Picnic Basket of Doom
larger view

You know it, you dread it, it's back... with a STAYcation twist! The Picnic Basket of Doom is here!

For those of you new to this game, the object is simple. You must correctly identify the items shown in the picnic basket image. There are 38 items. Some objects may have multiple items, such as a brush on a paper, or a style.

Now don't panic! You don't have to find them all to play the game. (Whew!) But anyone who DOES get them all correct will automatically win a $10 Gift Certificate! No problem. You've got it. This means more than one person can win a $10 gift certificate. (Anyone this motivated deserves a prize!) The winners of these gift certificates can get in on the rest of the game, too!

For all players:

  • If you get 15 or more correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Gift Certificate!
  • If you get 10-15 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $10 Gift Certificate!
  • If you get 5-9 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $5 Gift Certificate!

To enter the game, send your guesses to [email protected]. For each item guessed, you must include BOTH the product name and a link to where you can find it in the Scrap Girls boutique. Your email must be received by Midnight (MT), on Thursday, July 31st. We can not be responsible for lost or unreceived emails. One email per member; Dee will respond to your email to let you know it was received. If you do not receive a reply in 24 hours, please resend.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Life Muses by Ro: Burr In My Shoe

I thought it was a pebble at first. I reached inside of my hot pink clog and brushed it out. Then, after thoroughly wiping off the bottom of my foot, I put the clog back on and continued walking. It only took two or three steps to realize that my foot still hurt.

Something was inside my shoe.

Again, I wiped out the inside of the shoe and the bottom of my foot. I examined my skin carefully to see if something tiny was embedded. Once I was satisfied that everything was well, I put my shoe back on and tried again.

But no, there it was again. Something was inside my shoe.

I tried a third time. Since I was standing on the side of a road while I attempted to clean my shoe and foot, I became concerned that I was dirtying my foot as soon as I cleaned it off. But even as the thought occurred, I brushed it aside because I could clearly see that the inside of my shoe and the bottom of my foot were clean. I put the shoe on again and started walking. Immediately, I winced with pain. Something was inside my shoe... or was it?

This time, when I pulled off my shoe, I thought to flip the shoe over and saw the culprit: a burr with spikes long enough to poke completely through the sole my pink foam clog. I pulled the burr out with my fingers and knew that my struggle to walk without pain was over.

Oh, if it were so easy to pluck life-burrs out as I stumble across them along the way!

Tonight, as I was praying about one of my children – a son who is desperately mentally ill and who is, yet again, hospitalized for his own protection – I thought of the burr in my life. Sometimes, we are asked to bear life-burrs that cannot be plucked out easily – or at all. Sometimes, the prayer cannot be, “Remove this from me because I cannot stand this pain one more moment,” but, “Help me bear the unbearable with dignity... Fill me with thy never-ending peace... Remove all bitterness, resentment and anger that I have been asked to bear this from my soul... Rid me of ill feelings... Send me thy overwhelming love and understanding.”

Some burrs are with us and will be with us during the balance of our lives. They stand over us like an angry schoolmaster, always demanding attention, rapping their stick on our desks when we appear drowsy, and refuse to give us praise for the magnificent efforts we make to continue in their classroom when all we want to do is run away and hide in a safe place. It is easy, when one is dropped into an academic situation such as I am describing, to long for the easiness you believe you observe in other people’s lives.

“She has more wealth,” you say. “I wish to be like her.”

“He has successful children,” you sigh. “I wish they were mine.”

“He has excellent health,” you think. “His life is superior to mine. I would be like him.”

But, if the complete picture of these lives were shown to us, we would soon see that each soul has its own burr to bear. Each soul has its own hill to climb. Each soul has its own challenge, its own struggle and its own schoolmaster standing over its desk, rapping it awake when it becomes drowsy.

This is why, as I sit here writing this night, thinking of my son, I am torn with feelings of longing for relief from the burr that has been a significant cause of chaos in our lives for twenty-eight years and feelings of shame that I long for relief from the burr at all.

It is upon occasions such as this that I am grateful that I am able to turn to the Master Surgeon. He is the only one who can help in these dark moments. It is He who will ultimately pour balm in my burr-wound. It is He who has the singular ability to help me achieve some small measure of peace about a life that will ride turbulent as a hurricane in deep waters throughout all of its days. It is He that I look to, that I hope for, and long for.

And, it is He that I pray sees that somewhere inside of this tired mother’s heart is the girl that held the beautiful baby with the deep brown eyes with such pride. It is that woman who knows that somewhere inside of the troubled soul which I now call my son is a magnificent soul will someday rise whole, healed once and for all by the Master Surgeon himself.

We will all be whole then... me, my husband, my son, and my family... all of us... We will be whole and all of the burrs will be plucked out and removed, once and for all.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Adding Texture with JPG Format ScrapSimple Paper Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a PC.

ScrapSimple Paper Templates make it easy to create digital background papers for your scrapbooking projects, or to enhance existing paper. JPG format templates are perfect for adding all-over texture since they are solid templates with no transparency. Using Blend Modes will allow you to create textural effects easily for both new backgrounds and existing digital scrapbooking papers.

Screenshot: Layer template over solid color

Create a new document and fill with a color, neither too dark nor too bright. For this example, I am using a medium green. Open a JPG format paper template, such as ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiquities 2, and drag it on top of the document. (Remember, holding the Shift key while dragging will align the template in the center.)

Screenshot: Change Blend Mode of template

Change the Blend Mode to “Overlay” and notice how the texture has been added to the background. Try several other Blend Modes such as “Color Burn” and “Lighten.” Each Blend Mode will give a different effect and you can choose either a softly-textured look, such as with “Soft Light” or more of an artistic look, such as with “Hard Light.”

Screenshot: Layer template over finished paper

JPG paper templates will also add texture to existing paper. Use the same technique as above, layering the template over the paper and changing the Blend Mode. This example uses a paper from the Endearing You Collection Biggie and ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Studio 5 and uses the “Difference” Blend Mode.

Whether you are creating paper from scratch or adding interest to existing paper, JPG paper templates can add all-over texture, giving your digital scrapbooking projects unique character and depth.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
