Scrap Girls STAYcation Events! |
Scrap Girls is announcing its vacation plans... STAYCATION! The whole team is going to have a STAYcation this year, and we want you to STAYcation with us. Our Product Designers are having a STAYcation, too, and as a change from slaving away making beautiful digital scrapbooking supplies for you to scrap with, they're hosting chats all week! Trust us, you do NOT want to miss these chats. Our designers get out so rarely, this is a real treat!

Post your layout in the appropriate gallery, and the best layout wins a prize. Winner selected at the end of Scrap Girls' STAYcation week 2008 and will be announced in our newsletter.

You know it, you dread it, it's back... with a STAYcation twist! The Picnic Basket of Doom is here!
For those of you new to this game, the object is simple. You must correctly identify the items shown in the picnic basket image. There are 38 items. Some objects may have multiple items, such as a brush on a paper, or a style.
Now don't panic! You don't have to find them all to play the game. (Whew!) But anyone who DOES get them all correct will automatically win a $10 Gift Certificate! No problem. You've got it. This means more than one person can win a $10 gift certificate. (Anyone this motivated deserves a prize!) The winners of these gift certificates can get in on the rest of the game, too!
For all players:
- If you get 15 or more correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Gift Certificate!
- If you get 10-15 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $10 Gift Certificate!
- If you get 5-9 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $5 Gift Certificate!

One of the challenges of writing a regular column such as this is that a great deal of the time, you feel that nothing particularly interesting or inspiring happens to you. You get up, shower and dress, eat the same breakfast you’ve eaten for weeks, do the same work, talk to the same people, go the same places, watch the same TV shows, and go to bed at the same time each evening.
Nothing has especially inspired you. Nothing has moved you to think differently or act in a unique way. When you look back, you can’t particularly remember what has occurred.
Life feels a waft in sameness... ordinary, blank-minded sameness.
But then, without warning, your mind grasps the idea that your big life is found between the covers of small days. While your life may appear to be connected through major milestones such as births, deaths, marriage, graduation, moves to new cities, and radical changes in employment, those events are simply markers placed along the path so that you might know where you are on the journey.
The journey itself – life – is found in moving through one simple activity at a time.
Each time you stand in a line, make a meal, take out the trash, put clean clothes in your closet, read a book, chat with friends, laugh with a family member, comb your hair, or engage in your favorite hobby, try to remember that you are living your entire life at that very moment. And the very moment you remember that you are living your entire life, you’ll feel inspired.
This is your life. Isn’t it interesting?

Best of the Message Board |
Question: I keep seeing a BEAUTIFUL layout by Ariadna Wiczling where she is holding her baby while lying on her back in the middle of a grassy field. The colors are absolutely amazing! Does anyone know how she created this effect or how I can contact her directly and ask her? Thanks!
Answer 1: I'm fairly certain that she used a stock photo on this one, but check out the PS/PSE Tools section in the boutique. There are a lot of actions and styles to improve your photos!
Answer 2: The picture seems to have been taken in perfect light by a professional photographer. Playing with the levels under adjustments could already be great on your picture. I am sure she made a cutout and added the sky from Thao's Naturescape Collection. She might have added a slight outer glow to the cutout photograph. I think the layout is awesome. Sometimes, we can create such cool effects by combining paper and photos or even two different photos. Hope this helps. Ariadna is surely going to make an appearance here, but you can certainly PM her.
Answer 3: It's definitely a stock photo. I've used it at work before, but as was mentioned, there are some amazing tools in the boutique that help make photos pop! There are many different styles to choose from, too! The volume of layouts our designers do is amazing and I, for one, couldn't imagine having personal photos for each one... that would be a lot of photography time! We want them to design! Just kidding - we want you to spend time with your families, too - after you design for us.
Answer 4: I'm sorry that I didn't see the question about my layout "Just the Two of Us" the other day. The photograph I used for this layout was taken by a Polish photographer, Andrzej Burak, and it's truly a masterpiece. I cut the mother and baby out and blended the photo into Thao's Naturescape background paper. I didn't tweak the colors for this one.
To make the colors pop, you may use some of the actions available in the boutique. You may also try to adjust the Levels or Hue/Saturation. The other great way to do that is duplicating your photo layer and changing the Blend Mode of the upper one to “Soft Light” or even “Overlay.” If the effect isn't natural, lower the opacity of the upper layer. This gives a pop right away! Hope this helps. Thank you for your kind words about the layout!
Question: I am trying to cut my brother out of one picture and paste him on another. It's a joke that I'm playing on him. I tried the Lasso Tool, but it goes all over and cuts the wrong parts off! I did the best I could and then mostly used the Eraser, but I know that there is an easier way. Thanks.
Answer 1: What program are you using? I use PSE6 and there is a function under File> Photomerge> Face that walks you through it step by step.
Answer 2: That sounds like a neat feature in PSE6. There is Photomerge, but not Photomerge> Face. I don't know of any other away other than selecting it with the Lasso Tool. Check to see which Lasso Tool you have selected. It might be that you have the Magnetic Lasso and that might be why you are getting it going all over. You should use just the plain Lasso Tool.
Response 1: Yes, I use PSE6 and I will look for that feature. I think it’s the regular Lasso (or at least it looks like it), but I will try others. Thanks.
Answer 3: In PSE5, there are three Lasso Tools under one button. There is Lasso, Magnetic Lasso and Polygonal. I guess it's the Polygonal that I use most.
Response 2: Just peeking in and saw your comment about the Polygonal Tool. I've never used it before but I tried it today and it's amazing! Thanks for your comments!
Answer 4: I use the Magic Extractor. You'll find it under “Image.” It tells you what you need to do; just follow the instructions. Finally, to clean up the edges, I use the Magnetic Lasso Tool and played with the Edge Contrast option and selected the Anti-aliased. If you do a search in HELP, it will bring up some great info.
Answer 5: The Magic Extractor is what works best for me, too. I never get the Lasso Tool to work exactly the way I want it to for people.
Question: I was looking at brackets in the boutique. Two products caught my eye: ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Brackets 2101 Biggie and ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Brackets Super Biggie. The shape and look of the finished products look so similar. What is the difference between a brush and a shape? Is it mainly about preference as to which tool you like to use, or are they used for different applications?
Answer: Shapes are added to your Custom Shapes folder in PSE or PSCS. You can then click on the Custom Shape Tool and choose which one you want to use and drag out the size you want on a layer. If you have PSP, there are PNG files, which you can use to create brushes from them.
The Layer Your Own Brush set gives you several different brushes that you can combine for different looks. You can "stamp" the plain bracket by itself or add the other brushes to it. |

July Board Game: Layout Reveal
Whether you travel on vacation or entertain right in your own backyard, summertime means fun! This month, we'll be having some fun as we play Layout Reveal!
Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout that is partially covered in a message board thread. A new section of the layout will be revealed each day until someone correctly guesses which layout it is. Once a layout is correctly identified, a new layout will be featured starting the following day.
Layouts will be found in the boutique on product details pages.
If you are the first to guess one of the layouts correctly, you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique!
