“7 Things” layout by Jennifer Labre
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
One quick and easy way to highlight a subject in a photo is to make the edges of the photo darker. I do this by using the Burn Tool. On this photo, I used the tool with the settings of Brush Size: 250 px, Hardness: 0%, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 33%. I then simply drag the brush around the edges of the photo and the background a bit to darken it. This helped to really pop my daughter into the forefront of the photo.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS

Other Ingredients:
- Font - Campaign Normal
- Font - Carrington

“It’s All About the Water” layout by Armi Custodio

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to frame my photos, I used the Magic Wand to selectively erase circles in Melanie Johnson’s Childhood Memories “Groovy” paper. To add depth, I applied a low drop shadow (Size: 7px, Distance: 4px, Opacity: 75%) on the Groovy paper and placed round brown frames from the same collection just below the paper layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

“123 JUMP” layout by Christy VanderWall

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the little frogs on the bottom of the page, I placed the “Frog” paper from Shari’s Cabana Collection Biggie on my layout. Then I used Select> Color Range to select the outside part of the frog. Ctrl+J copies the selected part to a new layer. The original paper was then deleted from the layout.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Just the 2 of Us” layout by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the title to include a number and a photo clipped to it. For this, I used the bold number ‘2’ from Amanda Sok’s A Blooming Fancy Collection and clipped a paper from Sheri Johnson’s Cabana Paper Super Mini to it. I transformed my photo into a sketch with Brandy Murry’s Sketch It Action and erased parts of it with Brandie Valenzuela’s Brush Set: Grungelle. Finally I added a slight bevel to the layer with the number.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements CS3
Name of challenge: Numbers

“Sunshine” layout by Kelly Favor-Chronister
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get the look of the embellishments weaving in and out of the string, I used my Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the areas of the string that should be above the element and then created a new layer via copy (Ctrl+J or Command+J on a Mac) and dragged the new layer on top of the element. I also decided to place the larger fish on that particular part of my photo because I did not like the water hose in the background and I did not want to mask or clone it out.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, iPhoto
Name of challenge: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates

“04.22.07” layout by Kim Meeder
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Don’t be afraid to play with your drop shadows. To create the drop shadow on the swirl, I highlighted the swirl layer in my Layers Palette. Next, I brought the Layer Style window up by double clicking on the words “drop shadow.” You could also choose Layer> Layer Style> Drop Shadow. I selected the following settings: Opacity: 51%, Angle: 120 degrees, Distance: 21 px, Spread: 0%, Size: 7 px. Finally, I clicked “Okay.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Numbers

A Designers Life: Melissa Renfro |
Create Beauty
As I sit here tonight, my life is in transition. For the most part of this year, we have been working at selling our house and finding a new home for our family. We just felt like this was the right time to be able to spread out a little bit and have some more room for us, our ministry activities and our five boys.
At the beginning of the summer, we drove by a house in a rural area of our town. We really loved the idea of living on an acre of land, letting the boys run and ride bikes, growing a garden, etc. While this house was for sale, it was totally out of our price range, but we could tell it would need some work. It had been vacant for quite a while and much of the landscaping was overgrown. We looked in the windows and saw that much of the interior was dated. We thought we might just call and see if our realtor knew anything about it. He walked us through the house and said he would get us some more information.
The house was wonderful. It had all the rooms we needed and space for everything we wanted. It was dated but well cared for. Right away I began to “see” how it should be. I could see curtains on the windows and flowers in the kitchen. I could see how the living room would look with a nice fireplace and mantle and no more wood paneling. I looked out the windows and could imagine the hummingbirds hovering over bright feeders and butterflies fluttering around climbing rose bushes. I could almost hear the joyful shouting of the boys running and playing games around the house.
I am inspired to create beauty. I see beauty in the things that God has created and I want to capture that and, in a small way, create things that reflect that beauty. This house is a great house; it is just waiting for laughter, waiting for joy and life. It is waiting for us. It just needed someone to see a vision of what it could be, the beauty that could be there.
This last weekend we sold our house. By the time you read this, we will be moved into a new house. We are moving into this dream house, a house that needed a dream. We are going to bring life here, a new life, and work on it a little at a time. Even in the little things like paint colors and new lights, we will be able to put in a little creativity and make an older house into a warm home for our family. I will finally have a place to really stretch my creative spirit and be able to try new things and see what becomes of it. We will really be able to make this house our own.
- Melissa

Favorite product I've designed:
ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001

Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 and are also available.
Photography was my first love and I really love giving my photos a “finished” look by using the smart glow on color photos. I love the look of black and white photos as well as the chocolate-colored pictures. For this layout, I wanted a soft black and white look to blend into the background paper. Using these actions, I was able to get that soft look.

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
