Life Muses by Ro: Disaster in the Neighborhood

Bird 1: Did you hear about the disaster in the next neighborhood?

Bird 2: No! There’s a disaster? Oh my... What’s happening?

Bird 1: Joe – you remember Joe, don’t you?

Bird 2: Oh sure... Joe is the little guy who eats sandwiches.

Bird 1: Yes, that’s the guy. Well, Joe was sitting on this wood fence, watching a garbage can closely. Joe’s a dumpster-diver, right?

Bird 2: Right. I remember the time when Joe flew in a dumpster because he mistook a branch for a worm and the man who was dumping lawn clippings didn’t see him sitting there.

Bird 1: That was something, wasn’t it? Joe had this earthy compost fragrance for weeks after he was discovered and released.

Bird 2: Ummmm... that was nice. Maybe he ought to do that more often. He might be able to catch a chick, if he does.

Bird 1: I don’t think Joe will be chasing after any chicks anytime soon.

Bird 2: Why ever not? He’s quite the dapper fellow.

Bird 1: Because of the disaster, you idiot! I’ve been trying to tell you that Joe is involved in a first-class mess and you keep getting me off track.

Bird 2: There was a track involved in this disaster of Joe’s? How did a track get mixed up in it?

Bird 1: No! No! There wasn’t a track... You’re off track.

Bird 2: I certainly am not. I am sitting on a wall. Why don’t you quit talking about sports events and tell me about Joe.

Bird 1: We are not talking about sporting events.

Bird 2: Then why did you bring up track? Track and field is a sporting event. I’m fairly good at the hop, skip and jump events. But running... not so much. I’m a disaster at running. My legs are too short.

Bird 1: Disaster. Yes, you are a disaster. We can agree on that one. Now that we have come to that conclusion, can I please tell you about Joe and the trouble he got himself into?

Bird 2: If you insist. But I must be honest with you. It’s fairly hard for me to concentrate on Joe when my feelings have been destroyed because you called me a disaster. However, since I am an agreeable bird, I’ll allow you to continue.

Bird 1: (sigh) Joe was sitting on the fence minding his own business when he saw something that he swears has changed his life forever. Joe says he is in love.

Bird 2: What’s wrong with that?

Bird 1: Because Joe fell in love with...

Bird 2: With whom?

Bird 1: I’ll tell you if you’ll stop interrupting me. Joe has fallen in love with a lawn ornament. He has flipped over the silly thing. You should see him right now. He’s over there moaning about how lovely its eyes are.

Bird 2: Lawn ornament? Is that one of those shiny things that hangs on trees?

Bird 1: No. No. No! Those are Christmas ornaments. This is a lawn ornament - a big pink bird.

Bird 2: A big pink bird has moved into the neighborhood? Is she pretty? It sounds like she must be pretty if she has nice eyes.

Bird 1: The ornament isn’t a she. It’s an “it.” The ornament looks like a bird. It isn’t actually a bird.

Bird 2: Now, wait a minute... You said that it is a big, pink bird and that it has nice eyes. And now you are saying that it isn’t a bird at all. But, you have to be wrong. It sounds to me like Joe picked up a pink chick.

Bird 1: Joe couldn’t pick up this chick. It would kill him.

Bird 2: Ohhhhhh... so it’s an angry bird? Is it the kind that eats other birds? Like a big, pink eagle? That would be a disaster! We need to call in Neighborhood Watch because a big, pink eagle is a danger to us all!

Bird 1: Sigh... It is not an eagle, you goof. It’s a flamingo.

Bird 2: The pink chick is a flamingo? There is a flamingo in this neighborhood? No kidding.

Bird 1: That’s right. You have it. Joe is in love with a pink flamingo.

Bird 2: I guess I’ll agree with you then. I’ve heard of some crazy things before, but I’ve never heard of a bird falling in love with a dancer before.

Bird 1: What are you talking about now?

Bird 2: The angry flamingo dancer wearing a pink outfit. I bet her tap shoes are too tight.

Bird 1: Sigh... Want a sandwich?

Bird 2: Don’t mind if I do.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Creating Unique Alphas Using ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Legacy

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Mac OS X.

ScrapSimple Templates allow for unlimited creativity, and I will be showing you a unique way to create beautiful digital scrapbooking alphas using the ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Legacy.

Begin by opening the ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Legacy PSD file containing the letter or base layer and the decorative floral layer for the letter of your choice.

Add color to your base layer by clicking the box icon next to the word “lock” at the top left of your Layers Palette. Double-click your foreground color box in the Tools Palette, select your desired color, then press Ctrl+Delete (Command+Delete on a Mac) to fill the letter or base layer with your chosen color.

Now, do the same for the decorative floral layer to add color to the design of the top layer.

To create some dimension and depth, make sure the top floral layer is selected in the Layers Palette and click on the layer styles button at the bottom left of the Layers Palette. (The layer styles button looks like an f inside of a circle.)
Once you click on that button, the drop-down menu will appear and you will choose “Bevel and Emboss.”

Choose these settings in the layer styles box:

Style: Emboss
Technique: Smooth
Depth: 51%
Direction: Up
Size: 1 px
Angle: 120 degrees
“Use Global Light”: checked
Altitude: 30 degrees
Gloss Contour: default setting
Highlight Mode: “Screen,” with an Opacity of 75%
Shadow Mode: “Multiply,” with an Opacity of 59%

For the highlight and shadow colors, you can just go ahead and choose a slightly deeper blue for the shadow and slightly lighter blue for the highlight to create a subtle embossed effect.

Now, click on the “Pattern Overlay” option on the left-hand side of the layer styles box. Choose these settings:

Blend Mode: “Color Burn”
Opacity: 31%
Pattern: Fibers 1, from the “Grayscale Paper” patterns included with Photoshop
Scale: 101%
“Link with Layer”: checked

Click “OK” and the result is a nice paper texture within the floral pattern to create even more depth.

Now, press Ctrl+E (Command+E on a Mac) to merge all of the layers for a finished alpha.

August Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in August! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line saying “BINGO CARD” and including your message board user name by Sunday, August 3rd in order to play in the first round which will begin Monday, August 4th.

Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call 5 random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words. This in-depth digital scrapbooking class is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to use patterns. Patterns can be overwhelming and challenging to use. Learn some simple rules and guidelines to make them easier. Discuss different types of patterns, and how to effectively combine them. Study real examples, and see how applying the rules can improve your layouts.

Important: This is an Intermediate Level class open to all software program users. Students are, however, required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program for their software prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!

Enrolling in this course without understanding these basic skills may cause you to feel lost and frustrated when you attend the classes. We want you to have a great experience.
