Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than 28 days until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published!
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have FIVE spots left! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

Life Muses by Ro: Showered with Friendship |
As I have already discussed, I recently went to Arizona for some desperately needed R&R. As a quick review, I asked our wonderful message board members to remember me in their prayers. They did so and I found the perfect spot that addressed all of my needs and desires. I came home happy and renewed.
When I arrived, I discovered a large pile of mail sitting in my office. My first thought was, “Oh no... we received a whole bunch of mail-in orders that didn’t get taken care of!” I felt sick just thinking about it.
But, then I realized that we’ve only received about ten mail-in orders during our entire history... The stack was too large for that.
Upon further investigation, I was stunned to realize that my Scrap Girls friends had decided to shower me with cards and well wishes while I was away. They wanted me to come home to a big pile-o-love. I was humbled, honored, amazed and touched beyond the ability to express.
That night, I climbed into bed with my pile-o-love and began opening them. I smiled at them, laughed and went, “Oooooo.... Ahhhh.... Ohhhhh!” as I made my way through the stack.
I had received cards, small gifts, a CD (it happened to be one that I had wished for without telling anyone that I wanted it!), and a beautiful mini-album created by Christy VanderWall, containing photos of all of the Scrap Girls team members.
Shortly afterwards, I took a photo of the mail I’d received. Surprisingly, I continued to receive mail. In fact, I received a postcard from a member just last week!
I don’t know why I have ended up in the middle of such wonderful people, but I just have to say that I’m grateful beyond measure. You are friends to me. I consider you a family member as soon as you sign up to read our newsletter or as soon as you make your first purchase. I pray for you everyday, hoping that things go well for you, hoping that any problems are smoothed out, and ask the Lord to bless you for being so kind to us. I worry about all of you when I hear about disasters in the world. I am concerned for you as I read about the problems everyone is facing right now. I pray that if you are struggling, you’ll keep going and trying, believing that “this, too, shall pass.”
Thank you, everyone, who has written me, emailed me or thought about me as I worked to get myself back on track. I appreciate your kindnesses so very, very much.
I am forever, humbly, your servant.
- Ro

This is just some of the mail I’ve received!

Best of the Message Board |
Question: Can I change the size and/or color of a brush?
Answer 1: You sure can. What program are you using?
Response 1: Oops! Forgot to add that. I'm using PSE6.
Answer 2: When you've picked your Brush Tool, there should be a tool bar up at the top (right underneath the main toolbar). It has different menus to choose which brush you use and the size.
To change the color, you can change the foreground color down in the color picker at the bottom left.
Answer 3: Another quick way to change your brush size is to use the bracket keys, located below your + and - keys. The right bracket makes the brush bigger and the left one makes it smaller. The nice part about that is if you are trying to fit a brush in a certain space you don't have to move your mouse to go up and use the slider. The brush will stay put and enlarge or shrink when you hit the bracket keys and will do it in small increments.
Response Question: Thanks! Now, can you move a brushed image once you've “stamped” it?
Answer 4: Yes, as long as you stamp the brush on its own layer, you can move the image wherever you would like on the page. (If you stamp on the same layer as another object, you will be moving both objects at the same time.)
Answer 5: You can move it/change color/change size, etc. after stamping IF you stamp it on its own layer. It you've stamped it on an existing layer, any changes will affect the whole layer. I always stamp on a separate layer, because, if I don't, I end up regretting it!
Response Question 2: To stamp on its own layer, do you have to create a new layer? How do you drag that onto the layout? Thanks.
Answer 6: You can create a new layer in your layout. Shift+Ctrl+N in Photoshop. A lot of the shortcuts are the same for PSE. There is also a little icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette.
Answer 7: In PSE, the New Layer icon is at the top of the Layers Palette instead of at the bottom.
Response 2: Thanks - it seems to be working!
Answer 8: Since you are getting interested in brushes, I would highly recommend buying Shalae's Mastering Brushes eBook. There is one for PS and PSE. The book will take you beyond the basics of brushes and has amazing examples. You will look at brushes in a completely different light afterwards!

Question: I have the following - Life Books and Corrugated Papers - and I cannot understand how to get them to look the way you guys do in the samples. I can use the other paper templates, but these do not work for me. I have read and re-read the instructions. What am I missing? I lost most of my corrugated texture and I had to really fade to get the book to show the pages through. Thanks.
Answer 1: Are you using PSE or PS? You can layer your paper over the template, apply a clipping mask, then scroll through the Blend Modes to get the look you want, while keeping the template layer at “Normal” Blend Mode, 100% Opacity. I know you can work with Blend Modes in PSP, but I'm not exactly sure how to achieve the clipping mask in that program. You could also try colorizing, adding brush work, etc. Hope that helps. If not, I'm sure someone will come along soon with some suggestions!
Response: Sorry, I am using PSCS3. I have tried a clipping mask and nothing happens. I have tried “Overlay,” but it is too light. I have looked through the University. Can someone please tell me how to do this? Or maybe I can't add papers, maybe it is only colors. Thanks guys!
Answer 2: Try applying the clipping mask, using “Overlay” or “Soft Light” Blend Modes. Then, making sure your template layer is active, adjust the brightness/contrast (of the template). That will in turn adjust the color.

Question: How do you combine two papers together where they look like one sheet? How do you make a photo and word art blend into the background paper so that it looks like it is the background paper? I am using ACDSee Photo Editor and I also have PSE 6.
Answer: You use Blend Modes. Layer one paper (or photo) directly over the other and, with the top one selected, scroll through the Blend Modes until you get a look you like. You can adjust the Opacity of the layers as well for even more variations.
Response: Thank you so much. I went and did what you said and it worked! I learned something new today.

Question: I have a layered template that you fill with different papers and there are layers for the photos. I am new to Photoshop Elements 6 and have purchased the Scrap Girls Secrets Revealed, but there is nothing on this topic there. If anyone can direct me to a tutorial for using the templates in Photoshop Elements 6 I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
Answer: There are quite a few digital layout template tutorials in the Scrap Girls University: Digital Scrapbooking with ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. If you need more specific help with a particular template, let us know which one you are working with. There are several basic tutorials. Try this one: Using ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates in Digital Scrapbooking or this: Using Clipping Masks with ScrapSimple Digital Scrapbooking Layout Templates.
These were written before the layout templates came with the layered PSD file, which is much faster to work with. Now you can drag all of the layers of the template onto your new file at once. In the Layers Palette, click on the top layer, hold down the Shift key and click on the bottom layer. You can then use the Move Tool to drag the layers straight from the Layers Palette onto your new blank page. Hope that helps you some. |

Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
