effects Palette and clicked on “Apply.” I wanted the water drops to be somewhat subtle so, while keeping the Water Drops paper selected, I reduced the Opacity to 36%.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to add a stacked look to my main photo on my layout. To do this in a quick way, I decided to use Sarah Batdorf’s Scrap Simple Tools - Actions: Stacked Photos PSE 6501. It is such a nice, easy way to get several different stacked photo looks.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this assignment, I chose to scraplift lgsouthfla’s “Scorpio.” It was difficult to pick a layout from Linda’s beautiful gallery, but I loved the brush work she did on this layout. I have had Lori Cook’s Brush Set: Decorative Swirls Grunged in my stash for a while and just haven’t found a way to use them as beautifully as Linda did.
To make the brush work appear realistic where it transitions from the background paper to the photo, I wanted to make a small gap in the swirls. With my swirl layer selected, I Ctrl+Clicked on the thumbnail of the photo layer to easily select only the parts of the swirls on top of the photo. Then, Shift+Ctrl+J creates a new Layer via Cut. This puts the swirls that are on the photo on their own layer. With the background swirls layer selected, I used a small hard round brush to erase a tiny bit of the swirls next to the photo. I used the same procedure by the cardboard.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements CS3
Name of challenge: Scraplift a Member - lgsouthfla's “Scorpio”

Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there is less than one week until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have TWO spots left! That's right... JUST TWO! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

A Designers Life: Theresa Kavouras |
Confessions of a Former Shopaholic
It’s true. I am an admitted former shopaholic. I just love to spend money.
But, I don’t buy high priced or luxurious items; rather I hit the clearance racks. I hit them and I buy and I buy and I buy. I blame my parents, really. They never shopped the high-end stores that surrounded us in New York. Macy’s, Bamberger’s, Nordstrom’s, Lord and Taylor... I don’t think I set foot in one of those stores until I was old enough to buy my own clothes. Instead, we drove two and a half hours, twice a year, to Pennsylvania, where there was no sales tax on clothes and where discount stores like K-Mart and Zayre’s could be found.
To this day, I can’t resist a sale or a coupon. I can’t resist a bargain.
After my children were old enough to go to pre-school, I pondered the hours I’d have to myself and what I was going to do with them. I was cleaning out my girls’ closet one day and thought I’d donate the clothes to the pre-school in case they needed extra items for accidents and such. One of the teachers offered me money for some of the higher end products. I didn’t know whether to be offended or to take the money and run! She said that the girls had such beautiful clothing and that I should consider selling them on eBay rather than giving them away.
eBay? What is eBay?
I went home and searched the internet for this eBay. Not really sure what it was I had found, I tried listing some items and was shocked to watch them sell right before my eyes! The women were frenzied to get their hands on what I was selling. At the time, I hadn’t realized I was selling items for way less than I should have been listing them for. But, as time wore on, I learned the trade. Before you knew it, I ran out of used items that the girls had grown out of. I needed inventory. But, how would I get inventory?
Sales! Coupons! Clearance racks! It was all right there in front of me. My excuse to shop! And, what an excuse it was. I spent my days scouring department stores looking for the perfect bargains. Then I’d turn around and sell them when the clothes came back in season. It was the perfect job for a shopaholic. And, for me, it was a lucrative one.
A few years later, I found Scrap Girls and my eBay business slowly came to a halt since I had found something else to occupy my time. I just couldn’t keep up with the selling. I closed the eBay room door and forgot about it. The room sat in disarray for at least a year. I really wanted to use this room for my scrapbooking office, but I couldn’t muster the strength to get in there and start selling again.
But, recently, my husband saw a sign advertising a children’s clothing consignment sale in the area. This was just the thing I needed to clean out that room once and for all. It took me weeks to inventory what I had. The sale only allowed fall and winter items, but I was shocked to realize that I had some 300+ items that could go to the sale! Every day my husband would come in and say, “You must be thrilled to be getting rid of all that baggage.”
Thrilled? How about liberated? Expunged. Cleansed. Freed. Rescued. Saved.
Strong words? Maybe. But after the check that came in the mail, I’m counting down the days for the spring and summer sale (and thinking of my new office!)
I mean, sure, I still shop. I can’t resist a bargain. But, I don’t shop like I used to. When I get that urge... when the bargains and clearance racks start calling my name, I go shop online. After I fill up my virtual shopping cart, I take a good look at the bargains I have found.
I admire it.
Then I empty it.
And, I’m satisfied.
- Theresa

Favorite product I've designed:
Clean It Up Collection Mini

I think that anyone who is an organizing wizard, or those who wish to be, can learn a lot by scrapbooking their organizational skills, or lack thereof. I love the colors in this kit and the fact that it makes one of the hardest chores of life look bright and cheerful!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
