“Kindergarten” layout by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the background papers from Angela Blanchard’s Heraldic Crest Collection to fit the school time theme. I created a new layer that I filled in with white color (it can be any color) and applied Syndee Nuckles’ ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: School Papers 6301 to the layer. I then duplicated the layer and then merged them both. Then, I changed the Blend Mode to “Soft Light.” To make the blue paper even more school like, I created a new layer for the brushwork (color white) with Amanda McGee’s Brush Set: School Time Doodle Biggie and changed the Blend Mode to “Soft Light.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to have lined notebook paper in my journal, I placed a paper from Erica Hite’s Dear Diary Collection on the layer above the journal paper layer and applied a clipping mask. Next, I lowered the opacity of the notebook paper layer to 36%. But, now the metal spirals appeared faded. This was easy to fix. I simply highlighted the journal paper layer and selected the spiral rings using the Magic Wand Tool with a tolerance setting of 40%. Marching ants appeared around the wire and holes. Finally, I highlighted the notebook paper layer and clicked Delete. I was left with a journal containing lined paper.

Journaling: Andrew, you could hardly wait for the first day of school this year. Not because you missed your friends. Not because you were going into the second grade. Why? Because you would get to ride the school bus this year. How cool is that!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Both of my daughters are experiencing big life events this year as far as school is concerned, and I wanted to document the occasion! Everything about this page is symbolic... their school colors of blue and white, the book element, the chalkboard elements, and, though it’s still summer here, the color of the fall leaves. Because there was a lot of color that would clash with my planned color scheme, I used Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 to make crisp black and white images. I matted them onto Erica Hite’s Chalkboard Embellishments Biggie so that they’d “pop” when layered over all those colorful elements. I really like the mix of doodley, antique and nature-inspired elements. You wouldn’t think that it would all mix that well, but it really creates interesting visual depth.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Name of challenge: Back to School
Journaling: This is a landmark year for the girls. Kaitlyn started her Senior year and Haley started Kindergarten. After a relaxing summer, both of them were excited to get their year started. Here’s to learning new things and making new friends!

To give the appearance of chalk dust on the chalkboard, I used one of Brandie's Well Worn paper templates colored white, and reduced the Opacity to 56%.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I loved the texture of one of the Angela Blanchard’s papers, but wanted to change the color and combine it with the texture of a paper by Syndee Nuckles. I placed Angela’s paper above Syndee’s and changed the Blend Mode to “Overlay.” To get the color just right, I enhanced the color by adjusting the Hue and Saturation.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

“College Grad” layout by Jennifer Labre
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
If you read my journaling on this layout, you will see that I obtained a college degree in Mass Communications with an English minor. You would think that it would then be easy for me to journal amazing stories on my pages. But I, like so many others, often struggle to tell my stories. I admit that I often leave out the stories behind the photos, instead only putting a title and a date. But, it is so important to document the stories behind the photos. Who cares if it isn’t the most eloquent or perfectly told story? Future generations will love to read these stories and learn more about you and your life.
For me, I don’t concentrate on choosing the perfect word – I simply write from my heart, including as many details as I can remember. And then, of course, I always run spell check. There’s nothing worse than printing out your page and realizing you’ve spelled something wrong! (Of course, thank goodness these pages are digital, so if we have to go back and change something we can.) The bottom line, tell your stories, you’ll be glad you did!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements CS
Name of challenge: Back to School
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: In December of 1995 I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. I began my college career in September 1989 after graduating from high school. I started my journey with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. I quickly changed my major to Psychology and when I realized
that I’d have to go to school for 12 years to do what I wanted, I changed my major again. It took some time, even taking a year and a half off, to figure out just what I wanted to do. I ended up going with what I do best - writing. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications - with a focus on journalism and public relations. I also obtained an English minor. Going to college was one of the best things I have done - I just wish I had realized it at the time. I would love to go back one day and take classes in something else or even complete my English degree.

Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have THREE spots left! That's right... JUST THREE! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

