Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there is less than one week until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Photo: Nichole Van Photography

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!

Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.

If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have TWO spots left! That's right... JUST TWO! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention!

Life Muses by Ro: A Big Mistake

Have you ever made a mistake? A big mistake?

I have.

Let’s see... which of my many mistakes shall I tell you about today? I’ve made some whoppers.

Don’t get the wrong idea; I’ve never done anything immoral or illegal. I’ve mostly concentrated my mistake efforts as the jester that seemingly lives to amuse and confuse people who live in the Land of Mistakedom.

Back to one of my whopper mistakes. Which one to tell you? Hmmmm... I’ve got one for you. I just made this mistake last week.

Gary and Julianne drove me over to the bank on our way to an appointment. They waited in the car while I went inside to do my banking.

It just so happened that we were driving – for the first time – a new-used car we purchased a few hours previously for Julianne as a replacement for the totaled car that one of her friends had “borrowed” without permission. And so, in honor of the first time out, Julianne was in the driver’s seat.

Because it was a new-to-us car, I wasn’t used to looking for it and, frankly, I hadn’t noticed too much what it did look like. I knew it was a very dark blue.

When I came out of the bank, I first looked for my gold Camry. Once I remembered that I hadn’t driven myself to the bank, I recalled that we arrived in the new-used car. I looked for a car that might be it.

Then I spotted it. As I walked over to the passenger’s seat, I thought, “Hey, look at the windows. They’re dark. That’s nice.”

I opened the door and noticed a backpack on the floor. I thought, “That’s odd. Why did Gary put that there?”

I climbed in and was about to ask about the backpack when I heard, “I don’t think you’re in the right car.”

I whipped my eyes over to the driver’s seat. A young man was grinning at me.

I began looking around for the door handle. I wanted to get out fast! I mumbled something about being confused because it was the first time I had ridden in my daughter’s car and that his is about the same color. I looked in the back seat and saw a little boy staring at the crazy lady who had just climbed into his family’s car uninvited.

The man began to roar with laughter. He roared so loudly and completely that his Adam’s apple throbbed as it made room for the sound. The more I tried to explain what happened, the harder he laughed.

I managed to escape and quickly located our car. Then, I looked back. I had climbed into a black car. Our car is blue. I had made a big, silly mistake because the two vehicles looked nothing alike. Embarrassment doesn’t quite cover how I felt at that moment. I felt foolish.

The good thing about my escapade is that, perhaps, I’d made up my “goofy mistake” quotient for at least several months.

But, you never know... I could trip, say the wrong thing, walk out of a restroom with my skirt tucked into the back of my nylons, reach out and hold the wrong hand at the mall, pour sour milk on a bowl of cereal, brush my teeth with hemorrhoid cream, or an endless list of things. I’ve done these things before and so it seems likely that I’ll do them again.

I ought to know; I’ve done them all.

But you know what? I think it is okay that I make mistakes. Making mistakes means that I’m doing something. Messing up is part of this life. When we make mistakes, we learn humility. We learn that we aren’t infallible. We learn compassion for other people and, if we are wise, we learn to laugh at ourselves.

Here’s to the desire that all of our mistakes make us giggle. And, here’s to the hope that I will not climb into someone else’s car for at least another week.

Mistakenly yours,

- Ro

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Creating Personalized Album Window Inserts

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Windows XP.

I love to shop the clearance section; you never know what you might find. A few years back, I found some beautiful 8”x8” scrapbook albums, each of which had a window insert on the cover to place a photo. I didn’t necessarily want to place a photo in mine since the albums are family albums. So, using my digital scrapbooking supplies, I was able to personalize my album covers. This is a great little project that can help even the plainest of albums look super!

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Album

First, we need to take a look at your album cover. The window is one size, but the pocket that it is in is a larger size. Most albums already come with a faux photo like this album.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Trace window opening

Remove the faux photo and turn it around so that the white is showing. (Note: If your album did not come with a faux photo, simply cut a piece of white paper to size to fit in the pocket behind the front cover. Make sure that it fits in the pocket with little room to shift or move.) Write the word “top” at the top of that piece of paper and reinsert it so the word top IS at the top. Using a pencil, draw an outline of the window directly on the insert.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Add 1/8" border

Remove the insert and draw a box about 1/8” outside the box you just traced.  This will allow for some extra wiggle room on your insert.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Measure paper

Using a ruler, measure the outside dimensions of the paper and record the measurement...

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Measure outside interior box

...and the larger inside box. Record this measurement.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Create new document using paper's dimensions

Now, go to your computer. Open a new document in which the measurements are the same as the entire insert (your first measurement).

Create a new layer.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Create fixed size marquee square

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Select “Fixed Size.” Plug in the size of the interior measurements (your second measurement). Place the marquee square in the middle of your document or, looking at your drawing, in the place where it falls on your actual insert.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Go to Edit> Stroke

Now, go to Edit> Stroke.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Assign center stroke in red

Assign a center stroke of about 3px in a bright color. I use red.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Don't extend readable design past stroke

This layer becomes your boundary layer. Use it to make sure that your readable design does not extend beyond this square. (Note: You will want to make sure that your background covers your entire document to make trimming easier after you print out your image.)

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Turn off stroke layer before printing

After you are finished with your design, turn off the layer containing the safe area boundary before you print.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Printing setup

Set up your picture for printing. Remember to UNCHECK the button that says “Scale to Fit Media” since you want this to print at actual size.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Print and trim your insert

Print your image and cut it right to the edge of your image. Now, place your new insert into your album. You now have a personalized album cover. Imagine the possibilities and have fun!

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
