Customer Muse: Listen

I love the hum of my bike tires on the concrete path as I zip along. The sound lets me know that I am outside, doing something that is good for me, getting fresh air and exercise. I love to hear how the pitch of the hum rises as I go faster along a flat section of trail or down a slope and lowers as I slow on an incline.

When I ride into the wind, the noise rushing past my ears drowns out the pleasant hum of the tires. It can become the only noise I hear if the wind is strong enough. A good sound from the wind though, is the rustling of the leaves of the huge cottonwood trees that stand along the banks of the creek that the trail follows. That sound brings back happy memories of our weekend cabin when I was growing up. We had tall cottonwood in the yard that was said to be over 100 years old.

I try to listen beyond the sounds closest to me. The crickets were in full voice this cool summer morning. Bird songs of a dozen or more species rang across the creek – the many-note song of the robin and the quick chit-chit of the sparrow. My favorite is the trill of the red-winged blackbirds that inhabit these environs.

Most of the creek moves along its course quietly, but there are areas where it runs over rocks in its bed with the pleasant sound of rushing and tumbling water. It’s curious that it is a sound with almost universal appeal.

Not all of the sounds I hear along my ride are those of nature. There is the noise of cars along the busy streets that the trail passes under. I hear the intrusive ding, ding, ding of a piece of heavy machinery as it goes about its construction work. It reminds me of how lucky I am to be at a point in my life where I do not have to go to a job every day. I hear the crunch of gravel as a car turns into the parking lot of the gravel company next to the trail and the clang of metal on metal from the salvage yard behind the corrugated steel fence.

I love the cheery “hello” or quick “morning” from my fellow travelers headed the opposite way on the trail. Not all reply to my offered greeting, but most do. We share this time and this space. We might as well be friendly.

There are so many things for us to hear if we listen. Sometimes, it’s hard to hear the sounds of life over the noise of the world.

University Updates

A Month of Memories: Remembering the Moments

One of my favorite things about teaching adult learners is that they always have such varied and distinct experiences to share. This is very evident in Scrap Girls classes with participants from different geographical locations and diverse paths to their common love of digital scrapping.

Recently, we celebrated some of the every day moments of our lives with a 30-day challenge called A Month of Memories: Remembering the Moments. Participants took the challenge to take a picture a day and to scrap it in a 4x6 layout, which they used to create a mini-album or to combine for larger pages. Each day, I sent an email with daily photo challenges and tips. Some challenges identified a subject like a sunset, while others, like “strength,” invited more imagination. This was not a technique class, so layouts and pictures reflected a wide range of styles. It was amazing – and inspiring - to see the many interpretations posted in the class gallery each day.

It was a real challenge for me to select representative postings in the gallery. There were so many layouts (378!) and so many powerful stories.

With the challenge to do a layout a day, MaryJo managed to do some elaborate layouts, including this clever creation for the challenge on pets. I could not believe how many elements she managed to use on a 4x6 layout!

Every day of the challenge brought new inspiration from the gallery. We shared the importance of journaling to capture the everyday moments and the stories and pictures told wonderful stories. Some layouts made me laugh out loud and others were touching or thought provoking. All were a reminder of the importance of our day-to-day lives. Take the challenge yourself and remember the moments.

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will even have a layout with a Word Art example. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout!

It's Back-to-School time and with it come memories of our own childhood. What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you dream big? This month, join us on the Message Board for a game of "Guess that ScrapGirl!" and find out what our ScrapGirls team members dreamed of becoming when they were little girls.

Every day during the month of September, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a school-aged photo of one of the ScrapGirls team members. Identify the team member and then create and keep an ongoing list with your answers on it, and send your completed list to [email protected] no later than midnight October 2nd. (You can find current photos of all team members in the About Us section of the ScrapGirls home page.)

Everyone who correctly identifies all 30 team members will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates! Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected].
