Customer Muse: Lost in Ladybug Thoughts

As I back out of the garage, late for my doctor appointment, I notice a dead bug on the front windshield. I wonder to myself how long it has been there and how could I not have noticed it in my line of vision the last time I drove. I drive a few blocks and then stop for the intersection light. I will be on the freeway in a moment.

I see that the dead bug is really a ladybug and note that it's alive. I think to myself that they are supposed to be good luck and refrain from reaching out to touch it on my side of the windshield. (As if, somehow, I would receive some good luck by indirect touch.) I ask myself if it will it be able to hold on to the windshield against the wind on the freeway. I hope that the pressure will keep it there rather than blow it off.

I wonder if ladybugs have families and then worry that I have displaced the ladybug from its family. If the ladybug is displaced from its family, does it find a new one? I tell myself that I need to read up about ladybugs and how they live.

I get on the freeway and pray that the lady bug will hold on. Hold on! I watch it slowly move up the windshield glass as I am driving. I consider stopping the car, but I can't be any later for my appointment. I tell myself that I have to stop. I realize that my toes are actually curled inside of my shoes because I am so anxious about the ladybug. I wonder if the ladybug is just going along for the ride or if it is clinging on for dear life against the wind. Please hold on until I can get to the next exit. Please.

I stop about 15 miles from where I began. I pull over on the off-ramp and get out of the car. I try to nudge the ladybug and it's as hard as a rock. It seems STUCK on the windshield. I think it is dead.

“Well, that answers that,” I say out loud, responding to my earlier question about if the ladybug is holding on for dear life.

Wait, it moved! I can now see its legs and it looks okay. I try to pick up the ladybug but I can't. It won't climb up on any of my fingers and I don't want to crush it. I try to scoop it, but still can't seem to get it. “I'm trying to save you,” I tell the ladybug out loud.

Suddenly, the ladybug slides down the windshield and into the space between the windshield wipers and the engine hood. “Oh My!” I gasp. I remind myself that I tried. I hope that the ladybug is okay and can hold on to whatever it landed on until I get to my destination or that it fell through to the ground and I don't run it over.

I resume driving and have a few more ladybug thoughts...

- The ladybug and what I imagined it was going through on my windshield, doesn't seem so far removed from how I have felt at times.

- Does anyone wonder where the ladybug has gone? Does it make a new family and friends or try to find and reconnect with the old?

- Is it clinging on for dear life, struggling to stay on the windshield or does it get sucked up by the wind to be either killed or left wondering, “How did I get here and now what?”

- And, my final thought before returning to the real world, “Goodness gracious. That is me. I have been that ladybug on more than one occasion.”

University Updates

My favorite part about teaching here at Scrap Girls is the “Aha!” moment that students sometimes have when a concept suddenly clicks in their minds. Although we may be many miles apart, I can feel it when it happens.

For each class, I come prepared to share my insights and ideas with my students, but I am always blown away by the things that they share with me. If it is a technique-based class, it amazes me how my students learn the technique and then take it to the next level, using it in ways I couldn’t even imagine. If it is a design class, I come away inspired by the way they add their own personal style to the principles we’ve been working on.

One of my very favorite classes to teach is “The Art and Importance of Journaling.” Writing a class on journaling completely changed my outlook on scrapbooking. I stopped feeling obligated to scrapbook pictures and started scrapbooking memories. Pictures became just one tool, albeit an important one, in my scrapbooking arsenal. The students from this class adopted this outlook as well. They tried the techniques and had success creating scrapbooking layouts that recorded memories, not just pictures.

During class, we learned several techniques to encourage writing more than what is obvious in the picture. Shari did a wonderful job of this. She said that when she was trying to decide what to write, the only thing she could think of was “the floor is clean in the picture.” She dug a little deeper and wrote some sweet thoughts about her children.

August Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in August! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line saying “BINGO CARD” and including your message board user name by Sunday, August 3rd in order to play in the first round which will begin Monday, August 4th.

Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call 5 random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
