Life Muses by Ro: 10 Top Questions Answered |
Note from Ro: This is a reprint of an article I wrote for a U.K. magazine several years ago. Because it addresses commonly asked questions about digital scrapbooking, I thought our new readers may enjoy it.

Top 10 Questions and Answers about Digital Scrapbooking
Question: What software should I use when digitally scrapbooking?
Answer: Digital scrapbookers use graphic editing software to create their layouts. The most commonly used software packages include:
Question: How do I learn how to use the software to create my layouts?
Answer: Many of the large digital scrapbooking websites have online tutorials that will help you along. Other options include my own Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed movie tutorial training programs, which allow you to watch me scrapbook in the software and hear me talking about what you are learning about in that film. These types of resources will allow you to begin scrapbooking immediately and your learning experience will be more enjoyable than if you try to go it alone.
Question: How do I print out my layouts?
Answer: A nice way to do this is to print them out on your own photo printer using photo paper. While the standard size for creating digital scrapbooking layouts is 12”x12”, many digital scrapbookers reduce the file size to 8”x8” prior to printing, as this size will fit on regular-sized photo paper, can be printed out on a regular-size printer, and fits into readily available 8x8 albums.
Other options for printing include sending your files to online photo processing companies or taking the files to your neighborhood photo processing store.
If you would rather print out or create your layouts at a different page size, you can do that easily as a digital scrapbooker. In fact, digital scrapbookers have recently discovered how fun it is to create 4”x6” layouts. They are fast, easy and economical – particularly since this size allows you to take advantage of discount photo printing offers and inexpensive albums available at dollar stores.
Question: While I am interested in digital scrapbooking, I would still like to continue making paper layouts. Any advice for me?
Answer: Actually, many digital scrapbookers enjoy using their digital supplies as printables so that they can make paper layouts, cards and altered projects. Digital supplies print out very nicely on your own printer.
Question: What is the best way of backing up my digital scrapbooking layouts, supplies and pictures?
Answer: First of all, let me say that you should not depend upon your computer hard drive to store them for you. Hard drives fail routinely and you will be very dismayed if you lose all of your precious photos because you haven’t had a back-up plan. Most serious digital scrapbookers do four things:
- They have an external hard drive where they store all of their photos, their layouts and their scrapbooking supplies. Because you can now buy very large external hard drives for very little money, it is a nice way to keep your main hard drive from slowing down because it has become too full with graphic files that take a lot of storage space.
- They burn multiple copies of backup DVDs of their photos, layouts and scrapbooking supplies. It has recently been discovered that CDs are not as reliable as previously thought and so the recommendation has been made by experts that DVDs be used instead. Some people store these DVDs in a small fire-proof safe. Anyone who is using a digital camera, regardless of whether or not they choose to digitally scrapbook, should take similar precautions with their photos, as it would be a tragedy to lose them.
- They print out their layouts and store them in albums. They also print out any photos that they do not wish to scrapbook and store them in albums.
- They back up their computers with an online storage company, such as Carbonite. Off-site storage allows you to ensure that your files are not lost should you face a large disaster such as a fire or flood.
Question: I am concerned about the archival quality of digital scrapbooking layouts. Is it safe?
Answer: Yes, it is safe. In fact, some authorities have reported that today’s ink jet prints lasts longer than traditional photo lab methods. Printing out a journaling block or printing out a photo or even an entire layout is just the same thing. Some printer manufacturers claim that their prints will last at least 100 years. And, of course, digital scrapbook layouts can be printed by any photo lab anywhere which makes them exactly the same as the photos on paper layouts – minus the worry about the paper supplies.
Question: I am a Mac user and I am concerned that the digital scrapbooking supplies I see won’t work for me.
Answer: The good news is that the file types (.jpgs and .pngs) used for digital scrapbooking work equally well for both Mac and PC users. There are no file type conflicts to worry about with this particular brand of fun. And, Adobe has made its wonderful software – Photoshop and Photoshop Elements – available for both the Mac and PC platforms, so there is no reason for anyone to miss out!
Question: How do I find digital scrapbooking information and supplies?
Answer: There is a wealth of information and beautiful supplies available to you on the Internet. Because digital scrapbooking supplies are largely delivered via downloads, you may purchase them, download them, and enjoy them immediately. If your particular Internet connection is too slow to allow for downloading the files, you can choose to use Scrap Girls CD burning services and we will ship them to you. Of course, Scrap Girls has everything you need. Digital scrapbooking is what we do and we work hard to try to provide our consumers with everything they need to have a great experience.
Question: I have purchased some digital scrapbooking supplies and have used them on a layout. Can I use them again? Is this allowed?
Answer: Yes, this is allowed – as long as you are using them for your own personal scrapbooking and are not sharing your supplies with your family or friends, as to do so would break the terms of the licensing agreement that accompanies your purchase. But, one of the great things about digital scrapbooking is that you can reuse your supplies repeatedly. They never run out or get “used up” because they are image files!
Question: What would you consider to be the chief benefits of digital scrapbooking?
Answer: The speed of creating the layouts and the ability to edit your layouts. I have found digital scrapbooking to not only be creatively satisfying, quick and inexpensive, but, more importantly to me, I have found that I can edit a layout repeatedly until I am completely satisfied with the result. If I open a completed layout a week later and discover that I don’t like it, I am not worried at all. I just fix the part that bothers me. I can’t do that with paper layouts. If I make serious mistakes with them, I either have to live with my mistakes or throw them away.
This ability to edit my layouts was actually the main reason that I switched to digital scrapbooking after 40 years as a paper scrapbooker. I love the freedom I feel as the worry I constantly felt about ruining things while making paper layouts has been completely removed from my scrapbooking experience.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Using File> Place |
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 with Windows Vista.
Using File> Place is a very easy option in Photoshop Elements that I have found to have two great functions.

The first is renaming the layers in your layout. In the past, I would rename the layers with the kit name, so I would remember what was used. By using the “Place” feature, your layer will automatically be renamed. With your new document open, go to File> Place.
Search your computer to find the location where you keep your digital scrapbooking supplies and select the first item. When you do this, you will see that the item is placed on your new document, and in the Layers Palette, your layer name is changed to the file name.

For each item you place in this fashion, you’ll see that the name of the layer changes.

Once you have completed your layout, you will find that all of your layers have been named with the items you’ve used and you do not have to remember what collection each item came from.
The second useful function that I have come across is in Photoshop Elements 5.0. If you are working in Elements 5.0, you might be aware that there is sometimes a “glitch” in the program that will not allow you to Shift+Drag items over to a new document and have them fall into place. This technique can be very useful if you are working with our ScrapSimple Layout Templates, as some of our past templates do not include a layered PSD file. In Elements 5.0 with this glitch, instead of the items landing in the correct spot, they will land in the middle of the document. If you use this File> Place function, you will find that the templates are much easier to put together, as everything will land where it should.

If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:
- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.
Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
