Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Photo: Nichole Van Photography

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!

Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.

If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have THREE spots left! That's right... JUST THREE! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention!

Life Muses by Ro: Make Room for Blessings

I’ve heard it said that if your hands are clasped tight, they are not open to receive. Think about it. When you are grasping onto something you currently have because you can’t let it go, can someone place something in your hands? When I learned about this concept a few years ago, I asked myself if I was holding onto things. If I was, what were they?

It didn’t take long for me to know what they were. I had a house full of things that I never used. I’d been collecting these items for nearly three decades. I kept them because I was raised by parents and grandparents who had been through the depression. My grandmother rarely threw anything away. She didn’t have much, but what she did have, she used completely. Christmas wrapping paper was carefully folded away. Ribbons were saved until they were too smashed to recognize. Cards were cut up and used as gift tags.

Grandma often talked about being thrifty. One of her favorite sayings was, “Most women throw more out their back door than their husband can carry in the front door.”

My problem was that I don't live in the depression. We’ve lived in a completely different time and we have more than people owned during that time. Even during some of our worst financial times, we were never destitute enough that I couldn’t buy a spool of thread, if I needed one. (This happened to my grandmother.) But, because I had been raised with a scarcity mentality, I had been trying to prepare for a nuclear war level disaster. I’d be prepared, you see, if one occurred. Yep, if there was a nuclear war, I’d have plenty of old clothes, bits of fabric, broken dishes, and 20-year-old cans to tide us over.

Once I realized how silly I was being, I began cleaning out. I understood that I didn’t need those things, even if there was a terrible disaster. Then I realized that I needed to share my extra things with people who would use them.

It has taken years to make progress as old habits die hard, but Gary and I are starting to see the bottom of the pile. I cleared out unused home decorations, craft supplies that I would never craft anything with, clothing that I hadn’t worn in over a year, and clothing that didn’t fit. I threw away makeup I had moved from state to state for decades. I got rid of furniture that had been stored. I gave away educational music to a new teacher who was struggling to build her own library. I sold books that I would never read again on Amazon.

When the first round was over, I walked through my home and breathed. It felt good. I knew right then that I would never hold onto so much stuff. I realized that the stuff was holding me back. It was binding me to an uncertain past and was stopping me from receiving a better future.

I’d like to tell you that we completely cleaned everything right then, but that wouldn’t be the truth. It has been a seemingly endless journey. But, as we travel forward, we are releasing more into the world and have made room for additional blessings to return in the process.

Now I try to only keep things that give me pleasure and joy. I keep things that allow me to express myself. I keep things that I love. I keep things that I will use to bless myself and my family. And, I remind myself that every time I start feeling flustered, a likely source of the weight I feel is the excess stuff in my environment.

Make room for blessings.

  1. Clean out your closets.
  2. Go through your drawers.
  3. Look closely at what you have stacked on your shelves.
  4. Clean out your computer files.

Make room for blessings. Open your hands; release your grasp on the old and wait for the new to arrive. And then, when blessings come, as they surely will, say a prayer of thanks that you have been so fortunate.

- Ro

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Adding Color to a ScrapSimple Template

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.

For this digital scrapbooking tutorial, I will be using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Pressed Petals 1.

First, choose a flower that you want to colorize and open the layered PSD file. I will be using the Aquilegia flower. This particular product comes with each section of the flower separated onto its own layer, making it much easier to add a different color to each part of the flower. Next, we are going to manipulate the Color Balance, Hue/Saturation, Curves, and Brightness/Contrast to get the desired colors.

Color Balance

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Color Balance

I recommend coloring the petals first, so you will need to click onto the petal layer. Then, click on Image> Adjustments> Color Balance. Start playing with the sliders by adding in red, yellow, magenta, etc. Watch your image as you move the sliders until it reaches the color you desire. (Note: If the pop-up window is covering your image, click on the blue header bar of the box and drag it to another area on your screen so that your image becomes visible.)

Curves

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Curves

If the image appears to be too light or dark, you can darken or lighten it by clicking on Image> Adjustments> Curves. Click in the center of the diagonal line that stretches across the box and drag it to either side. One direction will lighten the image; the other direction will darken it.

Hue/Saturation

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Hue/Saturation

If the colors appear to be too bright, you can bring down the saturation a bit (neutralize some of the color). Click on Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation. If you move the saturation slider to the left, it will take some of the brightness out. You can also try playing with the Hue slider (the top slider) to adjust the color a bit more.

Brightness/Contrast

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Brightness/Contrast

If you want more contrast in your image, click on Image> Adjust> Brightness/Contrast. Again, move the sliders back and forth while watching your image until you get the desired contrast.

Once you have the desired color on the petals, repeat these steps for each layer of the flower until each section is the color of your choice. Then, merge the layers together and drag it onto your layout.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
