Although I loved the look of the torn flowers on the template, I fell in love with the crocheted flowers in the Urban Love Collection and just had to use them! I modified the template to remove the torn flowers and inserted the crocheted flowers in their place.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes when developing an idea for a layout, indecisiveness sets in... what do I want to use to convey my message? With so many great elements at my disposal, it’s difficult to choose just a few. This is when I end up with a layout like this one. Lots of elements invariably lead to lots of layering.

So what do you do in a case where you want one element to overlap another in one area, but be hidden in another area? One example of this (on this layout) is the legs of the little birdy element (from Angie Briggs’ Little Birdy Collection), and how it interacts with the string and tie element (Angie’s Fit to Be Tied Embellishment). There is a really neat trick that doesn’t require duplicating anything.

The first step is to select the layer of the element you will be modifying (in this case, the bird). With that layer active, Ctrl+Click the layer icon of the element that will be “interacting” with it (in this case the bow) – you will know this is accomplished when you see “marching ants” around that element. Then – using your Eraser Tool – erase the areas you want “hidden.” By having the bow element highlighted, your Eraser Tool will only work within the confines of the marching ants. This way you don’t have to worry about erasing too much! Easy!

Journaling: This is one tough job! I never “got into it” thinking otherwise, but... WOW! I try not to place too much pressure on myself, but the truth of the matter is that this is a huge responsibility! But it’s moments like this one when I know for sure that I wouldn’t have it any other way!

To create the background paper, I used two of Angie Briggs’ gorgeous papers from her Urban Living and Sweet Words Collections. Using a layer mask over the top paper layer, the “Blue Rose” paper, and then, using the Gradient Tool, I blended the two papers together to get my final effect.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the punched out look, I first duplicated my background paper from Angie Briggs’ Feeling Free Collection. Then, with the copy layer activated, I used the Magic Wand to select areas that I wanted punched out. I then hit Delete and applied a shadow to this layer to give the erased areas some depth.

I also wanted to give the gray background color some texture, so I clipped a gray paper of a similar shade from Amanda Sok’s Textured Cardstock Mega Pack 1 to the punched out layer. The sunrays are from Melanie Johnson’s ScrapSimple Paper Template: Pop Op. I just resized it, filled it with an orange color and used the “Color Burn” Blend Mode in the Layers Palette.

A Designers Life: dinny [Diane Miller]

In Search of My Style

So many times I am searching the web for design inspiration and I notice something... lots of designers have a strong, identifiable style. I can find an image and know immediately who the designer is. When I look thru my designs, I do not see “one style,” I see multiple styles. I sometimes wonder if I’m a design schizophrenic! Is there something wrong with that? Do I need to define “a style” that is unique to me? Maybe I’m not good enough to have a style. Or, maybe I have a style, but I just don’t see “it” and others may.

I did some extensive searching on the Internet. I started at Google in search of a design style quiz. I found one on hgtv.com claiming to “find out which design style suits my personality best.” Perfect! This style quiz would definitely tell me what my design style is! This HAS to be the answer! OK, I’m ready... first question...

1. They ask me to select my favorite dog. I thought this was going to define my design style.

2. Shells? Well, they want to know which travel brochure locale I would like to choose. I hope it gets better than this.

3. Where would I go on the perfect date with the man of my dreams? Bummer, they didn’t offer choices for the man!

4. Pick my dream doorbell sound... OK, where is this going?

5. Pick a hat. I absolutely hate to wear hats. This is getting very difficult!

6. Cocktails! Oh dear... they didn’t have ANY beer.

7. Pick a crafting class. Hmmm... too many to decide. How can I pick ONLY one?

8. Select a view from my dream home. This one’s easy!

9. Cookies, yum! Simple, there is only one with chocolate!

10. A gift for someone, another obvious one: art supplies!

11. Dance steps? They didn’t have any with two left feet, so I had to compromise yet again.

12. Pick a chair to buy from eBay. I pick the one with the best resale, because I really didn’t like any of them.

Oh well, they were going to give me their final decision...

ECCENTRIC!

“You're eccentric with a touch of: sweet and classy. For you, it’s all about the mix. Any style is welcome in your world as long as it complements something else. You’re drawn to funky interiors and eye-catching color combinations (think red and blue, orange and turquoise, purple and gold). [My kitchen is terra cotta and plum.] You like contrasting patterns and unconventional architecture. [OK, I’ll agree with that.] You enjoy furnishings that remind you of your travels mixed with modern pieces and offbeat furniture. [Well, I do travel to the thrift store to find bargains.]”

I wasn’t totally satisfied, since I fudged some of the answers. I thought I would try dictionary.com to check out their definition of “eccentric.” Maybe that would make me feel better.

1. deviating from the recognized or customary character, practice, etc.; irregular; erratic; peculiar; odd: eccentric conduct; an eccentric person.

STOP right there! I suppose that IS me! “Deviating from the recognized character.” Since I don’t see a recognizable style, I MUST be eccentric!

WOW, I feel SO much better now.

NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Conquering the Fear of Patterned Paper

August 14 and 21 - 9:30PM ET

This in-depth digital scrapbooking class is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to use patterns. Patterns can be overwhelming and challenging to use. Learn some simple rules and guidelines to make them easier. Discuss different types of patterns, and how to effectively combine them. Study real examples, and see how applying the rules can improve your layouts.

Important: This is an Intermediate Level class open to all software program users. Students are, however, required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program for their software prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!

Enrolling in this course without understanding these basic skills may cause you to feel lost and frustrated when you attend the classes. We want you to have a great experience. So please, if you are uncertain that you have enough skills to take this course, use the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program to build an adequate foundation prior to the classes starting. Thanks!

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
