“Rule the School” layout by Julie Moberly

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I created each 4x6 card individually, and then dragged them onto a 12x12 blank file. I resized them slightly and arranged them to my liking. Finally, I placed the page protector embellishment on top.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Since the embellishments are set against a rich red background paper, I used a heavy drop shadow from Sarah Batdorf’s ScrapSimple Tools Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 (setting: gray, large) for more depth. I also applied a “simple outer glow” to the extracted photo.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

“ABC Book” layout by Christy VanderWall

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Since I didn’t have any back to school photos to scrap for this layout, I decided to do a back to school project. I used Angela Blanchard’s beautiful products to create an ABC book for my daughter to practice learning to write. I found two fonts online called ‘Print Clearly’ and ‘Penmanship Print’ that allowed me to make the words similar to the worksheets you do in school where you trace the letters. Each page of the book has a bird, flower or butterfly corresponding to the letter of the alphabet.
I printed the pages, adhered the fronts and backs together and had them laminated. My daughter can use a dry erase marker on them and easily wipe them clean to use them over and over again. The cover was created using the Feathered Friends Collection, printed on cardstock, adhered to chipboard and finished with Mod-Podge.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get the look of a torn piece of notebook paper, I took one of the strips from Thao’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Hodgepodge Collage Biggie and applied one of the styles from Syndee’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: School Papers 6301.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

“Moments to Remember” layout by Janine Buckles

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Instead of using the date marker that came with Ariadna’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Date Seals, I used the “apple” brush from Amanda’s Brush Set: School Time Doodle Biggie. Now my date, the number 7, is circled with a cute apple in keeping with my theme!
If you aren’t hooked on using brushes yet, there are some great tutorials to get you started in the Scrap Girls University. Just look for the Digital Brushes chapter!

Journaling: I remember thinking on the first day of school how brave we were; neither one of us cried. Everyday, before you stepped through the classroom door, you turned around and you waved goodbye. Then, one day, a couple of weeks into school, you ran into the classroom, excited to see your friends and you didn’t turn around. I got into the car and wept. I didn’t feel so brave that day.

“Knowledge is Power” layout by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to tuck the disc section of Angela Blanchard’s Feathered Friends Collection Tag behind her Heraldic Crest Collection Biggie Embellishment and have the knot ends hanging in front, I gave the tag a layer mask. I then used my paintbrush, making sure the foreground colour was black, and “erased” the part of the disc that I wanted to appear “tucked behind.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements CS3

Journaling: Every year you have school photos and every year so far, we have not been happy with the results. FINALLY, this year we hit the jackpot with both of your photos. We are so happy with these two gorgeous images; they show just how much the two of you have grown. We want you both to have the best education we can possibly give you. Knowledge is most definitely power and the more you know, the more you will be able to make informed and wise decisions in your lives. We hope that we are instilling in you a love of learning that will be with you all of your lives. We are so very proud of the two of you and wish you continued success in all of your future studies.

Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than two weeks until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published! We also have special sponsors Carbonite in on this, too.
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have FIVE spots left! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

Life Muses by Ro: In the Barnyard |

Hen 1: I saw you.
Rooster: Saw me what?
Hen 1: Staring at the new chick. Don’t try to hide it.
Rooster: Who? Me? My dear, you’ve got it all wrong. I wasn’t staring at her. I was watching her eat.
Hen 1: (Rolls eyes)
Rooster: Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed! She has an unusual method of swallowing. She rolls her head around three times and dances back and forth in a line before she eats a bite.
Hen 1: Oh, that... Yes, I’ve seen it. That’s how she exercises. She told me that dancing keeps her slim.
Rooster: Now that you mention it, she is rather thin. She is missing that nice - oh, how shall I say it delicately - puffiness below her neck.
Hen 1: Everyone looks slimmer in black. But, she wants to be thin because she thinks that if she is skinny, she will be the very first hen to live until she’s ninety.
Rooster: Maybe she’s on to something. Do you think she would give us dancing lessons?
Hen 1: I suppose so.
Rooster: What does she call that particular move she is doing now? Do you know?
Hen 1: She calls it the Funky Chicken.
Rooster: I like it. Funky... funky... I’m getting funky, funky, funky. Woohoo! Yeah baby. I’m getting down with the “funky chicken.”
Hen 1: Emmmm... Maybe you ought to consider lifting weights.

Note from Ro: I’m attempting to lose some “puffiness” myself. Maybe I’ll follow the example of the chicken and dance while I eat. Anybody see my iPod?
Funky!

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Slicing a Photo to Create Visual Interest |
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.
Do you want a quick and easy way to add visual drama to your star photo? Try “cutting” it into slices, tilting them slightly and adding drop shadows. It is easy. Here’s how to do it.
First, you can use a variety of photos for this digital scrapbooking technique. They can be close-up face shots, full body shots, groups, or even scenery/nature shots. The trick is to be sure that there are a couple of good areas where the photo can be “cut” that won’t ruin or unreasonably distort the photo. For example, you obviously don’t want to cut through the center of a face, although, the forehead or cheek can definitely be an option. (See examples of “cutting” a variety of photos below.)

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

To begin, open your chosen photo and drag it onto your 12x12 layout document. I like to make “sliced” photos large and prominent on the page to encourage a dramatic effect. Go ahead and enlarge your photo if it is too small.

Select your Rectangular Marquee Tool from your Tools Palette and then drag and select the first area that you want to cut off. Next, go to Edit> Cut and then Edit> Paste. You can then click and drag the piece back to its approximate location. Repeat these steps for the number of cuts you have chosen to make.
TIP: When cutting the photo into sections, it is generally the most visually appealing to make each piece a different size.

Now we are going to add a white “photo edge” border around each piece of the photo. To do this, click on the layer of your first piece and go to Select> Load Selection. This will select the entire perimeter of the first piece. Then go to Select> Modify> Expand. I typically set the expansion to about 35 pixels, but you can adjust to your desired border width. Now, you will see that the selected area is larger than your actual photo piece.

Move over to your Layers Palette and create a new layer. Once you have your new layer, click on the foreground color on the color picker icon and select white.

Click on the Paint Bucket from your Tools Palette, place it inside your selected area on the layout and click once to drop the white paint inside that area. Yes, your photo will disappear momentarily! Don’t panic. Go back to your Layers Palette and click and hold the layer you just dumped paint on and drag it one layer down so that it falls under your photo layer. Your photo should now appear on top of the white border.
Now, you will want to Ctrl+Select the photo layer and border layer and merge them together (click on the drop-down list in the upper right-hand corner of the Layers Palette and you will find “Merge Layers” towards the bottom). Make sure it only merges the two layers you have selected and not all of the layers.

Repeat this process for each photo piece. Once all of your photos have white borders, click on each one and rotate them to slightly different angles. To do this, go to Edit> Transform> Rotate and your photo section will be selected and you will get a curled arrow that will allow you to click, hold and turn your photo.
After each piece is rotated to your desired location, we can add the drop shadows. To do this, double-click on the layer of your first photo piece and a Layer Style box will pop up. Click on the Drop Shadow box. You can then play around with the Opacity, Angle, Distance, Spread, Size and Color of the drop shadow you would like to create. You can instantly see the changes being made to your drop shadow as long as the “Preview” box on the right side is checked.
Once you have a drop shadow that you like, I recommend jotting down the settings you have created on a scrap of paper so you can then go through and add the exact same drop shadow settings to all of your other photo pieces. Now that your photo is done, you can add all of your other elements to your layout.

Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
