“Special” layout by Kara Swanson

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To blend my journaling into the background paper for a muted effect, I just lowered the Opacity of the journal layer to 22%.

“Perfect Smiles” layout by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To ‘tuck’ the photo corner ‘under’ the paper fold, I first gave the photo layer a layer mask. I then reduced the Opacity of the photo frame so I could see the area underneath which would act as my guide to ‘erasing’ the frame. I clicked on the Eraser Tool, chose an appropriate-sized brush and then ‘erased’ the area that I wanted removed from the photo. Once I was happy with the result, I raised the Opacity of the photo frame back to 100% and the photo now looks as if it is tucked under the paper fold.

“P Is for Pout” layout by Kelly Favor-Chronister

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To give my layout a more cohesive look, I used Valerie Randall’s ScrapSimple Type Paths: Shapes 2101 in place of the standard days, months, and years provided in Brandy Murry’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Date Wheel. I typed using the same font I used for part of the title and for my journaling (Amanda McGee’s Happy Font). I also used the same type path to create the curve for the “is for” part of the title. These type paths are great for PSE where you cannot create your own text on a path!

“Midsommar” layout by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the background, I used two papers: the green-blue paper from Thao Cosgrove’s Pretty Primavera Collection Biggie and on top, the folded paper from Melissa Renfro’s Little One Collection. I changed the Blend Mode of the last one to “Multiply.” To make the folds look more realistic, I duplicated the green-blue paper four times to have one paper for each part of the fold. I rotated and moved the paper layers with the Move Tool (Ctrl+T) and applied a layer mask on each one to leave only the fold visible. To give it a final touch and a nice balance to the layout, I changed the color of the folded back with Image> Adjustments> Color Variations.

“Cater-Pickles” layout by Christy VanderWall

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the leaves on the vines appear like they are curling off the page, I first applied a regular drop shadow to them. I then put the shadow on its own layer by using Layer> Layer Style> Create Layer in CS3. With the shadow layer selected, using the free transform option (Ctrl-T) and holding the Ctrl key, I reshaped the shadow by dragging the corner handles until it had the shape desired. I also lowered the Opacity of the shadow layer to about 65%.

Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than 28 days until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published!
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have FIVE spots left! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

A Designers Life: Syndee Nuckles |
A Perfect Day
Having just recently moved from the hot California desert to the more temperate city of San Jose, I have felt excited, overwhelmed, hopeful, adventurous, unsure, happy, small, creative, and more. All of these feelings make me feel alive and full of possibilities.
Over the past seven weeks, we have been visiting the same spots, creating a sense of comfort and familiarity. But, yesterday, we headed out the door into some uncharted territories. We ended up having a perfect day!
Okay, I know there is no such thing as “perfect,” but in my book, yesterday was about as perfect as it gets! (That is, even with the parking ticket we acquired outside of the library!) It felt great to just shrug away the ticket and not let it ruin our day. I will gladly pay the $28 fee for such a perfect day.
The day started early for me at 8:15 a.m. You may have heard me ramble on about my long relationship with insomnia before. Well, for some reason, after only four hours of sleep, my mind decided it was time to wake up! Now, my body was not happy about this, but what’s a girl to do? I have learned to embrace my insomnia, since it doesn’t look like it will be letting up any time soon.
My hubby and I decided to venture out to the Farmer’s Market, which, to our delight, is a mere mile away. We were greeted by sunshine and a dozen or so vendors scattered around a palm tree-filled park. Right, smack in the middle is a fountain. I don’t know what it is about fountains, but I just love them! There was a band playing at one end and, at the other end, a man on a bench playing a violin. And, this was FREE!
We bought fresh cut flowers, organic fruits and vegetables, and some delicious organic baked goods. It has been a long time since we were able to just sit and be. We could have stayed there all day, but it was time to grab a bite to eat and head home.
The kids ushered us in at the door. We came inside, laden with canvas bags full of our morning adventure. You couldn’t help but see the delight on their faces. There is a bit of magic that surrounds a bunch of just-plucked carrots with stems attached and a dusting of dirt! I am feeling a bit like we live in Shangri-la.
Later, the kids decided that they would like to go to the “big” library on the SJSU campus. Now, that is one huge library. I think I counted six floors! It is truly a beauty! And, as if the day couldn’t get any better, they happened to be having a book sale.
Now, if you know my kids at all, you know that they love books! They eat, sleep and breathe books. They would rather have books than clothes (which, if you have or have had teenage daughters, you know that is strange)! Who doesn’t love a bag of books for five dollars? Two bags later, we were now ready to peruse the library, which was a bit beyond overwhelming.
We left with several armloads of borrowed treasures. My seven-year-old son even checked out a book on Shirley Temple. (He is very picky about his book selections.) I left with some books on container gardening and cooking. With a sigh, it was time to head home.
It’s a pretty common occurrence in our house to have the kids put on a “Show and Tell” with the spoils of our outings. It was fun to have a book show and see what everyone picked out. Then, I headed off for a much-needed nap.
When it was time to sit down in front of my computer and do some digital scrapbooking, I was content, refreshed and inspired! The amazing thing is that this perfect day taught me something. (Or, should I say, it reminded me of something?) It’s the simple things, the things we take for granted, that matter the most.
The best thing about this day was that it renewed my spirit and taught me to stop and smell the carrots!
Happy carrots!
- Syndee

Favorite product I've designed:
Faded Beauty Collection Mini

This was one of those collections that I had sketched out in my mind several weeks before actually designing it. Sometimes, my work has to sit with me for a while before it’s ready. I really love how it is soft and dreamlike.

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
