Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Photo: Nichole Van Photography

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!

Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.

If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have THREE spots left! That's right... JUST THREE! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention!

Life Muses by Ro: Moth Friend

My roommate flew into our quarters when the maintenance man came to reset my CD player. She flew in over our heads and made a mad dash for the bathroom. Since I was occupied, I made a mental note that I would have to shoo my new pal away later.

However, she was too shy to allow me to encourage her to leave my space. She’d carefully flit from room to room, making sure I didn’t see her long enough to know where she was.

I might have forgotten her completely, but as I prepared to go to bed the second day of our friendship, I turned off all of the lights in the room except the little reading light over my pillow and walked over to the table to get a book to read. When I came back, I discovered her perched very daintily upon my bed sheets. It appeared that she believed the bed had been turned down for her and that I was going to read her a bedtime story.

Now, what do you think a digital scrapbooker would do under such circumstances? Take a photo, of course. The light sparkled on her wings and she seemed to glow as she waited on the cream bed sheets for her moment of fame to arrive.

I quietly retrieved my camera and snuck up on her. I thought that as soon as I took my first photo, the sound would startle her and she would fly away. However, it seems my moth was meant for the spotlight. She merely looked at me as I worked. After a few shots, she felt safe enough to allow me to draw up very close as I shot her from various angles.

When she finally tired of the game we were playing, she looked at me and walked towards the camera. Her close proximity froze my camera’s auto focus function and, before I could repair it, the opportunity had passed. She almost smiled at me as she pranced over to the edge of the bed and attached herself to the side of the mattress, her wings neatly tucked into her side, and went to sleep.

I quickly realized I had a serious problem. My roommate wanted to sleep in my bed, but that simply could not be allowed. If I climbed in with her, I would smash her when I pulled up the blankets. I decided that I simply had to be the grown-up in the room. She needed to be put out of her misery. It was time to move onto greener pastures... or, should I say, the bushes outside my door?

I grabbed my sun hat and gently placed it over her. Holding my breath, I carefully closed the sides together, praying that I hadn’t squished her in the process. Then I went to the door and offered the chance to fly away to a better home.

She wasn’t convinced.

But I was; she had to move on. I shook my hat so vigorously that she was forced to fly out of it. While she was recovering from the shock, I slammed the door shut. I believed she was onto a better life.

Ahhhh... I was alone.

I have considered how much alike my moth friend and I seem to be. I went to Arizona to find the light I needed to rebalance my life. I was looking for the light I needed to heal me physically, emotionally and to reclaim my ability to be joyful each day. I was determined to find it, hold it, and use it no matter what it took. I decided, while I was there, that I truly am a child of God and that because this is true, it is right for me to care of myself completely. No part is to be left out. I will take care of my body so it will be strong and healthy. I will take care of my emotional self so I am able to give and receive love. I will continue to build my spiritual self because it is the source of who I am and the foundation of my strength. I will stimulate my mind by learning new skills. I will experience joyful moments by allowing myself to do things that feel joyful to me.

My moth friend was also looking for the light she desired. Her needs are simpler, and I highly suspect she doesn’t sit about considering the ramifications of the next presidential election as I sometimes do. I’m certain she doesn’t have to worry about balancing her medications, blowing her hair or deciding what time to set the alarm clock. In such a determined, fixed way, she put her life in danger simply to bask in the light.

Oh, how wonderful – to bask in the light.

Thank you, my friend, for teaching me a sweet lesson.

Question: Can someone please help? I’m trying to use this template, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Curled Edges. I've gotten as far as getting the paper onto the curled edge and fiddling with opacity to make it look like the paper. At this point, I've only got a curled edge on my blank file. But, when I try to bring my background paper back over to fill the rest of my white file, I can't figure out how to “cut” it to make it look attached to the curl. Make sense? Help! I'm lost.

Answer 1: Your questions make sense. I don't have the instructions in front of me right now (laptop is out for repair), but I do have that product and use it a lot. I find I still have to refer to the instructions that were included.

I just found them! I had printed them out. If you look at them, there are screenshots to help guide you along the way - just follow along very closely. I still have to refer to them if I haven't used it in a while. If you can't get it to work after you've used the instructions let us know!

If you change the title of your question to “Curled Edges Help!” you will have a better chance of getting the help you need from the “people who know.” (Just go to “Options” and you can change it there.) Paper tear is a whole other product.

