Life Muses by Ro: Mystery Garden |
Note from Ro: I have been hijacked. Heidi, our newsletter editor, noticed how quiet I have been for the past few weeks, and she decided to force me into taking a break from writing muses. I accepted gladly! She will be sharing some muses of her own this week while I take some time to catch my breath.

For the past two summers, a garden has been mysteriously growing in my backyard. It magically appears in the same place, a small side strip of earth separated from the main yard by our cement driveway. It starts slowly, little green shoots developing larger leaves, and before I know it, I have a forest of sunflowers greeting me each day.
Last summer, it was such a shock to see sunflowers growing that I couldn’t believe it was real. I was so surprised and pleased to have actual, live flowers growing in my yard! I have the world’s blackest green thumb, and everything I try to grow ends up dead in just a few weeks. Even unkillable plants like cacti wither under the power of my Black Thumb. So, naturally, I wondered how these gorgeous flowers were growing, seemingly out of nowhere, in the toxic environs of my backyard!
When I finally put the pieces together, I laughed at myself. For, right in the middle of my sunflower forest is my bird feeder station. With bird food in it. Namely, sunflower seeds. Specifically, black oil sunflower seeds. That get knocked out of their feeder tubes by enthusiastic birds.
Apparently, my birds have greener thumbs than I do.
A few birthdays ago, my dad gave me a simple tube bird feeder. It is designed to hold sunflower seeds, and has multiple openings and perches for birds to sit on and eat their food. Of course, once I started attracting a few birds, I was so fascinated with them that I didn’t stop until I had visited my local birding store, gathered up enough information and supplies to feed even Hitchcock’s army of birds, and I set up a station in my backyard.
One of my daily pleasures is to watch “my” birds come and eat. I love watching the male House Sparrows squawk and tussle over the best perches to eat their favorite white proso millet. The bright red House Finches eat their sunflower chips demurely. The beautiful Goldfinches love their Nyger Thistle seeds, and their tiny squeaks and chirps announce their arrival in flocks of six or more. Mourning Doves are a favorite too; we have two pair that scavenge the ground for the millet that the sparrows knock down. Starlings come in the spring to eat the suet and mealworms for their chicks. And the eternal comics, the Scrub Jays, always search the peanut feeder for the best nut before taking off to hide their treasure.
We have been feeding long enough that we have had generations of birds live with us. We have watched them nest, hatch and grow right in our backyard. Although they are still wild and timid, my heart always swells with gratitude when I am outside working and they still feel comfortable enough around me to stay and eat their dinner. They know what it means when I go into the garage with their empty feeders. I can hear them calling to each other, and by the time I come back out, full feeders in hand, the trees and fences around are full of birds, expectantly waiting for their fresh food.
To earn that trust, I have had to be gentle, kind and respectful of the birds and their needs. They have given me so much in return, I feel like I could never thank them enough. The daily joy of hearing their songs, watching them eat, drink and bathe. The springtime amazement of seeing new chicks, flapping wings and wide-open beaks, nourished and cared for right in front of my eyes. And, of course, my garden of sunflowers. I can never thank them enough for that.
- Heidi