A Designers Life: Thao Cosgrove |
Finding Friends and More
Loud, happy children running in every direction; grown-ups chattering about families, jobs and politics; everyone greeting each other with warm, welcoming hugs; and a bounty of sweet pastries, snacks and freshly brewed coffee lovingly set out at this jovial get-together.
If I were to picture a family reunion, this is what it would look like. However, this scene is a typical Sunday morning at my church.
When my husband and I first moved to Orlando two years ago, one of our biggest challenges was finding a good church. Not only did we realize that we needed to be spiritually fed and to have a place to worship and tithe, we wanted friends. We had come out of a city (and a season in our life) where good friends were scarce or far away and we had begun to feel alone. We had each other, but for our emotional, mental and spiritual well-being, we needed more.
We found God’s House nine months after we moved to Orlando. Ironically, it was a place that a friend from Tampa had told us about several months before and it was right around the corner from where we lived. Somehow, our minds didn’t remember it and that’s why it took visiting several other churches (many much farther away) to help us appreciate what God had for us right under our noses.
And, you know what? We found friends.
But, it took time and lots of effort, even in the most perfect of situations. Like my husband tenderly reminds me, “To have friends, you have to show yourself friendly.” So, I set out to be just that. Learning to be vulnerable, honest and genuine has its risks, but it also has precious rewards.
Then, one day, I realized a short-cut! One of the quickest ways I found to meeting people was by getting involved. No matter the group dynamic, there’s this misconception that we have to wait until we’ve met a lot of folks before we can get involved. But, on the contrary, I found that by serving, I actually got to meet and know a lot of people, many of whom I hadn’t met yet in the months that I had been coming to church. Some days, with all of the hugs and greetings I get, I even feel like “the most popular girl in school,” but I know there are many others there that must feel like I do!
Today, I feel like I’m taking responsibility in “my” church and these people are truly my family. Not only am I an important part of making it productive, strong and fruitful, it is making me grow in those areas as well.
On September 16, 2008, my husband and I are celebrating our one year anniversary at God’s House. In the course of this very short year, we’ve found so many good, loving people who genuinely care for us, we’ve discovered some of Orlando’s secret gems and hot-spots for fun and, most importantly, we’ve put down roots and picked up responsibilities into a larger purpose beyond ourselves. That is, the lives of the people around us and the goodness of God’s love for them.
It’s good to be home!
- Thao

Favorite product I've designed:
Lifes Canvas Collection Biggie

Working on this kit was a true labor of love. Collections take a lot out of me, but this particular one challenged me in numerous ways. For several months now, I’ve wanted to incorporate more of my drawing abilities into my digital scrapbooking collections. However, many internal obstacles held me back. But, after several practice sessions, liberating revelations about myself, and key words of encouragements from Scrap Girls’ very own Creative Director, Valerie Randall, I learned to let loose and be myself. Hopefully, Life’s Canvas is the first of many successful drawing experiments that I will be able to share with you all.

Scrap Girls Club Comments |
These comments were made by our great Scrap Girls customers and friends about Melissa Renfro's September Club, Well Loved, which is only available as a group with the club's great savings through tomorrow!
The enthusiasm surrounding the release of a new kit is contagious, and we wanted all of our newsletter readers to share in the excitement! Come see what it's about on our message board as we get ready to release our new October Club Wednesday!

I think every club member is going to LOVE you as much as I do right now because your club kit is fantastically amazing! I love the colors and the embellishments. I can just see this becoming one of my “go to” collections! It is fabulous! Thank you!

I love you, too, Melissa! This kit is right up my alley! I love the blues, the rusty stars, the word art, the browns... everything! THANK YOU!

Wonderful kit! I absolutely adore the color scheme!

It is exactly what I needed and exactly what I would be hunting for in the boutique! Well Loved is simply beautiful!

I'm tapping my toe and twiddling my thumbs until my download link comes in.

Oh, Melissa, this collection is amazing! All of the blues and browns... love it!

Same here! I love the colors, the embellishments - everything about this collection. What a great combination! It's going to be hard to wait another day for the download now that I've seen it. Thank you.

Melissa, how did you get into my head and figure out the PERFECT kit for me? Love it, love it, love it!

I know exactly what you mean... how do they do it?
I don't know how I'm going to wait until tomorrow to download it! I have Alex in preschool; Tyler is not going because he starts Kindergarten on Thursday. I'm used to being alone on Tuesdays! I'm going to enjoy my time with him though. My baby's starting school this week! It's going to be so quiet with only one kid in the mornings. Wait! That means lots of time to scrap! Woohoo! Can't wait to get this collection!

I LOVE the collection, Melissa! Perfect in every way. Thank you!

I agree with everyone. I really like the boy layout example, too. Sometimes, I struggle with pages for my son, but I think this kit will be a great fit for both my son and my daughter.

Wow... wow... WOW! This kit is amazing, Melissa! I couldn't resist any longer and joined the club and I'm so excited! I don't know where to start! There are so many beautiful papers and embellishments! What a great job you have done here! I love it!

Well Loved is obviously well loved! This is a great kit!

When I saw this kit, I seriously started jumping up and down with excitement! This is simply gorgeous! I love the rusty shapes - such a perfect kit for the fall! I need to scrapbook something - my creativity juices are flowing just LOOKING at the preview for this kit! Thanks Melissa!

Melissa, what an awesome kit! Thank you! I've got it downloaded and filed. Now, to get those creative juices flowing. With this kit it will be easy!

From the club's creator, Melissa: Thanks guys! I am so glad you like it. I just wanted to share all of my favorite things to scrap with and I had so much fun putting this together. I can't wait to see some layouts. I am always amazed by your creativity. |

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
