Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Customer Muse: Lost and Found in Translation

Growing up, I didn’t have the typical “daddy’s girl” relationship with my father. Communication flowed from my father through my mother and then on to me. The response passed from me to my mother and on to my father. My father didn’t give me hugs or tuck me in bed at night. He didn’t tell me that he loved me or that I was special. The one thing that he did tell me and tells me to this day (even though I’ll be 46 in a matter of days) is to “be good” or “behave.”

We live in different states now, so I don’t get to see my father as much as I would like to. He never calls me. I have to do the calling if I want to talk to him.

I guess the whole “be good” and “behave” thing really didn’t sink in until many years later when I caught myself saying the same thing. I would tell my dogs to “behave” or “be good” when I left the house instead of saying, “I love you,” like I meant to. Where did this come from?

Now that I am grown up, I realize that my father was and is unable to express himself in the way that I would like. That does not mean that he doesn’t love me. He is a prisoner to his upbringing, much as I am to mine. He showed his love the way that he was taught, by working hard and providing for my brothers and me. We had a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and food in our stomachs. He took us camping and was in Indian Guides with my brothers. We weren’t rich, but we never lacked for anything.

After all these years, I realize that my father was telling me that he loved me when he said to “behave” or to “be good.” It took me a while, but I figured out the translation.

Scrap Girls is the only place where I've found it!

I stumbled upon Scrap Girls over a year ago and haven't looked back since. There is always something new to learn in every newsletter and I always find something I just can't live without. I can't place an order buying just one thing (as my husband frequently reminds me when we get our credit card statement). I'm addicted to Scrap Girls.

I just had to say WOWIE, YAHOO and OH MY GOSH! I was reading the newsletter yesterday morning - just like I do every morning – it is the first thing I do when I get up and go to the computer in my office (formerly my daughter’s bedroom). Every morning it is the same routine - still in my pj's, have not had breakfast, read the newsletter, save layouts to my folder “Favorites from Scrap Girls,” save any tutorials to my folder “Lessons From Scrap Girls,” see if any new classes are mentioned and download the freebie.

Well, one thing was not the same as every morning. As I scrolled down through the newsletter, there was a layout of MINE! I couldn’t believe it. Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, so I called for him to come see something... a kind of birthday present. I think he was very proud and the layout was part of the engagement scrapbook I had given my daughter the previous Saturday, just before her wedding. It is a very special layout. (Even though they are all special.)

Thank you so much Scrap Girls. You have given me so much: improved my knowledge and skills in Photoshop and photography, ways to look at the world (both the big picture and the small things in life), friends and support from all around the world, and now this little bit of recognition. Again, a big WOWIE and a big THANK YOU.

Come join Pat (PBarnes) for the Quote Challenge Crop! Including a quote on your layout can be a touching and meaningful addition, especially if you use the quote to create your own word art.

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will even have a layout with a Word Art example. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout!

September Board Game: Guess that Scrap Girl!

It's Back-to-School time and with it come memories of our own childhood. What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you dream big? This month, join us on the Message Board for a game of "Guess that ScrapGirl!" and find out what our ScrapGirls team members dreamed of becoming when they were little girls.

Every day during the month of September, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a school-aged photo of one of the ScrapGirls team members. Identify the team member and then create and keep an ongoing list with your answers on it, and send your completed list to [email protected] no later than midnight October 2nd. (You can find current photos of all team members in the About Us section of the ScrapGirls home page.)

Everyone who correctly identifies all 30 team members will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates! Correctly identify 20+ team members and be entered in a drawing for one of two $5 Gift Certificates! Identify 10+ and be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates!

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.).
