Scrap Girls Convention - Digital Scrap Link Information! |
It's getting close now... can you believe there are less than 28 days until our Convention starts? The excitement is really building around our message board. We have some wonderful things lined up to share with you, and we're excited to tell you a bit about them here!
One of our special guest instructors will be none other than Nichole Van from nicholeV photography. She will be presenting, “Making Art Out of the Ordinary: Mastering Light, Location and Composition.” Here's a short description:
Ever wonder how those professional photographers manage to find such incredible locations? And how do they always get that amazing light in their photos? Wouldn’t it be fun to create art out of the everyday, ordinary things you see? Nichole will discuss how to assess and best photograph any given location and how to “see” and use natural light effectively, getting perfect light in your photos. She’ll also discuss how to compose artistic photographs based on principles of classic composition and then how to bring all these elements out when editing in Photoshop. Come learn how to create art out of your life!

Nichole has such wonderful photography skills, we know you'll be as excited as we are to have her come share her expertise with us!
If you'd like to come and learn from Nichole, in addition to all the other great things we have planned for you, hurry and sign up now! We only have SIX spots left! Stay tuned to hear more about our Convention! |

Customer Muse: Love/Hate Relationship |
Ever have a love/hate relationship? I have an ongoing one with my camera. She’s a fickle little lady. Oh, she can be counted on to be there for those milestones like birthdays, school plays and t-ball games, but she is rarely around for those breath-holding moments that flitter across my path.
Case in point: Yesterday, I was sitting in the garden enjoying the late summer breeze when directly in front of me flew a tiny iridescent hummingbird. In the split second before he reacted to the knowledge that I was there, I just froze and stared, drinking in the sight while holding my breath. After he flew off, I ran into the house to get the camera in case the hummingbird came back. Now that the camera was there, I was ready, but the hummingbird was gone for the day.
Today, after learning my lesson the day before, I made sure to take my camera for my drive to an appointment. I knew that this country drive could stir up something I’d want to capture with my camera because I routinely have seen herons and bemoaned the fact that I didn’t have a camera with me. The camera sat poised on the seat beside me, the lens cap off, ready at a moment’s notice. I didn’t have too long to wait. At the halfway point, a serene doe stepped from the edge of a cornfield and I was still about a quarter of a mile away with no one else in sight. The stage was set and all I needed to do was point and click. Simple, huh? You would think so, but this is my life we’re talking about... nothing is quite simple.
With my hand ready to switch the camera on, I discovered that it was already in the “on” position with a dark blank screen showing on my digital camera. Drat! A dead camera. I turned my attention back to the graceful doe and watched as she slipped back into the cornfield as silently as she came. The fact that I had missed my one chance bugged me for the next few miles so I picked up the camera to try and figure out what had happened. I have never put it away without turning it off. I flipped the switch and it came to life.
I have now come to this conclusion - I’m supposed to hold my breath and marvel at God’s creations as they are placed before me and just drink them in with a simple prayer of thanks. If some day I’m ever fortunate enough to finally get that picture, I’m sure it will pale next to the real thing, but I will have been lucky enough to see the original.
- Janice Hiser
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!
Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

What Customers Are Saying... |
I just have to write and let you know what an awesome website this is. I had put you in my favorites quite a while ago, before I started digital scrapping, just in case! When I was ready, there you were. I'm so addicted that the first thing I do everyday is check the site and usually spend more money.
I am in the process of doing heritage albums and have amassed a collection of papers, etc. Aside from the awesome collections and service, I love how you use the monthly kit and show designs using the kits. I have learned so much. It is not a question of exactly copying a design, but looking at the design and learning to use more (or less, as the case may be) and to get out of the box. I have a file box right by my computer with each kit name on a manila folder and then I put in the gallery or home page designs I print out each day for that kit. It gives me tremendous inspiration. I can't say enough.
I am now almost giving up hands-on scrapping. It is too expensive and time consuming. As I look at the thirty or so scrapbooks and the room they take up, I decided digital was the way to go. A year ago, you wouldn't have convinced me. I really feel the move to digital is a process. I tell everyone about digital and its pluses.
I now use an awesome software called Luma Pix by Photo Fusion. I came across it through one of the newsletters that I received and checked it out. It was only about $40. It does much of what Adobe does in a much easier way. I bought Adobe Elements 4 (you can see how old it is) and still can't figure it out and I'm fairly computer savvy. I have to make myself sit down and figure out how to use Adobe Elements enough so that I can use the templates, etc., that I've purchased from you. I pour over the directions and still don't get it. Somehow, I'm missing a step I need to have to go on.
When the pages are done, I upload to Shutterfly and make the 12 x 12 books and have a thin, reasonably priced album. I don't want so much stuff that down the road my family just throws it all out because it is too much to keep.
Boy, do I go on and on. I really wrote to applaud you and then went on about myself and my projects! My gift card suggestions will now be for Scrap Girls - no more Archivers store for me! Keep up the good work. Remember, your inspiration will last a lifetime for my family.

I am anxiously awaiting the new additions to the gallery. This is actually what starts the madness... First, I realize that it's Thursday! Yes, it is garbage day and the day to do other things, but the additions to the gallery stick out above all else. Second, I am doing other things, but I keep the What's New page open and hit refresh every so often and wonder, “Has anything changed?”
As things start being added, my Id and Super-ego have a battle... “Oh, how pretty. That would go great with....” Id says.
Super-ego replies, “But, you haven't even used this yet.”
Id stretches for a response, “But if I had this, I know that the other thing would get used.”
Super-ego, trying with everything she's got, “But you just spent XXX there last week - you really don't need to.”
Then Id finishes it off with, “Well, DH got this the other day and if we don't go out to eat, which as you say isn't good for us anyway, it won't hurt.”
Guess who wins? Id, every time. I have even tried to not go to the boutique for a week and then I get a newsletter with a pretty design in it. Then, the battle starts. This is my addiction. I was addicted to cigarettes and I quit that, but this is fun and not bad for you, so all is well....

When I opened your newsletter today and saw that my layout “Lost and Found” had been one of the Weekly Layout Winners, I was so excited. Scrap Girls is my favorite site and I love your newsletter. To see something of mine in it is just wonderful. To be honest, I have been very nervous about posting in the gallery because the quality of work is so good. I can't thank you enough for making me feel like I am just as good. You really made my day!

Thank you so much. You know, I tell you every time, but Scrap Girls really means the world to me. Outside of my family, you all are the first thing and people I think of everyday. I prayed for you today, too. Thank you, thank you.

Oh my goodness! I was so blown away to be scrolling down the page only to find my layout there as a winner! This really has made my day! Thank you for choosing it and I just want to let you know that Ro has made it so easy for me to learn to digi scrap with her Secrets series. I look forward to hearing from you. |

If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
