Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: “Alcohol Resist” Technique

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.

One technique that is used in the paper scrapbooking world is an alcohol resist technique. Recently, we had some members on the board post the challenge of trying to create this same look in digital scrapbooking. I thought I would share one way of creating this look in my own digital scrapbooking.

Screenshot: Open a Watercolor paper template

Open one file from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Artsy – Watercolor. These templates are an easy way of creating the look of bleeding colors of paint and dye that is found in the technique of alcohol resist.

Screenshot: Choose your gradient tool

Select the Gradient Tool. This can be found by right-clicking on the paint bucket found in your Tools Palette.

Screenshot: Choose your gradient

Once the Gradient Tool is selected, you can then select from the gradient options on your top tool bar. It will show you a gradient created from the two colors in your foreground and background color boxes on the Tools Palette. You can adjust these gradients by using the various options on the top tool bar or by selecting different colors.

Screenshot: Create your gradient

In the Layers Palette, create a new layer. On the new layer, drag your mouse from one side of your 12x12 document to the other. This will create a gradient on your new layer.

Screenshot: Adjust Blend Modes

In the Layers Palette, we now need to adjust the Blend Modes to give the watercolor paper the colors of your gradient.

Select the gradient layer.

Click on the drop-down box that says “Normal” (next to the opacity settings) and scroll down the various Blend Modes to see different effects created. I am using “Linear Burn” for my example. You will want to select an option that leaves the colors bold and bright, much like the dye that would be used with paper.

If your document tends to be too dark, you can use levels to lighten or darken your watercolor paper so that the colors can become brighter.

Screenshot: Add layer style

The alcohol resist method in real life is often done on glass, plastic or other shiny, smooth surfaces. To create this look, add an epoxy or glass style to your gradient layer. I use the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Epoxy – 1801 Mini on this example.

Screenshot: Add white layer of detail

To create the look of the resist areas where the dye has been rubbed off, I open up a ScrapSimple Paper Template and drag it over the top of my gradient layer. Recolor the paper template to white. Alternatively, you can use a brush and stamp it in white on a new layer.

Screenshot: Adjust white layer's Blend Mode

Now, to create the resist look and the random effect of the image being rubbed off of the dye, we also change the Blend Mode of the white paper or brush layer to the Blend Mode of “Overlay.” If you would like the white image to be a bit brighter, you can duplicate the layer, which will make the “Overlay” Blend Mode become brighter.

You now have the effect of alcohol resist in the digital format.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
