Life Muses by Ro: Contented

When you think of the word “contented,” what image comes to mind? I imagine a grandpa and grandma sitting on their porch, their hands resting on their bellies, smiles on their faces, as they gaze around their yard. They are relaxed because they own their home. They have flowers, a garden and bottles of fruit in their basement. Their grandchildren come to visit on Sundays and they drink limeade in clear glasses. They go on drives in their old car and stop at roadside diners to eat hot turkey sandwiches.

Of course, I am describing my own grandparents who seemed contented to me, despite the struggles they faced. My grandmother often told me about going through the depression and being so poor that she didn’t have a nickel to buy a spool of thread. I repeatedly heard about the time she wanted a new dress for a dance so badly that she carefully unpicked it, turned it inside out and sewed it up again. I was told about the time when the drought got so bad that Grandpa couldn’t raise crops and then the federal government came along and made them kill their pigs because they wanted to try and raise the price of pork. They didn’t have any way of making money, so Grandpa had to go to another state that winter to work, leaving his family behind to get along the best they could.

I was told the hard-times stories of their lives, but I was also told the good-times stories and there were more of those. I heard about dances, parties, plays, socials, visits with families, gardening, sewing and the other interests they had that made life happy and good. My grandparents didn’t sit around and mope when times got hard. They worked hard and then had fun. They played checkers each night, sang at the piano, went sledding and pulled taffy. They knew that it was important to create happy memories for themselves.

In his book Overworked, Don Hawkins wrote that “life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it!”

Even though the depression went away and their financial lives improved, Grandma and Grandpa never ‘got over’ the depression because getting through the depression made them appreciate what they had. I suppose that is why they enjoyed sitting on their front porch on summer evenings talking to their family about everything and nothing at all.

In the book Finding Rest When the Work is Never Done, Patrick Klingaman gives us a method of understanding how contented we are:

How can we gauge our overall level of contentment? A simple method is to compare the time we spend appreciating our current situation with the time we spend wishing for something better. If phrases like “if only” or “as soon as” are a staple in your vocabulary, contentment probably doesn’t describe your outlook. Don’t worry; you are not alone. Most people could identify with at least one of these wish phrases: “if only I had a better job,” “if only my spouse understood me better,” “as soon as I make enough money,” “as soon as our children leave home.” Even one unfulfilled wish can rob us of contentment if we allow ourselves to dwell on it.

He then continues and gives three keys to achieving contentment which are: gratitude, acceptance and service.

I can now see that my grandparents were contented because these three attributes were part of their daily lives. Their experience had taught them to be grateful for each gift God sent to them. They had learned to accept their circumstances and find joy in whatever they could. They were also models of service. My grandmother – who I saw nearly every day of my life – never came to our home without a gift of bread, cookies, jam or other like item. She served her community, her family, her neighbors, her friends and her church faithfully. When I think of Grandma, I think of a busy little woman who was always thinking of others.

I would like to say that I am contented at this moment that you are in my life. You are a blessing to me. I want you to know how important you are to all of us here at Scrap Girls. Thank you so much.

Have a great day,

- Ro

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Wrapping a Frame Using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flat Ribbons

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Mac OS X.

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are a great way to create tons of unique digital scrapbooking embellishments for your layouts. I am going to show you how to wrap a frame using the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flat Ribbons.

Screenshot: Open ribbon file

Begin by opening the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flat Ribbons PNG file of your choice. I am going to be using the striped ribbon for this example.

Screenshot: Open frame file

Now, open the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Vintage Portrait Frames 1 PNG file of your choice. I will be using #4 from this set.

Screenshot: Create a new blank file

In order to give yourself ample working space, open a new 12x12 blank file by choosing File> New, and make sure it is set to inches. Specify 12” for both height and width, 300 for the resolution, “RGB” for the color mode and “Transparent” for the background contents.

Screenshot: Drag files onto new document

Now, drag your ribbon template file and your photo frame file over to your newly created 12x12 blank document.

Screenshot: Check layer placement

Next, we are going to wrap the ribbon around the frame by using a clipping mask. To do this, make sure your ribbon layer is on top of the frame layer in your Layers Palette.

Screenshot: Create clipping mask

Position your ribbon where you would like it to look wrapped around the frame. Make sure your ribbon layer is active in the Layers Palette by clicking on it before you move the ribbon. Once you have the ribbon positioned where you would like it, press Ctrl+G (Command+G on a Mac) to “clip” it to the frame layer beneath it, thereby hiding the parts of the ribbon that extend beyond the sides of the frame. **Note that when using this method, you’ll need to make sure that the placement of the ribbon itself is not overlapping the open portion of the frame, as it will hide that part of the ribbon as well. I have placed my ribbon under the bottom of the frame opening as shown.

Now that your ribbon has been “clipped” to the frame, you can add color and shadows to it to make it look more realistic. Start with the ribbon layer by clicking on it in the Layers Palette. Set your foreground color in the Tools Palette for the color you would like the ribbon to be. I am going to use a green color.

Screenshot: Colorize ribbon

With that color selected, press Ctrl+U (Command+U on a Mac) and when the box pops open, check the box next to “Colorize” on the bottom right and then move the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders just a bit until you are happy with the resulting ribbon color. (Make sure the “Preview” box at the bottom right is also checked so that you can see the changes as they happen.)

Screenshot: Colorize frame

You can also give your frame some color by following the same steps listed above for coloring the ribbon. Set your foreground color to the color you’d like your frame to be first.

Now you can go ahead and add your drop shadow to your clipped ribbon layer. **Note that the shadow itself will also clip itself to the frame layer so that you will only see shadowing on the frame itself and nowhere outside of it.

Screenshot: Add drop shadow to ribbon

In the Layers Palette, click on the ribbon layer to make it active. Next, click on the layer styles button at the bottom of the Layers Palette. (The layer styles button looks like a black circle with the letter “f” inside of it.) When you click on the layer styles button, a menu will drop down and you will choose “Drop Shadow.” You will want to give your ribbon layer a subtle drop shadow that slightly takes on the color of the ribbon itself. To do this, I am choosing these options to coordinate with my green ribbon:

  • Blend Mode: “Multiply,” with color set to a darker greenish-grey
  • Opacity: 60%
  • Angle: 120 degrees, check “Use Global Light”
  • Distance: 8 px
  • Spread: 9%
  • Size: 5 px

Leave the rest underneath as is. **Note that you will want to check the “Preview” box here as well so that you can see the drop shadow changes as you create them.

Screenshot: Add several layers of ribbon

Get creative and add a few layers of ribbons, possibly turning them at an angle as well. To achieve the effect in this example, simply copy the existing ribbon layer by clicking on it in the Layers Palette and dragging it down to the New Layer button at the bottom of the Palette. (The New Layer button looks like a tiny square inside of a larger square.) Once you have a copy of the ribbon layer, press Ctrl+T (Command+T on a Mac) and turn the corner handles to rotate the ribbon.

You can explore many other options with layering of various styles of ribbon and strings to get a very textured and interesting effects. Have fun!

Opportunities for You!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
