“Hot Dog” layout by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For the distressed look of the top picture, I first erased the edges with the Well Worn Brush (Opacity reduced to 50%). Then I placed a Beautiful Distressed Paper Template on top and changed the Blend Mode of the paper template layer to “Overlay.”
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Shamrock” layout by Stefanie Harris
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
It’s not very often that I dedicate this amount of time to a layout, but this was totally worth it. I wanted a lot of color and texture, but at the heart of this layout is the story... the journaling. I wanted to include more than one picture of Shamrock, but the cute one of him lying down just looked awkward in a frame, or just stuck on the page, so I decided to make it a part of the “journaling block” background. After dragging the photo over my background paper, I applied the “Soft Light” Blend Mode, and then used a soft brush to erase the carpet area of the photograph.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Name of challenge: Pets
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: Shamrock joined our family on a bit of a whim. A co-worker of mine had a litter of kittens, and needed to part with a few of them. When we got him, he was named “Bruce,” which was not at all fitting, I felt, so we worked for close to a week to come up with a better name. Nothing seemed right, and our frustration mounted. One day, when Kaitlyn was holding him, she said, “Wow, Mom... he’s lighter than a shamrock!” Why she picked that particular thing, I will never know. I had never really contemplated the mass of a shamrock before. Why not a feather?
Well, as you might have guessed, this stuck, and our little kitty had a name... Sham, or Shammie for short. He became fast friends with Snoozer, our dog, and was extraordinarily personable - or more so than any other can I’d owned.
He would romp and play with us, and Snoozer would allow him to eat from the same dish. This amazed us, given her “Alpha-female” mindset. We almost wondered if Shamrock had an identity crisis.
He and Snoozer would cuddle up in her crate, or on a sunny patch of rug in the living room. They had become nearly inseparable. Then came Zeke. I’m not really sure why we got another cat, but Shamrock was not impressed. He became extremely territorial, and even stopped getting along with Snoozer. It was a bummer, but I never really understood the long-term impact until I became pregnant with Haley. He was completely intolerable, demanding. He and Zeke fought a lot, and I ended up having to give them both up. It broke my heart. I still miss my silly, cuddly boy.

“A Dog's Life” layout by Kelly Favor-Chronister

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make Verdell, the black dog, show up better in the photographs, I added a new Levels Adjustment Layer and grouped it with the photograph (Ctrl+G or Command+G on a Mac - this is also called a “clipping mask”). I adjusted the sliders until I was pleased with how light the dark dog was without making the lighter dog look unrealistically bright.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, iPhoto
Name of challenge: Pets

“Zeus” layout by Amy Lemaniak
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I had this cool photo of Zeus looking out into the street that I wanted to incorporate into my layout in a subtle way. I enlarged the photo so it was the length of my layout, then I changed the Blend Mode to “Hard Light” and lightened the Opacity to 25%. I still had a hard edge from the edge of my photo that I wanted to soften. I took one of Lori Cook’s Grunge Brushes and, with the Eraser Tool, I slowly erased the edge of my photo in line with Zeus’ body to give it a nice, soft, blended look.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Pets

“Paws for a Snooze” layout by Jo Corne
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To show the ribbon through the ‘brad’ hole in Theresa Kavouras’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Corner Folds - Off Center Biggie, I first placed the ‘brad’ element that comes with the template onto the fold. Then, using my Magic Wand, I selected the brad. I then rasterized the “Dots Up” paper from Thao Cosgrove’s gorgeous Creative Cat Collection Biggie and hit Delete. The area that I had selected from the brad was then cut away on the paper, leaving the ribbon that is underneath showing through.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Pets
Other Ingredients:
- Font - LubalGraph Bld
- Font - LubalGraph Book

“Jellybean” layout by Kim Meeder
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the blue background paper on my layout to have some softness around the edges. I decided to add some brushwork. I created a new layer above the background paper. By creating a new layer to work on, I could save, change or delete my brushwork without affecting my background layer. Next, I chose a soft brush set at Opacity of 23% and Flow of 58%. Using my Eyedropper Tool, I picked a tan color from the photo matte. Finally, I brushed around the edges of my layer until I got just the softness and color I wanted. It was a subtle change, but definitely made a difference.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Pets

A Designers Life: Durin Eberhart |
Finding the Perfect Hair... For Me
I was recently looking through some family photos and had to groan at all of the different hairstyles I’ve had over the years. When I was young, my hair was long and straight, sometimes with bangs, sometimes without. I was too young to know what “style” was and never really thought about my hair. In retrospect, I should have kept it like that.
But then, I became aware of fashion trends, pop culture, celebrities and the hairstyles they inspired and naturally felt like I had to “fit in.”
In elementary school, the “Dorothy Hamill” became popular. It was a short, sassy little bob and, of course, I had to have it. It was a cute style, but it didn’t do anything for me. So, I decided to let that grow out and try something new.
My next style was the “Farrah Fawcett.” I was in the fifth or sixth grade by then and my aunt gave me this fabulous style. It was stunning and worked well with my features, but it was a lot of work. Blow-drying with a round brush took forever and I started experimenting with hot rollers. Getting prepared for school every morning was becoming a chore.
Next came a style with no name, but it was the classic 80’s big hair with lots of curls (permed, of course) and lots of hair spray. Everyone had this same layered style, boys and girls alike. And, even though I had a perm, the hot rollers were still used every morning as my hair was meticulously styled. My mother hated this style on me and, in retrospect, I agree. I cringe when I see photos of myself during this time.
I decided to do something drastic. I was tired of the perms, the curls and the big hair. I cut my own hair and I did a wonderful job. Remember when Prince was part of “The Revolution”? Remember Wendy from his band? She was the inspiration for that haircut and it was asymmetrical, fun and funky and absolutely original. But also absolutely impossible to duplicate so, as it grew, I had to find another style.
For a few years, I went back to my original little girl, long, straight hair. I cut it shoulder length, though, and added wispy bangs. It looked great and I kept that style until I got the itch to try something new.
I went to my good friend, who had just finished cosmetology school, with a photo in hand. It was a photo of River Phoenix and I wanted that exact haircut. It turned out perfectly and I loved it. It was a short, wedged style that one of my friends called “runner’s hair.” But, the joy was short-lived as it was just too much work to maintain and I once again reverted to my shoulder-length, straight hair.
Of course, as I became bored with my “default” shoulder-length, straight style, I tried new styles, this time inspired by Princess Diana and then Jennifer Aniston. In between each of these styles I turned to the straight, shoulder-length standby.
I realized that none of the “celebrity” styles I have ever tried have worked for me. They either didn’t suit my face, my personality or they were entirely too time-consuming to maintain. But, the one style that did suit me perfectly was the same style I had when I was too young to know what “style” was. No more celebrity hairstyles for me. I’ll stick to my own style, thank you.

Favorite product I've designed:
Fantaisie Collection Mini

Beautiful jewel tones were the focus of the Fantaisie Collection Mini. I fell in love with this rich color scheme and the sense of elegance it gave. Adding the golden accents created a magical feel.

To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
