Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Best of the Scrap Girls Blog: Forgotten Gem

Note from Ro: I was absolutely blown away by this post by Angela Blanchard on the Scrap Girls blog. That... is a what? A drawing? I thought it was a photo at first. You have to see this!

I love to create art, and one of the earliest ways I did this was by drawing. Like most kids, I had the 64 count box of crayons, and I remember when I finally got the box of 120 that had the sharpener in the back - it was beautiful! Like a rainbow in a box! As I got older, I experimented with pastels, pen & ink and oil paints, but my favorite medium has to be colored pencils. I always have a work in progress on my drawing board. The strange thing, however, is that I have never done a scrapbook layout of one of my drawings. So, I set about to remedy this fact and record some of my work.

The layout I did was of the latest drawing I’ve completed, called “Forgotten Gem.” My husband and I were out in the Oregon desert when we came across this old car. I’m not sure what model or make of car it is, but it has a regal, vintage look that just doesn’t belong decaying in the desert. How did the car wind up here? Why did someone abandon it? What roads did it travel in its lifetime? These were just some of the questions that came to mind as I photographed the car.

I may not have gotten answers to my questions, but when I look at the drawing I realize that this gem in the desert is no longer forgotten. The digital layout has several actual photographs of the car in the negative strip and my drawn rendition at the bottom.

Way Cool Stuff Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: Easy Pages

Easy Pages are premade layouts created just for you by the designers here at Scrap Girls. They are an excellent resource for the novice as well as the experienced digital scrapbooker. The best thing about Easy Pages is that they are... well, EASY!

An Easy Page is a flattened, PNG image with a window for your photo. The individual elements of an Easy Page cannot be altered. However, there are many ways to make an Easy Page your own. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Create your title with some word art or alphas from another collection.
Include a date and journaling.
Rotate or flip your Easy Page to better fit your photos.
Use black & white or sepia photos.
Use a photo mask on your photos.
Place a transparency overlay on top of the Easy Page.
Use a grungy brush on a new layer to add texture or accent your title.
Change colors of the Easy Page using the color adjustment features in your software.
Reduce the size of the Easy Page, place a coordinating background paper underneath and center the Easy Page to give a matted look.
Add a few embellishments of your choice.

You may have noticed that the ideas listed above are things that you do when you create your own layout from scratch. An Easy Page just provides you with a strong design to build upon. So, go on, grab an Easy Page and make it your own!

(Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!)
