Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than 28 days until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
Some of our other special guest speakers include April Anderton and Lynda Angelastro from Digital Scrapbooking Magazine. They will be giving pointers on how to get published!
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, April and Lynda, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have SIX spots left! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

Life Muses by Ro: Leashed |
Molly did not like her leash. When I first attached it to her collar, she chewed, pulled and thrashed around as if she had just eaten a Mexican dancing bean. When I picked it up to escort her across the yard, she looked at me as if I was the cruelest human she had ever met.
It was hard to look at her sad, confused eyes and not give in to her wishes. It would have been so easy to allow her off the leash and allow her to run wildly around the yard. It’s what she wanted. She believed it was best to be in control of herself, her environment, and the humans in her world.
However, I knew that if I gave in to her, she would end up being an unhappy dog. Molly has to learn that I am her master – the ‘dominate dog’ of the house. She has to learn to obey me instantly. She has to learn to come when called, to relieve herself outside, and to obey my commands. And so, Molly has to learn that the leash can be a positive thing in her life.
As I watched her strain against the leash, I realized that Molly and I aren’t that different. It is not uncommon for me to thrash about when facing problems. I often long to run free, unfettered by responsibilities. But, this wouldn’t be good for me and Heavenly Father knows it. Instead of giving up on me, He patiently leads me along. He works with me until I see what I must do. He gives me rules and shows me why it is in my best interest to follow them without question.
It would be so easy for Heavenly Father to let me run off my leash with no consequences when I make mistakes, but He loves me too much for that. He schools me, guides me, and teaches me, and the more I learn about Him, the happier I am that I know my Master.
Someday, Molly will learn to obey me without question. I’m not going to give up until she does. She’s worth it.
It’s quite comforting to know that my Master thinks I’m worth it, too.
- Ro

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Maximizing ScrapSimple Digital Layout Template Album Sets |
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.
Have you ever bought a set of digital scrapbooking layout templates? If you haven’t, then I hope this tutorial will convince you to give them a try and see what you’ve been missing. When I first started digital scrapping, I wanted to do everything myself. Once I gave layout templates a try, though, a whole new world opened up to me. I like to think that they are to a digital scrapper what a crock-pot is to a busy mom: a convenient way to prepare something wonderful with a lot of the work already done for you!
Although there are many reasons to love digital layout templates, I want to show you how versatile they can be. I’m going to illustrate this using my ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates – Layered: Photo Book 1. These templates were specifically designed to be used in the creation of a memory book that features photos and stories, but you could also try these suggestions with any set of layout templates.
ROTATE IT

Simply rotating the templates will give you lots of additional options. Here is my #2 template.

And here’s a page that was created after rotating the template 180 degrees.

By rotating the template plus or minus 90 degrees, you would end up with pages with big left or right margins rather than a big top or bottom margin. For example, this double-page spread was created by rotating the same template 90 degrees to the left.
This brings me to the subject of flipping a template.
FLIP IT
If I want to expand a template to a double-page spread like I did above, begin by duplicating the template, flipping the duplicate horizontally and then sliding it into place. (Don’t forget to double the size of your canvas to accommodate both pages!)

Here is another example of creating a double-page spread from a single template (#9 from the Photo Book 1 set). As you can see, I use the two stacked photo blocks for the interior of the spread, which has now created two horizontal photo blocks stretching across the book.

This way would work, too. Using the tall vertical half of the page as the middle creates a single, square canvas.
As you can see from both of these examples, doubling and flipping your templates presents you with many different looks and choices: headings, accents and photo blocks can all be adjusted or removed entirely for a host of design options.
MIX IT UP

Although they are designed to Shift+Click into a specific place, most of the elements in a layout template can usually be moved wherever you want them to go.

If you look closely at the layout above, you’ll see that I simply rotated the template 180 degrees to get the basic look I wanted. Then, instead of using the date and month in the border as the original was designed, I moved those elements onto the main photo for extra emphasis. Finally, I adjusted the margins of the text box to make it wider and shorter than the original.
One final note: a very important thing to keep in mind when creating pages for a book is the placement of any photos that may cross your binding. As shown in these screenshots, you can use the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Tabbed Books to help you visualize whether the binding of a book will affect any photos that extend across the gutter.
I hope that these examples have inspired you to take a second look at digital layout templates. With much of the work already completed for you, they can free you up to design a beautifully coordinated book in record time. Best of all, as long as you stay within your chosen set of layout templates, you are virtually assured that no matter what you do with them, all of your pages will still end up coordinating with one another. This is truly the power and beauty behind digital layout templates; so go get some and have fun!

It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you. |
