Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information!

It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than 28 days until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!

One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:

Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Life Muses by Ro: Makeover

She came into my office and caught me trying to take photos of myself for a project I’m working on.

“Do you want something?”

She wrinkled her nose.

“What’s wrong?”

“Can I give you a makeover, Mom? Please? Let me do your hair, makeup, everything? I’ll make you look pretty.”

“I’m almost 51 years old.”

“So?”

I sighed. “You know what? I look just like you do in my head. I used to look like you and that’s what I still feel like I’m supposed to look like. And then, I get a load of myself in the mirror and wonder who that fat, old broad is.”

“Mom! Stop that!” She sighed. “You need more confidence in yourself. That’s your problem.”

“Confidence is not going to make me 18 again, Julianne.”

“Come on, Mom. Let me make you over.”

I could see that she was never going to give up. “Just don’t put elastics all over my head like last time,” I sighed.

She rolled her eyes. “I was just a kid and didn’t know how to do hair. I do now.”

She took me into the bathroom, fired up the curling iron and brought forth her bag of mysteries. “I’m going to do your makeup just like I do mine.” She studied me carefully. “You need your eyebrows done. Don’t you ever do them?”

My face turned red. “They are blond. I am blind. I can’t see what I’m doing.”

She smiled. “No problem.” The torture began and the torturer chatted away. I learned that she regularly does all of her friends' eyebrows – even her male friends. Who knew?

Next, she pulled out her black eyeliner. I gulped. “I’ve never worn that in my life.”

She painted away on the lids, stood back and examined her work. “It’s kind of hard to get the lines straight,” she muttered.

“You mean, it’s hard to get the lines straight when there are wrinkles,” I said.

She blushed but didn’t deny the truth as she went back to work, prodding and pulling and pushing so hard that I winced. “Ow! Don’t poke my eyes out!”

She sighed again. “It’s much harder to do someone else’s makeup.”

Next, she pulled out her bronzer and held it up before me. “You need this,” she said sternly. “You are pale and this will make you look better.”

“I already have makeup on.”

“I know that, Mom,” she said patiently as she brushed the bronzer here and there. “You need to use bronzer, too.”

Next, she worked on my hairdo. She brushed my hair forward (a new direction for me), curled it, fluffed it and then pulled out the serious equipment: Pomade. “Please don’t make my hair look like a bowling ball,” I squirmed.

“It doesn’t, Mom. Trust me. You look hot.”

She stood me up and made me look in the mirror. I gasped when I saw myself. “You look hot,” she repeated.

She took me out to the garage for my husband to see. “Mom looks hot,” she said. Gary nodded, “You look hot,” he agreed.

Triumphantly, she left the garage. I whispered, “I look like I belong in a movie about the 70’s.”

“It’s the eyebrows,” he said. “They are a little dark. But, you look hot.”

I smiled at him. “I always look hot to you, don’t I?”

He smiled back. “Yep.”

Themed Thoughts: Marching Band

When I think about marching bands, I am immediately transported back to those cool fall Friday nights in New Mexico where I played in the marching band. One of my favorite memories was the competitions - the rich colors, pageantry, and plumes. I was recently searching through the boutique looking for some things to help me scrapbook some of these memories - and for my husband - a band member at a rival school!

First - I wanted to look for some papers that had the rich color of pageantry that is so familiar with Marching Bands. Here is what I found:

For this project - I really didn’t find what I was looking for in the collections, so the challenge was really thinking outside the box and pulling together some wonderful pieces to create the layout. My idea stemmed from Angie Briggs’s Scrap Simple Transparency Overlays: Urban Living, which features a free flowing Treble Cleft.

Next I went to look for Brush Sets and Paper templates that would play on this theme and found:

What really pulls the Marching Band layout together is taking advantage of all the great Scrap Simple Styles! Try adding some glitter, glass beads or shiny metal to your layout.

When doing a marching band layout, I would recommend vibrant colors. There are so many collections that have great papers and can be combined with Scrap Simple Overlays that the possibilities for marching band layouts are endless! Here is what I came up with:

September Board Game: Guess that Scrap Girl!

It's Back-to-School time and with it come memories of our own childhood. What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you dream big? This month, join us on the Message Board for a game of "Guess that ScrapGirl!" and find out what our ScrapGirls team members dreamed of becoming when they were little girls.

Every day during the month of September, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a school-aged photo of one of the ScrapGirls team members. Identify the team member and then create and keep an ongoing list with your answers on it, and send your completed list to [email protected] no later than midnight October 2nd. (You can find current photos of all team members in the About Us section of the ScrapGirls home page.)

Everyone who correctly identifies all 30 team members will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates! Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected].
