To give emphasis to some words in the journaling telling an important part of the story, I placed the black pointer embellishment from Melanie Johnson’s Planet Earth Collection below the text.

It is always a challenge to create realistic drop shadows for transparent objects like these beautiful glass photo corners in Shalae’s Renew Collection Biggie. Luckily for us, Theresa Kavouras has done most of the hard work by creating ScrapSimple Action: Shadowing Transparent Objects 5301. All you have to do is select one of three shadow styles and follow Theresa’s easy instructions. I think it looks great!

Journaling: I just love this picture of my granddad. If you look really close you can see him posing like a scarecrow in the middle of his corn field. This was so indicative of his sense of humor. He was wearing his signature blue chambray shirt with bibbed overalls. Granddad loved all things of nature, and had a natural green thumb. He would come home after a long day working his fields and lovingly care for his prized roses. Granddad passed on his love for nature to me. While I don't have much luck with roses I think he would be proud of my lilies!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to take the word “Peonia” and give it a cool grunged and faded look. First, I created a text box and typed the word “Peonia” out. Then, I changed the Blend Mode to “Hard Light” and lowered the Opacity of my layer to 60%. I then took my Eraser Tool and loaded one of Thao’s Brush Set: Beautiful Distress and started to erase away from my text until I got just the result I was looking for.

I needed to attach my alpha charms to the ribbon; I hate things floating on my layouts! So I used the threads from Cheryl Barber's Sew Simple Buttons, Thread, Hooks & Eyes Embellishment Mini. You know it, you dread it, it's back... with a STAYcation twist! The Picnic Basket of Doom is here!

For those of you new to this game, the object is simple. You must correctly identify the items shown in the picnic basket image. There are 38 items. Some objects may have multiple items, such as a brush on a paper, or a style.

Now don't panic! You don't have to find them all to play the game. (Whew!) But anyone who DOES get them all correct will automatically win a $10 Gift Certificate! No problem. You've got it. This means more than one person can win a $10 gift certificate. (Anyone this motivated deserves a prize!) The winners of these gift certificates can get in on the rest of the game, too!

  • If you get 15 or more correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Gift Certificate!
  • If you get 10-15 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $10 Gift Certificate!
  • If you get 5-9 correct answers, you will be entered into a drawing for a $5 Gift Certificate!

To enter the game, send your guesses to [email protected]. For each item guessed, you must include BOTH the product name and a link to where you can find it in the Scrap Girls boutique. Your email must be received by Midnight (MT), on Thursday, July 31st. We can not be responsible for lost or unreceived emails. One email per member; Dee will respond to your email to let you know it was received. If you do not receive a reply in 24 hours, please resend.

A Designers Life: Angie Briggs

Set Up On Level Ground

“Set up on level ground.” Who would have thought that those five little words would come back to haunt us over and over?

Let me back up a little bit to the end of last summer. We had decided that we would get a large, four foot deep, inflatable pool for the boys. They were at the stage where they had outgrown a regular kiddy pool and slip and slides only entertained them for so long. The first thing we did when it got warm was purchase their pool.

We got it home, and since my husband had declared setting up the pool “his job,” I let him be. I sat there and watched as he looked over the papers that came with the pool, got the liner spread out, put the pool on top of it and got the ring around the top blown up. I then heard the water turn on.... Now, this should be a very simple thing. As long as the pool is set on level ground, you simply fill it up with water and the pool will set itself up.

That’s when our first problem became apparent. After a bit, he noticed that the water was about two inches deeper on one end than the other. Being that this was our first time setting up a pool, my husband decided to keep filling it up. I guess he had the thought that it was just an inch or so... no big deal.

As the first couple of hours went by, I kept asking, “Are you sure this is going to work?” Each time, I got the same response, “It will be fine.” Shortly after, it became apparent that we were going to have a problem, but my husband was not going to admit defeat just yet, so we kept filling it. I sat silently on the deck watching as the boys kept asking, “How much longer?”

I would say it was about six hours into it before my husband realized it just wasn’t going to fill correctly. At this point, we had one side almost full to the top and the other side had about two feet left to fill. Since the pool was not on level ground, the water basically kept running down hill. My husband turned off the water and started draining the pool. Of course, this sends the boys into a frenzy and all I can hear outside is, “I want to swim!” and “When will it be ready?” and “Why are we taking out the water?” In between their questions there are words flying around that I have not heard in a long time.

The next morning is very touchy in our house. Do I ask him about the pool? Should I offer help? Should I pretend that this huge blue thing that’s sitting in our backyard doesn’t even exist? The only thing he says when he sits down is, “I guess I shouldn’t take ‘set on level ground’ lightly.”

For the next couple of days, our nightmare continues. My husband decides to get some dirt to try and level the ground. I keep telling him that I think sand will work better, but he wants dirt. We go get the dirt and try to level it out some. It is still not working right, but decide to work on it again the next day. For the next three days it rains, so all of the dirt we got, plus what we had already put down, turns to mud. UGH! Finally, it all dries out enough to work on again and we have dirt clumps, which are definitely not pool-friendly.

The pool sat for about a week after that. I think we were both so tired of it we had hoped that one day we would wake up and the blue, muddy, blob in our backyard would be gone.

By the weekend, we were ready to tackle it again... it was going to get done that day. We got up early on a Saturday, called in my dad for help and began leveling the ground, this time with sand. After about three hours of working on it, the true test came... time to start filling the pool. As it started to rise, it looked like it might actually work this time. Once there were a few inches of water in the bottom, we did have to readjust it a bit in spots. Once we got that done, we sat back and watched as the pool filled. Yeah! This time it was filling properly and, by the end of the day, we had a filled pool in the backyard and everyone was happy again.

Even with all of the trouble that the pool has caused, it was a great learning experience and the boys love it. They are out there daily playing and splashing in the water. Whenever my husband is asked about the pool, the first thing he says is, “When they say, 'set on level ground,' they mean, 'set on level ground'.”

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