Best of the Message Board |
Question: Could someone help me with this problem? I purchased the first Secrets tutorial series and downloaded them, watched them and everything was perfect. With More Secrets, the view is awful. I read the instructions and followed them, but I can only view the tutorial at normal size, which means the tutorial is BIGGER than my screen and I can't follow it without moving it horizontally to view toolbars and palette actions during the tutorial. If I change it to half size, I can't read any of the words within Photoshop. I can now see the whole tutorial screen, but all of the type is funky. HELP!
Why is the first tutorial series perfect and this one is messed up? I have viewed the tutorial in the QuickTime viewer and Windows Media and it is the same for both. I even asked a more tech savvy coworker and she couldn't figure it out either. Please advise.
Answer: I give some tips in the PDFs that come with your downloads, but here are some more that will help. It sounds like you are playing the movies on a smaller monitor. I just played them on my laptop and found some things that will help you.
- Open the movie in QuickTime and start it.
- Hit Ctrl+F. This will make the movie play full screen and you'll see everything clearly.
- You can experiment with some other large views by going back and forth between Ctrl+F and Ctrl+3 (full size) and Ctrl +2 (double size).
When the movie is playing at full size like that, you won't be able to see the stop and start button, but that's okay. Just hit your Enter key to stop and start it. If you hit Enter to stop it, the next time you hit Enter, it will start it.
The reason that QuickTime has the ability to do this zooming up and playing movies at different sizes is because everyone has such different monitors. It's impossible to create a movie that suits everyone's monitor perfectly. But, QuickTime has been very helpful, if you know the tricks!
If you are using the Windows Media movies, the latest and greatest Windows Media viewer (which just came down recently) now has a little button at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Click on it and it will bring the movie full screen and you'll be able to read the text.
The problem you've been having is that your players are bringing up the movies in a far away distance sort of thing because of your monitor size. We just need to have you do some things with the players so that the players will pop the movies up close to your face.
Hope that helps!
Response: Thanks for the post, but I read the included directions and tried what you just posted and it doesn't work. In the full screen mode, I see about 3/4 of the video, which means that either the left or right of the tutorial is cut off and in the other small view the type font is so funky that it almost isn't readable. I just don't know why the first set works perfectly and the second set does not. The Windows Media is a bit better; at least I can read the fonts in Photoshop, although it is very small. I am going to try it on my computer at home and see how it looks. My work monitor is old, about 14” actual screen, but it was perfect for the first set of tutorials. I could see ALL of the tutorials without any problem.
Response Answer: Ah... if you are on an old work monitor with a 14” screen size, that would explain everything. The resolution is off for them. (Companies don't buy that size any more which gives us a BIG clue!)
The reason that the first tutorials worked for you is because the software I use to film them used to let me film to account for those older monitors. But then, between that version and More Secrets, the software updated (and I upgraded the software because the features were worth upgrading to) and that ability was removed.
Also, my newer computer monitor wouldn't let me go backwards to the old monitor settings when I filmed. (I used to take my monitor backwards to the old resolution setting when I filmed the training, but I had bought a new computer in between filming Secrets and More Secrets.) I suddenly couldn't do it. My monitor would NOT let me. It flaked out completely. It forces me up to a current resolution setting. I had no option but to film the movies using my new monitor settings (which are now standard).
Keep in mind that my new computer is now two-and-a-half years-old, so it is not really new. But, things change that fast. And that 14” work monitor of yours is probably pretty old and uses that older resolution setting that my computer won't allow me to use anymore.
Anyway, back to the story... when I did More Secrets, both the software and my new monitor forced me to use new standard resolution settings. That means that if someone is trying to watch them on a monitor with really old specs - like this work monitor of yours - you are going to have this problem you are describing.
It's not a screen size thing. It is an “old monitor and lower resolution” problem. At first, I thought it might be a screen size thing, which is why I tried it on my laptop versus my desktop because my laptop monitor is much smaller. But, it is also a year and a half old and it has new resolution specs and can handle the movies great. I just brought them to full screen and I could see everything perfectly.

Question: I purchased ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Downtown and have been trying to recolor them according to the learning center on PSP XI using the Color Changer Tool and I can’t seem to get it to work. The steps I follow are:
- Open> Copy> New Image the ScrapSimple paper of choice.
- Set Material Palette Foreground/Stroke to the new color I want it to be.
- Select Color Changer Tool.
- Click on the black area that I want to color.
I get the hourglass icon that it is trying to do something, but then the Color Changer Tool reappears and my image is not changed. I have tried various things, wondering if the PSP learning center “assumes” I know things and does not include them in the directions. For example: I have had the Background Fill Properties: black or tried other colors - no change; I have selected Color Changer Tool prior to selecting color - no change; selected color prior to selecting Color Changer Tool - no change. What am I missing?
Answer 1:The template’s black. I can’t figure out why, but the Color Changer Tool does not work with black. These are your options. You can use a clipping mask: put a paper on top of it, select the black area, click on the paper and choose either Delete (I think that’s Dee's shortcut) or right-click and pick “Promote To Layer.” Or, you can go to Hue> Saturation. I believe you have to click on “Colorize” and play with the hue and saturation. Or, select the black area, create a new layer and fill on the new layer. Sorry I don’t have more detail, that program is not on this machine.
Answer 2: Color Changer, from what I can tell, assumes that you have a color first, with highlights, shadows, etc. It works that way. If it’s black, it’s all shadow, so it can’t really color change it. Does that make sense?
Response: Yes, it does make sense... although confusing somewhat. A friend who has PSP X can change it with no hitches, so we were frustrated with my program last night. I had tried the masking and it ends up looking as if I used the Flood Fill Tool, which just looks like someone swabbed a glob of paint on the background. What I am doing - not sure if this is right, but it works - is, loading it as a brush. I then open a new layer and brush on the color I want, resize it to the 12x12 and Copy> Paste it to the paper I want it on. When I have more time, I'll have to play with the Color Changer on a color. Thanks for your response and help. I appreciate you!
Answer 3: In PSP Xi, for some reason I will never understand, they use the exact same icon (the blue and green circles with an arrow) for two very similar named tools - the Color Replacer Tool and the Color Changer Tool. One is grouped with all of the retouch tools and the other is grouped with the Flood Fill Tool. One works the way you would expect it to, the other does not. I can't tell you how many times I've had a brain cramp and picked one when I wanted the other and then sat there wondering what in the world was going on and why this wasn't working right. Any chance that's what happening here? |

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.
How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