Answer 2: I use these a lot and every single time I do it I have to follow the directions very carefully. I printed them out and you cannot skip one single step. It’s all about what layer you have active when you hit Delete. Make sure yours is EXACTLY like the one on the directions.

Answer 3: You're making me think I should have read the instructions on these. I never have. I use the Polygonal Lasso Tool with layer masks to hide the part of the paper I don't want to show. Don't know if you can do that in PSE or not.

Answer 4: After having placed the curled edge onto your layer, take the Magic Wand and make sure the layer with the edge is active, then select the part you want to hide. Go to the layer with the paper you want to erase and hit Delete. That should work. Jan has made nice instructions that you normally would download with the file. There are nice screenshots.

Response: Thanks all. It seems to be working!

---

Question: Does anyone know if it's possible to rotate brushes in PSE 5.0, and if so, how to do it? It drives me nuts not being able to do that. In the meantime, I have just been rotating my layer, but I would much rather be able to rotate my brush. Thank you!

Answer 1: You sure can! When you have your brush selected, look over at the right side of the PSE toolbar and you'll see “More Options” with a little picture of a brush beside it. There you can choose to rotate (angle), squish (roundness), and do all manner of neat things with your brushes! Have fun!

Answer 2: Yes, you definitely can rotate brushes in PSE5! Click on the “More Options” on the right side of the Options bar. Down at the bottom is a place where you can type in an actual angle (such as -90 degrees to flip it to the left) or you can just click and drag on the arrow in the little picture.

---

Question: I finally bought Erica's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Punch Out 5401 and was playing around. Is there a way to punch out so that it shows the paper below? I am only getting black or white or the color of my top paper. I’m not sure if those are the only options or if I am missing something obvious. Thanks!

Answer 1: I use the Elliptical Marquee Tool and fill it with the foreground color ON A LAYER ABOVE where I want the style to work. The five different punch out styles do different things - some do give you a WHITE HOLE through your paper, but some don't - they just give an indentation into your paper or embellishment or whatever you have decided to PUNCH. I put my round hole on a layer above the paper and my paper could be punched through to white (that was below it), or it could just be indented deeply where I had placed my round hole. Like any style, you can use the Style and Effect Palette to increase or decrease the amount of the style.

Response 1: But, what if I want it to punch through a solid paper so that a patterned paper below it shows through? For example, I have a layer of text, a layer of solid and then the bottom layer is a pattern. I am thinking this is not designed to punch “out” the solid paper in the text form so that the pattern shows through. (Did that sentence make sense?) I think I will have to just go back to using the bevels to do this.

Answer 2: I'm a lot lazier than that. I select the text the same way, but then just click on my layer, hit Delete, and hide my text layer. Or, if I'm not quite sure of the placement, I select the text and then select inverse and click on my other layer and add a layer mask. Both ways have the paper underneath showing through. I add the drop shadow and stuff to the paper, too.

Answer 3: I know exactly what you are getting at. I was actually working with this style last night, experimenting to see what it did. I applied it to a photo just to see if it would punch it into the background, but I got a lovely indent of the paper below. (I found I could fill it with a smaller version of the photo. Neat.) So, you have to find another way to do it. Frustrating I know, but this is a great style and I am sure Erica will be along soon to give you lots of ideas on how to use it to the best advantage. I will watch for any replies for interesting ways to use it, so thanks for asking.

Answer 4: I made a document with the following starting at the bottom: patterned paper, a solid, a ribbon, and text. I then tried all of the five punch out styles and even moved the placement of the punch out to try to get what you were looking for. I cannot get it to do what you want. I did get some VERY interesting results, not what you wanted, but interesting none the same. It would be nice to hear from Erica on how they are supposed to work and can we do what you are trying to accomplish. I'd like to know as well. If you do hear from Erica directly, please let me know, as I'd like to use this style to its fullest potential.

Answer 5: I love Erica's Punch Out Style and use it often. (I even used it on my siggy.) I don't think it will leave a space so that you can see something through it. You can do that with brushes or custom shapes, though. Just stamp the shape you want on the layer you want to cut out and then select it with the Magic Wand and Delete it. A shape will be cut into the layer you stamped and your next layer down will show through. You can then add shadows or whatever to get a dimensional effect. If you stamp a custom shape, just simplify the layer before you delete or add styles.

Response 2: Yes, this is what I had done previously. I was just trying to take a shortcut around adding the shadows and stuff! There are some great effects that can be done with Punch Out though. I am off to play some more!

  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
